- Training Camp 2006 -

Islanders Make Final Cuts

October 2, 2006: The Islanders cut their roster down to the league maximum 23 players today sending RW Peter Ferraro, RW Brandon Cullen and D Rick Berry to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL. Even though this seems like a final cut, coach Ted Nolan still hasn't decided if he is going to take 23 or 22 players on the Islanders opening West Coast trip. Right now the Islanders have eight defensemen in camp which includes the injured Joel Bouchard and Bruno Gervais. A decision should be made within the next day or so.

Isles Finish Preseason 3-2

September 30, 2006: Bridgeport, CT (Sports Network) - Alexei Yashin had a goal and an assist as the New York Islanders shut out the New Jersey Devils, 3-0, in preseason action. Trent Hunter added a shorthanded goal for the Islanders, while Rick DiPietro and Mike Dunham combined to stop all 29 New Jersey shots.

Miroslav Satan scored the other Islander goal, his second of the preseason.

Notes: Bruno Gervais recorded 3 assists in 5 games during the preseason. He logged a ton of ice time as new head coach Ted Nolan got a real good look at him. It's really hard to imagine the Islanders sending him down now. But there still is a numbers problem on the Islanders blue line. Rick Berry will be sent to Bridgeport, as will most likely Joel Bouchard who has missed the preseason with a hamstring injury. That leaves either Sean Hill, Radek Martinek or Bruno Gervais as the extra seventh defenseman. Gervais is too young to not be playing regularly. Would Nolan consider a three man rotation to start the season?

Islanders Defeat Rangers Again

September 29, 2006: Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Alexei Yashin scored in the third period to help the New York Islanders defeat the Rangers, 2-1, in a preseason contest at Nassau Coliseum.

Yashin got to a rebound of defenseman Bruno Gervais' shot and knocked it past goalie Stephen Valiquette from in close with 6:51 remaining to snap a 1-1 tie.

Mirolslav Satan gave the Islanders their first lead - with an assist from Yashin -- scoring 12 seconds into a two-man advantage in the middle period. Rick DiPietro came up with 14 saves in the win.

Brandon Dubinsky had the lone goal for the Rangers, and Stephen Valiquette made 27 stops.

Notes: Between the first and second period, the Islanders announced they have signed backup goaltender Mike Dunham to a one year contract.

Sound Tigers go 3-0

Islanders Cut Two More; Down to 26

September 27, 2006: The Islanders re-assigned C Jeremy Colliton and RW Blake Comeau to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers this morning, leaving the team with 26 players still remaining in camp. The most surprising player still remaining is camp invitee RW Brandon Cullen (pictured right). Below is a reprint of Cullen's bio. With 9 defensemen still in camp, it's most likely that two of the three remaining cuts will come from that position. Rick Berry is most likely destined for Bridgeport, leaving a battle for the 7th position between Martinek, Gervais & Bouchard.

Up front, there will probably only be one more cut. Cullen is making a case to make the team and is most likely battling against Richard Park and Peter Ferraro for the final spot (the Islanders will probably carry two extra forwards to start the season).

In other news, some rumblings have been going around that the Islanders did not only cut Robert Nilsson by demoting him to Bridgeport, but they also do not feel they are getting their $942,400 worth, which is his NHL salary. Since he makes less in the AHL the Islanders are looking to possibly cut some costs.

RW Brandon Cullen, 6', 212 lbs....25 years old from St. Catharines, Ont...spent 4 years in the OHL between Oshawa & Erie from 1998-02....has spent 4 years with the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers from 2002-06....had a career high 14 goals and 39 points in 51 games played with Charlotte in 2005-06....also played 25 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL in 2003-04....attended Hartford's training camp in 2005....not afraid to drop the gloves and scrap....racked up 202 PIM's with Charlotte in 58 games played during the 2002-03 season....if he does not make an impression, at least for Bridgeport, Cullen is slated to return to Charlotte for a fifth straight season.

Islanders Make Cuts

September 26, 2006: The Islanders have cut 28 players from their training camp roster and returned them to either the Bridgeport Sound Tigers training camp, or their various junior clubs. Among the most notable cut was RW Robert Nilsson, who did not have a very good camp in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Nilsson failed to impress new head coach Ted Nolan and reportedly played in camp like he already had a position sewed up on the team.

Nolan prides his teams on hard work and the talented Nilsson did not convince that he was a hard worker. Originally slated for possible first line duty this year, Nilsson will return to Bridgeport it seems to work his way back onto the Islanders. Also cut was Petteri Nokelainen. With Sean Bergenheim not in camp this year, none of the Islanders last 5 first round picks will likely be in the opening night lineup.

Ryan O'Marra, Dustin Kohn, Robin Figren and Tomas Marcinko have been returned to junior, as officially announced by their respective junior clubs. Their returns haven't been officially announced but defensemen Nicholas Tuzzolino and Andrew MacDonald are listed on their respective teams' rosters in Sudbury and Moncton.

Still remaining with the Islanders are 28 players. The roster has to be paired down to 23 so at least 6 more cuts will be made before the season begins. One player who has surprising made an impression on coach Nolan is RW Brandon Cullen. Having spent the last 4 seasons in the ECHL, Cullen may not be returning for a fifth. He has good size and likes to play the gritty game. He impressed so much that he was inserted into the Islanders lineup in their preseason match against the Rangers.

The competition on defense is turning out to be a fierce one this year. Last night in their preseason game against the Rangers, the Islanders dressed Sean Hill, Tom Poti, Brendan Witt, Alexei Zhitnik, Bruno Gervais and Chris Campoli as their 6 defensemen. Gervais has recorded 2 assists so far in the preseason and is jumping up into the play. He is showing that he may be ready for fulltime work in the NHL. He could end up gaining a spot over Joel Bouchard and surprisingly Radek Martinek could be on the fence as well.

Hopefully the Islanders will sign D Joe Grimaldi and at least send him to Bridgeport. He impressed in camp, as did Andrew MacDonald who could be molded into a good offensive defenseman down the line for the Islanders.

Islanders Rally in third against Rangers

September 25, 2006: NEW YORK -- Jason Blake scored two of the New York Islanders' four third-period goals, rallying them past the New York Rangers 5-2 Monday night in the first preseason matchup between the local rivals.

Blake fired a slap shot from above the right circle during a power play, snapping a 2-2 tie forged just moments earlier on the gritty forward's first goal of the exhibition season for the Islanders (1-2).

The lead grew to 4-2 just 3:01 later when Chris Simon turned his skate toward the open right side of the net and steered in a shot by Tom Poti. The goal was allowed since there was no kicking motion.

Jarkko Immonen had a goal and set up one for Ivan Baranka for the Rangers (3-1).

Viktor Kozlov had a power-play goal in the second period and Arron Asham added one in the third for the Islanders, who showed off their 'A' lineup for the first time in the preseason.

All the Islanders' goals were scored against Stephen Valiquette, who played the entire game. Valiquette started in place of No. 1 netminder Henrik Lundqvist -- who was resting -- and Kevin Weekes, out with a groin strain.

Valiquette looked sharp until the third-period blitz when the Islanders turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead during a span of 7:45.

The teams traded goals on the same power play in the second period to bust up a scoreless tie.

With Brendan Shanahan serving a tripping penalty, Rangers teammate Baranka scored his first of the preseason at 2:08.

The Islanders needed only 49 seconds to tie it. Bruno Gervais' shot near the left post deflected into the right circle to Kozlov, who one-timed a drive from the bottom edge past Valiquette.

The Rangers regained the lead with 33.1 seconds left in the middle period when Immonen deftly guided Marek Malik's hard shot from inside the blue line between his own legs as his back was turned to the goal.

Former Rangers goalie Mike Dunham made 16 saves on 17 shots after replacing top goalie Rick DiPietro, with 9:12 left in the second period. DiPietro stopped 14 of 15 shots.

Islanders defenseman Poti had two assists despite hearing constant boos from Madison Square Garden fans, who didn't like him when he played for the Rangers.

Bruins go two-for-two in straight nights against Islanders

September 23, 2006: HALIFAX, Nova Scotia -- Tyler Redenbach beat Mike Dunham on Boston's first shot of the game and the Bruins went on to beat the New York Islanders for the second straight night, winning 3-2 in exhibition play Saturday night.

Glen Murray and Jonathan Sigalet also scored for the Bruins (4-1-0), coming off a 5-1 victory over the Islanders on Friday night in Moncton, New Brunswick. Andy Hilbert and Tom Poti scored for New York (0-2-0).

Redenbach surprised goalie Mike Dunham with a quick shot from the side of the net 2:01 into the game. Dunham, in the Islanders' camp on a tryout, got a piece of the puck, but it deflected off his pads and through his legs.

Murray, from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, made it 2-0 with 5:27 left in the first period, scoring off a feed from Marc Savard. Sigalet made it 3-0 with 3:56 to go in the period when he scored during a Boston power play.

Dunham stopped 10 of 13 shots before being replace by Rick DiPietro halfway through the second period. Hannu Toivonen went the distance for the Bruins, stopping 23 shots.

Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara (bruised foot) sat out his second straight game.

Coach Ted Nolan: "The exhibition series is about making corrections and getting better," said Ted Nolan. "We haven't gotten into systems or fine detail yet, but one thing you don't need to practice is commitment and work. We worked a little bit tonight and it was a lot better than last night."

Coach Ted Nolan stated he wasn't upset with the 5-1 loss to Boston Friday night. He said "exhibition is for evaluation."

The Islanders rookies defeated Acadia University this afternoon 5-4. At one point the Islanders trailed the game 4-1. Acadia received goals from Blair Jarrett, Tyler Reid, Pierre Mitsou and David Victor. Unfortunately, no report on who scored for the Isles.

September 22, 2006 Preseason: Bruins 5, Islanders 1

Islanders start action with bad loss to Bruins

MONCTON, New Brunswick -- Rick DiPietro and Ted Nolan got off to rough starts Friday night in the New York Islanders' first exhibition game of the season.

DiPietro allowed three goals on 14 shots in 33 minutes in his first game since signing a $67.5 million, 15-year contract, while Nolan was behind the bench in the NHL for the first time in nine years as the Islanders fell 5-1 to the Boston Bruins.

Marc Savard, Nate Thompson, Brad Stuart, Pascal Pelletier and Martins Karsums scored for the Bruins, 3-1 in preseason play.

DiPietro, who turned 25 earlier this week, also took six minutes in penalties, including one minor for playing the puck in the forbidden zone in the corner and also an unsportsmanlike conduct call for arguing.

Mike Dunham, in camp on a tryout, played the final 27 minutes in goal for New York.

Tim Thomas made 30 saves for the Bruins, allowing only Shawn Bates' goal.

Camp Update - Sept. 22, 2006

Andrew MacDonald has been a late addition to the Islanders "A" group headin to Moncton to play the Bruins tonight. Most likely coach Ted Nolan may have felt MacDonald shouldn't be left out of playing in Moncton, where he played last season in the QMJHL. Nolan was the coach of that team that went all the way to the Memorial Cup Finals, only to lose to the Quebec Remparts. In Nolan's honor, Moncton has named today "Ted Nolan Day."

There hasn't been much to report about the Islanders "B" squad's game Thursday night against the St. Francis Xavier team. From what I've heard word of mouth, the Islanders lost the game 4-2. The "B" team will next play Acadia on Saturday afternoon. The Islanders official website announced that there could be a roster move coming.

The announced lineup for tonight:

Goaltenders
1   Mike Dunham
39 Rick DiPietro

Defensemen
6  Sean Hill - 8   Bruno Gervais
77 Alexei Zhitnik - 47 Andrew MacDonald
3  Tom Poti - 14 Chris Campoli

Forwards
11 Andy Hilbert - 16 Mike York - 81 Miroslav Satan
55 Jason Blake - 17 Shawn Bates - 45 Arron Asham
15 Jeff Tambellini - 10 Richard Park - 57 Blake Comeau
7 Trent Hunter - 51 Frans Nielsen - 58 Masi Marjamaki

Camp Update - Sept. 21, 2006

With the Islanders preparing for their first preseason game Friday night in Moncton against the Boston Bruins, coach Ted Nolan commented on the decisions he made as a few young players are taking the trip: "The young guys we brought up to the exhibition games (like Frans Nielsen, Masi Marjamaki and Blake Comeau) showed us that they wanted to fight for jobs and weren't just expecting jobs. These three young kids earned a spot. Add (Jeff) Tambellini to that as well. We want an environment where people are earning their jobs, especially young people. The quicker we get the message out to those guys the better off the organization will be."

Those who were not named to the exhibition group will remain behind to take on St. Francis Xavier, a Canadian University team formerly coached by assistant coach Danny Flynn, at 6:30pm tonight.

The Islanders have announced the following as their lineup for the game Friday vs. Boston:

Goaltenders
1   Mike Dunham
39 Rick DiPietro

Defensemen
2   Rick Berry
3   Tom Poti
6   Sean Hill
8   Bruno Gervais
14 Chris Campoli

16 Mike York
17 Shawn Bates

Camp Update - Sept. 20, 2006

At the start of the Day, Ted Nolan hinted that Rick DiPietro and Mike Dunham would be the two goaltenders going to Moncton and Halifax over the weekend to take on the Boston Bruins in their first two preseason matches. Obviously, that leaves Wade Dubielewicz, Mike Mole and Chris Madden behind in Yarmouth to play in the two games against St. Francis Xavier and Acadia. Mole has been a surprise of camp and could be making a bid to even surpass Dubielewicz on the depth chart.

Over the last few days of camp, it seemed like a different prospect came to the forefront. A couple days ago it was Franz Nielsen potting a couple of goals. Yesterday it was Steve Regier tallying twice. Today the spotlight was on Sergei Ogorodnikov as he had his best showing of camp.

The first scrimmage between Team Tonelli and Team Nystrom ended in regulation at 1-1. Brandon Cullen scored for Team Tonelli, while Jason Blake scored Team Nystrom's lone tally. In the shootout, the defense scored twice for Team Tonelli thanks to Radek Martinek and Joel Bouchard. But Viktor Kozlov and Trent Hunter kept it tied for Team Nystrom. That was when Ogorodnikov won the game for Team Tonelli when he deked a backhander into the net. The winner put Team Tonelli into the final matchup against Team Henning for "the Lobster Cup."

In the final game, Team Tonelli carried over their momentum as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to two goals by Arron Asham. Ogorodnikov assisted on the second goal when Asham banged home a rebound past Rick DiPietro. Team Henning cut the lead in half when Andy Hilbert put one by Wade Dubielewicz, who played the entire game since Chris Madden was absent from camp today.

Team Tonelli led the game 2-1 at the end of regulation. Team Henning had 6 penalty shot attempts coming to them while Team Tonelli held four. Team Henning needed Mike Mole to come up big in the penalty shot session and he did, stopping all four Team Tonelli shooters. Jeff Tambellini continued his stellar camp by tying the game 2-2 after he scored on Dubielewicz. The goal set up sudden death shootout.

Sergei Ogorodnikov was the hero once again as he faked to his forehand, backhand, and then forehand again before depositing the puck by Mole. Dubielewicz stoned Hilbert on his attempt and Team Tonelli would win the Lobster Cup.

Rosters Announced

The Islanders this evening announced the roster of players going to Moncton and Halifax this weekend and their were some very surprising omissions, most notable Robert Nilsson who may be receiving a wakeup call. Players marked in bold on both sides are surprises to be in their current groups. Obviously nothing is set in stone as of yet. A couple of players going to Moncton are still on the bubble and vying for jobs, namely Andy Hilbert and Richard Park.

Camp Update - Sept. 19, 2006

Not much to report today. But lets highlight some of the players who have been most impressive thus far in camp. Among the veterans, Jason Blake and Shawn Bates have gotten the most praise from the coaching staff, along with recently signed Viktor Kozlov.

As far as the young players, prospects and invitee the most notable name thus far has been Jeff Tambellini. It will be interesting if he can perform the same in the preseason games as good as he has thus far in the scrimmages. Reportedly, their may be only one or two forwards spots available to the young guys and the coaching staff is looking for some competition from Tambellini and Robert Nilsson. The flashy Nilsson has just been ok so far and coach Nolan has stated that he wants to see more. Nilsson is not going to make the team by just floating and thinking he has a position all sewn up.

As for the invitees, defenseman Joe Grimaldi is opening some eyes with his agitating play. In goal, Danny Flynn's protégé, Mike Mole, may be proving he can play at least at the AHL level for Bridgeport. Last season he played for Phoenix in the ECHL.

Some of the other young prospects like Franz Nielsen, Tomas Marcinko, Blake Comeau, and Jason Pitton have also impressed.

As far as those who have not impressed, coach Nolan went on record that he is not enamored so far with the play of potential backup goaltender Mike Dunham, who is not yet under contract. Right now he is competing against Wade Dubielewicz to be the other "15" goaltender on the roster. 15 games that is which is the number this years backup will most likely see in net behind DiPietro barring any injuries.

Camp Update - Sept. 18, 2006

Jeff Tambellini is making a statement thus far to make the 2006-07 Islanders. In today's action, he recorded a goal and an assist to help Team Arbour win 5-4 over Team Torrey in another Blue-White scrimmage. Also standing out for Team Arbour was Shawn Bates who tallied two goals, one shorthanded, and added an assist in the victory. Joe Grimaldi continues to make a name for himself in this camp as he scuffled once again with defenseman Sean Hill. The veteran Hill got a punch in, but Grimaldi was the only one assessed a penalty. Team Arbour led the game 2-1 on goals by Tambellini and Mike York. Allan Rourke recorded the goal for Team Torrey. Tambellini and Bates made things tough for Team Torrey goaltender Wade Dubielewicz as they combined to make it 4-1, with the fourth goal from Bates on a shorthanded back hander.

At that point, Grimaldi would get into his third fight of training camp. So far he has taken on Jason Blake and Chris Simon. Today he went at it with Arron Asham. Team Torrey stepped it up thanks to some young guys. Franz Nielsen fed Steve Regier with a pass to make it 4-2. Regier would then score again with an assist from Tomas Marcinko to make it 4-3. But Team Arbour would get back ahead by two when Jason Pitton wrapped the puck into the net behind Mike Dunham, who replaced Dubielewicz. Tom Poti later jumped into the play for Team Torrey to make it 5-4 with an assist from Chris Ferraro.

In the shootout, Team Arbour came away with another win, 2-1, thanks to a very flashy deke from Franz Nielsen and another goal from invitee Jamie Johnson.

After the game, Bryan Trottier remarked that he was impresses with the intensity of the veterans in camp, but would like to see more from the young guys looking to make the team. Two players he singled out as impressive were Tambellini and Bates.

Rick DiPietro turned 25 today. He'll see 14 more birthday's most likely as a New York Islander.

The Islanders rookies will be playing a pair of exhibition games the end of this week against two Canadian Universities. One will be St. F.X., the team assistant coach Danny Flynn coached for 10 years. The Islanders first preseason game will be Friday in Moncton against Boston. A rematch against the Bruins will be in Halifax Saturday night. Those players who don't see action in Friday and Saturday's game will most likely play in the rookie games against the two Canadian University teams. Those also will most likely include some of the players who will be the first cuts. Coach Ted Nolan remarked that he won't make any decisions on first cuts until the Islanders return to New York Sunday.

Nolan has been most impressed with Tambellini so far in camp and had this to say about the youngster: "Jeff came into camp as one of the most top conditioned guys. He obviously paid a lot of attention to details this summer. And he's played the last couple of days pretty well, so he's doing well for himself. We'll see how the exhibition games go and take it from there."

Camp Update - Sept. 17, 2006

Islanders assistant GM Ryan Jankowski remarked on the first three days of camp by stating how impressed he was with Jeff Tambellini and Viktor Kozlov.

Scrimmage:

Team Henning defeated Team Nystrom 5-4. The Winning team received goal from Tambellini, Long Islander Jason Guerriero, Petteri Nokelainen, and Robin Figren, who scored his third goal of camp. Chris Simon and camp invitee Bryan Rodney drew Team Nystrom to within 4-2, but Steve Regier put Team Henning up 5-2 going into the shootout. Team Nystrom had four shooters up against one for Team Henning, as shots were awarded instead of penalties. Team Nystrom could only draw to within one after goals by Trent Hunter and Kozlov. Team Henning won thanks to a couple of huge saves in the shootout by Mike Mole. He stoned Franz Nielsen and Mike York on shots to preserve the win.

In a second scrimmage, Team Nystrom bounced back for a 4-2 win over Team Tonelli. Franz Nielsen would score on a breakaway, and then add another in the first half of the game to give Team Nystrom a 2-0 lead. Joe Grimaldi got into his second fight of camp, this time stepping up in toughness to take on Chris Simon. Team Tonelli cut the lead in half when Peter Ferraro put the puck by goaltender Billy Thompson. But Team Nystrom would regain their two goal lead and make it 3-1 on a blast by Jeremy Colliton. It was then that the THIRD fight of camp and second of the day took place. No, it didn't involve Grimaldi this time. Brendan Witt went toe to toe with invitee Brandon Cullen, who likes the rough stuff. Cullen reportedly got the edge on Witt and took him down to the ice. In the shootout, Alexei Yashin drew Team Tonelli to within one, but Jason Blake made it 4-2 to seal the win.

When asked about what he thought of the scrimmages, coach Nolan remarked: "Every once in a while the emotions boil over and you see it. We have big tough guys here like Brendan Witt and Chris Simon, but a guy like Joe Grimaldi is trying to make a name for himself here. There's no question he's caught my eye. He's playing with energy.” Nolan also noted that he was impressed with Jason Blake's leadership and energy.

Head Pro Scout Tony Feltrin remarked that he was impressed on the day with the play of Trent Hunter and Petteri Nokelainen. Ken Morrow coached Team Nystrom.

Camp Update - Sept. 16, 2006

Bryan Trottier pointed out two players that have stood out the most to him thus far. On the veteran side he has been impressed with Viktor Kozlov, who signed with the Islanders a few days before camp started. Among the young players, Trottier pointed out that Robert Nilsson has been dancing around with the puck.

Scrimmages:

Team names have been changed to Arbour & Torrey for the annual Blue-White game. Team Arbour came away with the win, 3-2. Kozlov and Jeff Tambellini teamed up for a goal and an assist each in the win. The other Arbour goal came from rookie Jason Pitton. Team Torrey got goals from Miroslav Satan and Peter Ferraro on a one-timer. Camp invitee Mike Dunham alloed one goal on 14 shots for Team Torrey while another invitee, Mike Mole made 14 saves on 15 shots.

Luch Aquino, who was one of the most dangerous breakaway players in the OHL with Brampton last season, was awarded a penalty shot after getting hauled down. Mole stopped the second attempt by Aquino.

Surprisingly, the first fight of camp involved Jason Blake, who only got into one fight for the entire 2004-05 season. Blake went toe to toe with camp invitee Joe Grimaldi, a Long Island native playing with the Ottawa 67's. Blake took exception of a hit from Grimaldi.

All scrimmages have a shootout at the edn. Today the only goal scored was by Team Arbour's Jeremy Colliton.

Following the game, Nolan praised the players for showing much more effort than the previous day. He was extremely pleased with the play thus far of Viktor Kozlov, Jeff Tambellini and the third member of the line, camp invitee Jamie Johnson. Nolan believes he may be able to get more out of Kozlov if he can get his speed going. Could Nolan be the one who finally gets the most out of Kozlov's game?

As far as the fight, Nolan said he usually doesn't allow them. But a fight is a fight so he obviously saw a positive in it. Of the four goalies that played in the game, Nolan said he was most impressed with Mike Mole.

Camp Update - Sept. 15, 2006

Only the second day of camp and coach Ted Nolan was openly disappointed with some of the effort put into the two scrimmages conducted today. Asked what he thought of the scrimmages: "Not much. You'll hear me say this a lot: effort is not a sometimes thing, it's an always thing. That's what we need to be successful this year, and I just didn't see a lot of spirit out there today. It surprised me.

"We ask the players to work extremely hard for a short period of time," Nolan continued. "There will be plenty of time for rest. There will even be plenty of days off. But when they're on the ice, we expect everything they've got from everybody. We all know plenty of people who work 12-hour days, 14-hour days. We're going to need a lot more spirit, a lot more effort, from everyone."

One player Nolan did give praise was Blake Comeau. From Comeau he stated he saw tremendous effort and called him a heckuva hockey player.

Another player who caught some eyes was 2006 fourth round pick C Tomas Marcinko. The Islanders are hoping a found a sleeper pick. Marcinko will go back to Barrie for his second season in the OHL.

With color commentator Howie Rose expected to miss a large part of the first month calling games on radio for the New York Mets as they qualify for the playoffs, the Islanders have alluded to the return of a former Hall of Fame to the Islanders booth. It appears Jiggs McDonald will be making his return for some games to kick off the 2006-07 season.

The Islanders also announced today that they have signed 2004 third round draft pick C Sergei Ogorodnikov. Look for him to get a lot of playing time with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers this season.

Scrimmages:

Team Tonelli defeated Team Henning 6-5 thanks to a shootout goal by Arron Asham against Rick DiPietro. Team Tonelli got goals by Alexei Yashin, Robert Nilsson and another by Asham. Team Henning got their goals from Miroslav Satan, invitee Chris Ferraro, and 2006 third round pick Robin Figren. Even though team Henning lost, goaltender Chris Madden was impressive stopping all three of the penalty shots he faced.

The second scrimmage saw Team Henning defeat Team Nystrom 5-3. Team Henning received goals from Andy Hilbert, Jeff Tambellini and another from Figren to stake a 3-0 regulation shutout. DiPietro pitched the goose egg for half the game. In the penalty shot frame, veterans Trent Hunter & Viktor Kozlov got Team Nystrom on the board but Tambellini's second goal of the scrimmage sealed Team Henning's win.

Camp Update - September 14, 2006

The Islanders gathered for the first day of camp on Thursday to take part in physical tests and evaluations. On Friday, the players began skating and got their first scrimmages underway. The 58 players invited to camp were split up into three teams nicely named: Henning, Nystrom and Tonelli after the three Islanders who were involved on the Stanley Cup winning goal in 1980. New Islander coach Ted Nolan decided to watch the teams from the stands on Day 1 to get a feel for what he was to expect. Nolan said he focused on leadership the first day and the players that stood out were Shawn Bates, Miroslav Satan, and yes, surprisingly, Alexei Yashin.

The players were put through some breakout and odd man rushes to get their legs going. No contact drills on the first day.

Richard Park Invited to Camp

Sept. 13, 2006: The Islanders have announced that they have invited 30 year old right winger Richard Park to camp in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The 5'11" 190 lbs Park, from Seoul South Korea, saw action in 60 games with the Vancouver Canucks in 2005-06 and scored 8 goals and 18 points. Before the NHL lockout, Park spent three seasons with the Minnesota Wild where he averaged 12 goals and 25 points. He plays a very good overall game at both end of the ice but is not overly physical. His main asset is speed.

Park has also seen action over his career with Philadelphia, Anaheim and Pittsburgh, who drafted him in the second round of the 1994 NHL Draft. In his NHL career Park has gone 50-57-107 in 368 games played.

islesinfo.com comment: Quite a few invites in camp that could end up making the team. That could also mean less spots for rookies/prospects to make the squad. If the Islanders did sign Park, it's hard to believe both he AND Andy Hilbert would make the team. Obviously this will create a healthy competition and some players who thought they had a good chance to make the team will end up in Bridgeport when the season begins.

Mike Dunham Invited to Camp

Sept. 12, 2006: According to Newsday, G Mike Dunham has accepted an invitation to attend the Islanders training camp in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. It's very likely he will be signed now and most probably serve as Rick DiPietro's backup this upcoming season. Instead of going after a goaltender like Brian Boucher who is still on the market, the Islanders have chosen to go in the wrong direction once again it seems. Dunham seems to have the inside track since he is friends with GM Garth Snow.

Dunham played with Snow at the University of Maine back in 1992-93. Dunham was injured for most of 2005-06. He compiled an 8-5-2 record, a 2.77 GAA and an .893 save percentage with the Atlanta Thrashers last season, who paid him $750,000. He recently turned 34 years old.

September 10, 2006 - Islanders Announce Camp Roster: The New York Islanders have announced that 56 players will be attending training camp in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. That number could change during the coming week before camp officially starts.
