Islanders Send Bergenheim to Bridgeport October 3, 2005: The Islanders decided to make an interesting move today when they decided to send rookie C Sean Bergenheim to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Coach Steve Stirling stated that going into the opener Wednesday night against Buffalo Bergenheim would have been a healthy scratch. Since Sean is considered one of the Islanders top pros-pects, the Islanders would rather have him playing than watching the game from the stands. "We batted it around for a few days," Stirling said after practice today, referring to discussions with GM Mike Milbury. "We looked at it that Bergie was our 13th forward for the Buffalo game. Then we don't play until Saturday. Sean is so close. We know we can count on him. But the last thing this organization wants to do is have someone as important as Bergie not playing. Prospects need to play. He'll get plenty of icetime this week and I'm sure we'll see him soon." Bergenheim was reportedly very disappointed by the move but the Islanders believe that is a good sign. The team will now open the regular season with three rookies on the roster: Robert Nilsson (who has been moved back to the top line with Alexei Yashin and Miroslav Satan), Petteri Nokelainen (who didn't get a whole lot of icetime against the Rangers Thursday night), and Chris Campoli. Another reason for Bergenheim's cut is it is believed RW Arron Asham will be ready to return from nursing sore ribs that caused him to miss all of preseason action.
October 2, 2005: The Islanders Friday announced they had made the final two cuts of camp. D Bruno Gervais and LW Justin Papineau have been sent down to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the Islanders are now down to a 23 man roster. For Papineau, the Islanders believe his demotion is the result of a numbers crunch on wing. He recorded a goal and an assist in 5 preseason games but it wasn't enough to make the team. The Islanders will once again be monitoring his progress in Bridgeport under new coach Dave Bassegio. A strong start could find him making a return, but he must play better than the 18 goals, 33 points he posted last season with the Sound Tigers. Papineau surprisingly cleared waivers before getting sent down. He had to go through waivers because he signed a one way contract in August. As for Gervais, this is the second time with the Islanders he has been the last cut of camp. In September 2003 Bruno was cut on the last day of camp. This is his third year of a three year contract. Gervais will most likely be plugged in on the Sound Tigers top defensive pairing. Bruno did have another great camp for the Islanders and his departure to Bridgeport was prefaced by a nice cameo in NBC's show "The Apprentice" Thurs-day night. Wade Dubielewicz, Sean Bergenheim, Clark Gillies, GM Mike Milbury and coach Steve Stirling were also seen. Gervais seemed to get the most camera time. Interestingly enough, one of the girls on the show broke her ankle while skating on the Coliseum ice. Back to hockey. The demotion of Gervais means that the Islanders will have four rookies on their opening night roster. On defense Chris Campoli has made the team and has not stopped impressing the coaching staff since he was drafted. Also, Tomi Pettinen (not a rookie) has made the team as well. Up front, Robert Nilsson and Petteri Nokelainen have made the team meaning that the Islanders will have four of their first round draft picks playing in the lineup: Rick DiPietro (2000), Bergenheim (2002), Nilsson (2003), and Nokelainen (2004). Bridgeport: After dropping their first preseason game in a shootout 6-5 to the Hartford Wolf Pack last Wednesday night, the Sound Tigers bounced back last night for a 7-6 win over the Albany River Rats. Justin Papineau led the way with two goals, including one on the power play. Defenseman Allan Rourke also tallied twice in the game. Other goal scorers for the Tigers were Jeremy Colliton on the power play, Cole Jarrett, and Masi Marjamaki with the eventual game winner. Bridgeport went 4 for 7 on the power play and have gone 8 for 17 so far in their two preseason games. The Sound Tigers will play their final preseason game Monday night on the road against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Rick DiPietro made a left-pad save against Petr Prucha to seal the victory, allowing only a goal to Jaromir Jagr in the NHL's new tiebreaker format. Janne Niinimaa and Trent Hunter scored in regulation for the Islanders, and Jagr and Jed Ortmeyer answered for the Rangers. Ortmeyer tied it at 2 late in the second period when took a crossing pass from Blair Betts and snapped a shot past DiPietro for a short-handed goal with 5:38 left. It came while Jagr was serving the 11th of the Rangers' 12 penalties. But unlike the preseason opener between the teams, the Islanders scored once on the power play and allowed a short-handed goal. The Islanders entered with 61 power-play chances during the preseason, the third highest total in the NHL, yet only converted nine times - including three against the Rangers during a 5-1 win on Sept. 20. The Islanders scored at least one man-advantage goal in each of their seven exhibition games. They won't get to try it out again until the regular-season opener Wednesday in Buffalo. islesinfo.com Notes: A good win, second straight over the Rangers this preseason. The Islanders had some good and bad moments. Once again, there was a serious lack of killer instinct. The Isles have done a great job drawing penalties with their speed. They capitalized early when Hunter put the Isles up 2-1 with a power play goal. But on the night they went 1 for 12 and had seven chances in the first period to put the Rangers away early. Janne Niinimaa played well scoring a goal that may have been a gift for the Islanders as it was never really conclusive that the puck crossed the line. Later on in the period Niinimaa took a bad penalty. Tomi Pettinen looked shaky in the first period but did assist on Niinimaa's goal. He played better in the third period. His appearance and the insertion of Chris Campoli into the lineup in place of Radek Martinek most likely means Bruno Gervais will eventually be demoted to Bridgeport. Trent Hunter looked great and should score a ton of goals from in front of the goalmouth this season. Shawn Bates proved that he can still shoot the puck. Eric Godard dropped the gloves with Dale Purinton. Godard was inserted into the lineup in place of Sean Bergenheim. Mattias Weinhandl played in every preseason game for the Islanders but only recorded two assists. Miro Satan came close a couple of times to notching his first goal but it didn't happen. Robert Nilsson had a wonderful opportunity to end the game with about 10 seconds left but missed the net. Time for the real games to get under way. 2005-06 Islanders Preseason Scoring For more on the Islanders training camp and scrimmages in Yarmouth go to the islesinfo.com's Training Camp 2005 page.
September 29, 2005: The Islanders (2-3-1) will skate cross town to face the Rangers for their final preseason tune-up before the real season gets under way on October 5th in Buffalo. The team has received some criticism the last couple of days for not playing a full 60 minutes in their previous game against the Flyers, a 5-3 loss. Coach Steve Stirling was also unhappy with the mistakes and lack of a killer instinct that caused the Islanders to lose an early lead. When they have played well, the Islanders have done it using the speed and skill that GM Mike Milbury constructed the team with over the off-season to prepare for the new fast paced NHL. On Tuesday night, Stirling took rookie Robert Nilsson off the top line with Alexei Yashin and Miroslav Satan. He inserted Jason Blake on the left side and the line accounted for all three Islander goals. Satan has also been singled out for his lackluster play during the preseason. He hasn't scored a goal. But he doesn't seem to be phased by it at all and promised the goals will come once the games start meaning something. Expect to see Justin Papineau get one last chance to impress tonight. It's possible Stirling may decide to sit out Mattias Weinhandl, who has played in all six preseason games. On defense, Tomi Pettinen saw action Tues-day night, so it should be expected that both Chris Campoli and Bruno Gervais will be inserted on the blue line tonight. At the same time, the Islanders like to dress most of their veterans against the Rangers, so it will be interesting if Gervais gets in there. Arron Asham is still nursing sore ribs and missed all of the Islanders preseason games. Rick DiPietro played the entire game Tuesday night against the Flyers and it wouldn't be a shock to see him do it again tonight. Bridgeport: The Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost their first preseason game last night 6-5 in a shootout against the Rangers affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Sound Tigers got goals from David Masse, Rob Collins, Allan Rourke, Cole Jarrett, and Ryan Caldwell. David Madden and Frederic Cloutier split action in goal.
The Flyers improved to 4-0 in the pre-season and seem poised to open the season as serious Stanley Cup contenders after revamping their roster following the lockout. Philadelphia played without two of its biggest off-season acquisitions, former NHL MVP Peter Forsberg (right ankle injury) and Derian Hatcher (sprained left knee). Both players practised Monday with the Flyers for the first time and could rejoin the lineup within the week. Philadelphia also was missing captain Keith Primeau, who left practice Monday because of a bruised left shoulder. The absences opened some playing time for Sharp, fighting for a roster spot and without a point in the first three pre-season games. Forsberg will play on the first line with Simon Gagne and Jeff Carter, and the second line seems set as well, leaving Sharp in a scramble to make the team as the 13th forward. Sharp, who also had an assist, tied it 2-2 late in the first period and made it 5-3 on a power play in the third. New York's Jason Blake scored 16 seconds into the game, and Alexei Yashin made it 2-0 with a power-play goal for the Islanders (2-3). Mike Richards scored from the right circle on a power play midway through the first period and Sharp scored with 1:41 left to tie it. Kim Johnsson scored the third straight Flyers' goal with a slap shot early in the second on another power play. Yashin tied it with his second goal, and Donald Brashear scored the go-ahead goal for Philadelphia on a wrist shot 26 seconds later. Johnsson also had two assists. The Islanders (2-3-1) will close out their preseason schedule Thursday night at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers. Notes: Shawn Bates saw his first action of the preseason tonight. It was expected that perhaps Mattias Weinhandl would sit out tonight's game but instead it was Justin Papineau who sat out.
September 27, 2005: The Islanders (2-2-1) will be in Philly tonight to take on the Flyers in preseason action for the second time. On September 21st the Islanders dropped a 2-1 decision against the Flyers. Coach Steve Stirling stated that the Islanders will dress 90-95% of their 2005-06 lineup following the team's last line of cuts from camp on Sunday night and Monday afternoon. Thus far, Justin Papineau and Mattias Weinhandl are the only two Islanders to see action in all five preseason games. It is believed Weinhandl will get a rest tonight. Papineau may still be battling for a spot on the team. Stirling is looking for more from his veterans who didn't show up in their last outing Saturday night against the Boston Bruins. Battling for Jobs: On defense Chris Campoli, Bruno Gervais and Tomi Pettinen are in competition for the 6th and 7th positions. With Shawn Bates returning to practice from a hip flexor and hopefully Arron Asham returning soon from bruised ribs there most probably will be one more cut at forward. It looks like Robert Nilsson may stick around, and even on the top line, into the start of the season. Papineau could be in competition with Petteri Nokelainen for the final spot. The Islander plan on carrying 14 forwards, 2 extras, to start the season. Sound Tigers Camp Opens: Bridgeport Coach Dave Baseggio is ready to get his first camp underway at the Rinx in Shelton, CT following the Islanders cuts. Players thus far in camp are: FORWARDS (14) — Luciano Aquino, Travis Brigley, Kevin Colley, Rob Collins, Jeremy Colliton, Cole Jarrett, Matt Koalska, Mark Lee, Masi Marjamaki, David Masse, Steve Regier, Wyatt Smith, Joe Tallari, and Chris Thompson. DEFENSEMEN (7) — Joel Bouchard, Ryan Caldwell, Paul Flache, Mike Jarmuth, Vince Macri, Jody Robinson, and Allan Rourke. GOALTENDERS (3) — Frederic Cloutier, Wade Dubielewicz, Chris Madden. Where's Tarkki?: With Dubielewicz, Cloutier and Madden in Sound Tigers camp the Islanders haven't released what happened to camp invitee Tuomos Tarkki, who played so well in several scrimmages early on in camp. It would be a shame to see the Islanders not hold onto the kid after such a good showing. Tonight's Lineup 30 Garth Snow G
September 25, 2005: The Islanders today continued to get their roster down near the 23 mark by first re-assigning 2005 second round pick D Dustin Kohn to the Calgary Hitmen (WHL). Kohn impressed the Islanders coaching staff with his speed. "Dustin is definitely a kid we'll be working with," said coach Steve Stirling. "He has the wheels, and better than that, he has the smarts." Those sent to Bridgeport in time for Tuesday's beginning of Sound Tiger camp were G Wade Dubielewicz, forwards Wyatt Smith, Travis Brigley, Matt Koalska, Steve Regier, David Masse, Rob Collins, Kevin Colley, Cole Jarrett, and 2003 second round pick Jeremy Colliton, who also made an impression in camp with his defensive play and ability to win faceoffs. Defensemen sent to the Bridge were Joel Bouchard, Allan Rourke, and Ryan Caldwell. The Islanders now have 25 players in camp. There are 8 defensemen with Tomi Pettinen, Bruno Gervais and Chris Campoli battling for the 6th and 7th positions. Early predictions go to Campoli making the top 6 and Pettinen gaining the extra 7th spot. Up front, the Islanders have 15 forwards, including injured Shawn Bates and Arron Asham. Sean Bergenheim looks to have made the team with his energy as a third line checking forward. GM Mike Milbury said both Robert Nilsson and Petteri Nokelainen could very well stick with the team and get longer looks into the start of the season. Right now, Nilsson has looked the best while skating on the top line with Alexei Yashin and Miroslav Satan. Nokelainen has provided some hard physical play. Justin Papineau has struggled to stay in the Islanders lineup but he has played well in camp. Eric Godard likely won't play every game. It's likely at least one forward could be cut before the season starts on October 5th. Prospect Watch: The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds defeated the Erie Otters in OHL action last night 4-1. Ryan O'Marra returned to the Otters lineup from Islanders training camp, but did not factor into the game. Jason Pitton scored the Hounds third goal in the win.
A key member of the Devils' 2000 Stanley Cup championship team, Mogilny beat Garth Snow in the shootout, as did rookie Zach Parise. The Islanders' Justin Papineau scored into the wide-open right side of the net from close range to forge a 2-2 tie with 13:09 remaining in the third period. Parise had given New Jersey a 2-1 edge less than two minutes into the period. Radek Martinek, who helped set up Papineau's goal, opened the scoring with a power-play tally 5:37 into the game. Pascal Rheaume, beginning his third stint with the Devils, tied it just over five minutes later with a snap shot from the bottom of the right circle. New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur gave way to Scott Clemmensen midway through the second period. Brodeur, playing for the first time in his career without retired star defensemen Scott Stevens and free agent Scott Niedermayer, allowed one goal on 15 shots. Brodeur is slated to play half of the Devils' next game and go the distance in their two final preseason games. Snow played the whole game for the Islanders, finishing with 41 saves. Lineup Change: #54 C Rob Collins and #48 LW Steve Regier were inserted into the lineup in place of Travis Brigley and Eric Godard. Both saw their first action of the preseason. More Cuts: The Islanders have sent G Chris Madden, C/LW Luciano Aquino and RW Masi Marjamaki and defensemen Vince Macri, Jody Robinson and Paul Flache to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers camp which begins tomorrow. Aquino recently signed a three year entry level contract with the Islanders. "O'Marra was very impressive for a kid at his
first NHL camp, and Comeau seems to get better every day," said
Islanders head coach Steve Stirling before tonight's exhibition game in
New Jersey. "We're very excited about their potential to have an
impact on our lineup in the near future. The Islanders are looking to get down close to the 23 man roster heading into Tuesday night's preseason game against the Flyers.
September 25, 2005: The players in camp that didn't get a chance to play in the last two preseason games against Boston will get back on the ice for one more chance to impress the coaching staff tonight against the New Jersey Devils at the Meadowlands. There are still some open spots at forward and defense to be had and it is expected that the Islanders will make their biggest cuts of camp either following tonight's game against the Devils or on Monday in time for the opening of Sound Tigers camp. Seeing their first action of the preseason tonight will be D Allan Rourke and defenseman turned LW Cole Jarrett. Up to this point only Mattias Weinhandl, Petteri Nokelainen and Justin Papineau had played in all four preseason matchup's. Nokelainen is expected to get a rest tonight. Shawn Bates and Arron Asham are still nursing minor injuries and haven't seen any action yet. It's interesting that the Islanders have given Kevin Colley another chance to impress and haven't given Bridgeport's 2004-05 leading scorer Rob Collins a chance to make an appearance, unless he is nursing an injury we don't know about. This will be the last chance to impress for youngsters like Dustin Kohn and Jeremy Colliton. While Kohn has played well it may be a bit too early for him to move up on the Islanders defensive depth chart and he has a full season of hockey ahead of him most likely with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. As for Colliton, he played well in his first outing against the Flyers and he is looking for a chance to avoid starting the season this year in Bridgeport. Free agent signee's Wyatt Smith and Travis Brigley had good outing's as well against Philly and are looking for final impressions as well. "It's the third game in three nights for us," said coach Steve Stirling. "You know the Devils, being at home, will probably have a strong lineup. This is an excellent opportunity for so many of our guys to show us what they can do. It's also a good chance for our fans who can make the trip to the Meadowlands to see some of our future, like Kohn and Colliton." Most likely Garth Snow will start tonight with a possibility of splitting time with Wade Dubielewicz, who was shelled for six goals against the Bruins Saturday night. Future Glance: According to Newsday, C Ryan
O'Marra (Erie Otters - OHL) and RW Blake Comeau (Kelowna
Rockets - WHL) have been returned to their junior teams following
Saturday night's game. Both played extremely well during camp and with a
little improvement could be even closer to making the Islanders in
2006-07. O'Marra recorded an assist in Friday night's 2-1 victory over
the Boston Bruins. Tonight's Lineup 30 Garth Snow G
Joel Bouchard and Miroslav Satan assisted on Zhitnik's power-play goal, a slap shot from right inside the blue line that flew past Boston goalie Tim Thomas. It was the third goal of the preseason for Zhitnik. Boston then had several scoring opportunities, but Snow stopped 11 shots in the final period to seal the win for New York (2-1). The Islanders and Bruins combined for 17 penalties, but both teams struggled on the power play. Boston went 0-for-8 and New York was 1-for-6. Both teams failed to score with 5-on-3 advantages in the first period. Andrew Raycroft, a week after ending a brief holdout by coming to terms on a one-year contract, saw his first action of the preseason, making 11 saves in two periods for Boston (1-2). Thomas relieved Raycroft to start the third period and quickly gave up Zhitnik's goal. The Islanders took a 1-0 lead when Sean Bergenheim recorded his first goal of the preseason off a pass from Ryan O'Marra with less than three minutes left in the first period. The Bruins then tied the score a minute later when Eric Healey scored his first goal of the preseason by poking in a rebound past Snow.
September 24, 2005: Coach Steve Stirling has decided to ice the same lineup for both games this weekend against the Boston Bruins. The Isles defeated Boston 2-1, to improve to a 2-1 record in the preseason, last night and will head to Manchester New Hampshire for a rematch tonight. “It’s a good test,” Stirling said this morning. “We’re taking a lot of our key vets, like Yash and Satan, and Zhitnik and Janne on D, but we’re also bringing a bunch of the kids – O’Marra, Nilsson, Comeau. We’re playing an excellent team on back-to-back nights on the road. I think we’ll get a good read on a lot of our guys, and the ones who don’t play tonight and tomorrow will get a shot against the Devils on Sunday.” Seeing his first action of the preseason tonight will be D Ryan Caldwell who is vying for a job but has been relatively quiet thus far. The Islanders will most likely make some more cuts following the game Sunday against New Jersey as Bridgeport camp begins on Monday. G Rick DiPietro will not play this weekend in Boston as he is nursing tendonitis in his wrist. Shawn Bates and Arron Asham are still day to day nursing their injuries. Also seeing his first preseason action last night was RW Eric Godard. Tonight's Lineup 30 Garth Snow G
Both team's combined for 29 penalties and the game did not have as much flow as the Islander-Ranger game last night. The Islanders sat out most of their big guns that helped them defeat the Rangers, most notably Alexei Yashin, Miroslav Satan, and Robert Nilsson. Alexei Zhitnik on defense also sat out the game. That most likely could account for the Islanders going a dreadful 1-15 on the power play. Smith scored his goal only 1:36 after the Flyers took an early 1-0 lead to tie the game. The score remained tied throughout the second period as both teams took turns marching their way to the penalty box as the NHL institutes it's new obstruction crackdown. In the third period, the Flyers got a goal midway through by Branko Radivojevic and the Isles trailed 2-1. The Islanders were frustrated offensively throughout and sut down the rest of the way. Garth Snow played in the entire game for the Isles and played well despite the loss. "Not our best effort," said Stirling after the game. "We had enough fresh legs in there that conditioning was definitely not a problem. The execution simply wasn't very good, especially on the power play. Snowy definitely kept us in it." The Islanders also lost the shootout 2-1 when Snow yielded goals to Mike Richards and Simon Gagne. Mike York put one by Flyers' goalie Antero Niittymaki, who made saves on Islander rookies Blake Comeau and Ryan O'Marra. The Islanders will play next on Friday night in Boston. It will be the first of three games in three days as they face Boston again Saturday in New Hampshire and the Devils on Sunday.
September 21, 2005: Coming off their win over the Rangers at the Nassau Coliseum, the Islanders set out on the road for their next six pre-season contests. Tonight the Islanders face the Philadelphia Flyers in Trenton, NJ. On defense, Joel Bouchard and Tomi Pettinen will replace rookies Chris Campoli and Bruno Gervais. Radek Martinek will also make his debut in place of Alexei Zhitnik. Up front Travis Brigley, Wyatt Smith and Kevin Colley will see heir first action. As far as the rookies 2005 first round pick Ryan O'Marra and second round pick Dustin Kohn will dress for the first time. Other rookie hopefuls to dress will be Jeremy Colliton and Blake Comeau. "I've been looking forward to this since the day the Islanders drafted me," said O'Marra. "The scrimmages are great, but it's nothing like wearing the Islanders uniform against another NHL team. I'm sure it's going to be an experience I will never forget." "This will be a good opportunity to take a look at a lot of players competing for spots this season, along with kids that we expect will have an impact soon down the road," said Islanders head coach Steve Stirling. Tonight's Lineup 30 Garth Snow G
The Islanders power play looked absolutely lethal all night and had plenty of chances as the Rangers looked unprepared for the increase of penalty calls that the Islanders got use to in a couple of scrimmages up in Yarmouth. 1:39 seconds after Yashin's goal, the Islanders, back on the extra man attack, went up 2-0 when Alexei Zhitnik fired a blast past two defenders at the top of the slot. Zhitnik wasn't done there. Not even two minutes later and with the game only five minutes old, Miroslav Satan broke up a play in front of the Islanders net. He skated through the neutral zone with rookie Robert Nilsson, who made a nifty down low pass to the left of the net where Zhitnik was streaking in. The defenseman fired the puck into the open side of the net for a 3-0 Islander lead. The Rangers finally got on the board with their own power play tally when Jamie Lundmark capitalized on a pass in front of DiPietro. But the Islanders power play would not be denied a third goal as Mike York made a cross goal mouth pass to Jason Blake who snapped it past Weekes. The first period ended 4-1 with the Islanders notching three power play goals. The fast paced game saw a second period with lots of back and forth play. The score remained 4-1 heading into the third period. Coach Steve Stirling played some of the rookies even more during the third period, especially defensemen Chris Campoli and Bruno Gervais. The ice time paid off for Campoli as he broke down the right side and backhanded the puck through Henrik Lundqvist's legs to put the Isles up 5-1. At times, Campoli looked like the best player on the ice as he played very well offensively and through a few good hits. The Islanders would go on to win, but the NHL has every preseason game ending with a shootout no matter what the score. The Rangers scored twice (Michael Nylander, Martin Straka) while Yashin hit the goaltender's pads and Satan fanned on his opportunity. Mike York didn't get to take his shot. The Islanders didn't seem too disappointed anyway, they won the game and thumped the Rangers. Notes: GM Mike Milbury stated that there could be as many as 6 rookies to make the squad. The six in question are most likely Nilsson, Petteri Nokelainen, Sean Bergenheim, Campoli, Gervais, and possibly either Jeremy Colliton, Blake Comeau, or Ryan O'Marra. Nokelainen had a few good scrappy shifts playing with Bergenheim and Justin Papineau tonight. He threw some impressive hits including a couple that were out of nowhere and absolutely fearless. First Cuts: The Islanders have re-assigned junior forward LW Jason Pitton to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL), D Jaroslav Mrazek to the Toronto St. Michael Majors(OHL), and D Nicholas Tuzzolino to the Sarnia Sting(OHL).
September 20, 2005: The Islanders returned to Long Island Monday night after a successful week of training in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Many of the players bonded and team chemistry has begun to take shape, but the battle for roster positions are long from over. The big test starts tonight, when the Islanders begin their preseason schedule against none other than their cross town rivals, the New York Rangers at the Nassau Coliseum. That will begin a stretch of four games in five nights as the Islanders go on the road following tonight's game to face Philadelphia on Wednesday and Boston twice on Friday and Saturday. These games will tell a lot especially for the rookies looking to make the team. Coach Stirling has already separated most of the veterans into an Group A. Cuts will be made following the weekend which will be coincide with the beginning of Bridgeport Sound Tigers camp next Monday. Tonight's Defense: Chris Campoli will most probably see action tonight against the Rangers, but it's possible the Islanders may also take a look at Bruno Gervais, Ryan Caldwell, or Dustin Kohn. The Islanders 2005 second round pick, Kohn has also impressed in camp with his speed and puck movement. Forwards: Most all the rookies have been moved to a separate group. We should get a good look at two or three of them tonight. Robert Nilsson has really turned heads with his offensive tools. Ryan O'Marra, Petteri Nokelainen, Jermey Colliton, Blake Comeau and of course Sean Bergenheim could all see action, if not tonight then over the course of the week. Yashin to Wear 'C': According to sources Alexei Yashin will soon be named the next captain of the New York Islanders, which was discussed here on islesinfo.com yesterday. If so he would become the 10th captain in Islander history. Discussions of who would make good alternate cap-tains have narrowed Mark Parrish, Brad Lukowich, and Shawn Bates as possible candidates. Update - Tonight's Lineup: 30 Garth Snow G * Watch the game tonight on Fox Sports. It will be televised with the broadcast team of the Rangers, Sam Rosen & John Davidson starting at 7pm EST. I will have an update following the game either on the front page or in the training camp section of islesinfo.com.
One of Blake's opportunities came on a rare bad pass by Chris Campoli. The Blue Team continued their dominance in the second period and Pitton took advantage of his chances by scoring the first goal. That would be followed by Radek Martinek putting the Blue squad up 2-0. Masi Marjamaki set up Pitton's goal while Martinek's tally came on the power play. Justin Papineau continued his strong camp as he got the White Team on the board and cut the Blue Team's lead in half to 2-1. Soon after, the White's had a power play opportunity and a chance to tie it, but Joel Bouchard scored shorthanded on a Blake steal that made it 3-1. The White Team answered back with their own shorty by Allan Rourke, but Satan later put the Blue Team back up by two goals, 4-2. Alexei Zhitnik got on the scoreboard and made it 4-3 but Chris Madden shut the doors in goal and gave the Blue Team the victory. Below is the boxscore: There was also a shootout as the NHL has announced that there will be shootouts in all preseason games no matter what the final score is. Yashin tallied his second shootout goal of the weekend. Notes: Shawn Bates missed Saturday's practice and Sunday's scrimmage with a hip flexor. Arron Asham (rib sprain) and Petteri Nokelainen (knee tendonitis) also have missed the last couple of days. All are listed as day to day. Wyatt Smith was moved up into Bates' spot on Group A.
