- Training Camp 2005 -

Yashin Wins Scrimmage in Shootout

September 16, 2005: In the first full scrimmage at the Yarmouth Mariners Centre, the rookies were the stars of the show. Robert Nilsson, Jeremy Colliton, Ryan O'Marra, and Chris Campoli showed off their skills and got on the score sheet. Free agent signee Travis Brigley opened up the scoring for the White Team, but Colliton tallied on the power play to tie it for the Blue.

Campoli would put the Blue Team up 2-1 by beating Garth Snow after receiving a pass from Nilsson. Rick DiPietro made some big saves on a 5-3 advantage that kept the Blue squad in the lead. Late in the second period, Trent Hunter scored on the power play to put Team Blue up 3-1. Jason Blake and O'Marra received the assists.

The White team scored two late power play goals in the third period. Impressive rookie Blake Comeau made it 3-2 at 15:22 and Mattias Weinhandl tied the game with 1:11 left to play. As you can see, the NHL referees brought in to officiate the game have been calling plenty of penalties as they stick to their madate of calling all obstruction.

Alexei Yashin got into the act in overtime when he hit the crossbar behind Tumos Tarkki. In the shootout with the score tied 3-3, Wade Dubielewicz made stops on Blue Team members Blake, Hunter, and Nilsson. Tarkki was able to stone Miroslav Satan, but Yashin fired a low shot by him to give the White Team a come from behind victory.

September 15, 2005

A report on Wednesday's scrimmage: Oleg Kvasha and Mike York each scored a goal and two assists playing on the same line together as their Blue Team defeated the White Team 4-2. Mattias Weinhandl also played well as the third member of that line. Janne Niinimaa scored and Robert Nilsson tallied on a breakaway for the Blue Team. The White Team got goals from Miroslav Satan and Matt Koalska. The line of Satan, Alexei Yashin and Blake Comeau has continued to impress. Yashin and Satan are already starting to show some chemistry together.

As for Thursday's scrimmage, this time it was Team A vs. Team C. Team A, backstopped by Tuomos Tarkki and Rick DiPietro, shutout Team C 3-0. Scoring goals were Vince Macri, Trent Hunter and Sean Bergenheim, who has scored in every scrimmage he's played in thus far. Today also saw the first fight of camp, as Kevin Colley took on Luch Aquino following a collision between the two. Tarkki continues to be an early good story of camp. A decision on signing him will have to be made soon. Peterri Nokelainen looked good and was stoned a couple of times in front of the net by DiPietro.

The Islanders will be having an intrasquad scrimmage at 7:30pm Friday night. Reportedly many of the veterans, especially along the blue line, will be in the game.

September 14, 2005

Not much to report from camp today as scrimmages continued. Oleg Kvasha has reportedly been playing very well and playing on a line with Mike York and Mattias Weinhandl. Alexei Yashin and Miroslav Satan got their first bit of play together with prospect Blake Comeau on the right wing. Finn's Peterri Nokelainen and Masi Marjamaki saw their first action today as well.

If anyone saw the MSG piece last night, GM Mike Milbury said he believes Robert Nilsson is currently already the best playmaker on the team. They showed some good video of Nilsson, Nokelainen and Ryan O'Marra, including interviews. The Islanders rookie crop this year is shaping out to be possibly among the best they've had in years. As for O'Marra, Milbury and staff said they've liked what they have seen. It's doubtful he'll make the NHL this season. But there's no doubt he's at the most a year away.

On defense, it's obvious that the Islanders have decided that the sixth defense spot is Chris Campoli's to lose. He has been paired with Brad Lukowich early on in camp. Lukowich has praised Campoli, saying he's better than he heard he was.

Camp Under Way in Yarmouth

September 13, 2005: The Islanders arrived in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia last night and were welcomed by a group of fans, even in Nova Scotia. With all players signed, including Mark Parrish who arrived early in the morning on his own, the Islanders already got in a heated scrimmage. Team White edged out Team Blue 2-1 as goals were scored by Shawn Bates, Cole Jarrett and Justin Papineau.

With such a low scoring scrimmage, the story of the day had to be the goaltending. Rick DiPietro, Wade Dubielewicz and invitee Tuomos Tarkki played very well. It will be interesting to see what the Islanders decide to do with Tarkki, who was a Hobey Baker Finalist earlier this year. Bridgeport has already signed two goaltenders to back up Dubielewicz with Chris Madden and Frederic Cloutier.

Trent Hunter looked good in his first day of practice, hitting the post and almost burying one by Tarkki. Papineau scored the game winner in the scrimmage with an assist from Sean Bergenheim.

In a meeting with reporters, GM Mike Milbury stated that he will probably carry the maximum 23 players going into the season. He hasn't decided if he will take two extra defenders or two extra forwards. (comment: why not take one of each??)

Mark Parrish skated on a line with Robert Nilsson and Jeremy Colliton. Coach Stirling surely is keeping an eye on the youngsters in camp and every bit of time on the ice will factor into his decisions for future additions. Stirling stated that Nilsson, Bergenheim and Petteri Nokelainen have serious shots at making the team up front. As for defense, it's obvious that Chris Campoli has made a serious impression as he has been teamed up with Brad Lukowich early on as a defense partner.

Stirling has hinted that he has not yet decided who he will name captain. But we all know that it would be a slap in the face after stating all summer that it was his team, if Alexei Yashin does not get the "C."

Notes: Former Islander, Ranger & Devil Sergei Nemchinov is working as a training camp instructor with the Islanders and has coaching aspirations. He could wind up in Bridgeport this season.

September 12, 2005 - Rookie Camp Recap: The Islanders held their two day rookie camp on Saturday & Sunday and some fans got a look at the return of hockey as well as some future Islanders. Fans were not disappointed as they saw some of the best hockey played by the Islanders most highly touted prospects, their last four first round draft picks: C Sean Bergenheim (2002), RW Robert Nilsson (2003), C Petteri Nokelainen (2004), and C Ryan O'Marra (2005). All four shined during a two hour scrimmage on Saturday. Bergenheim notched two goals on the day while O'Marra and Nokelainen each scored as well. Nilsson showed off some of his talent with a few flashy moves.

Other players to stand out was 2004 second round pick RW Blake Comeau, who scored. Comeau, who many Islander fans questioned as a second round pick in 2004, has shown so much over the last year and if he continues to play as good as he has may make it tough for the Islanders to send him back to junior. The scrimmage also saw goals scored by D Chris Campoli, RW Luciano Aquino, and LW Jason Pitton. Along with Comeau, high praise was given to Campoli who had three assists on the day. One other player who played well was invitee G Tuomos Tarkki.

- On Sunday the first rounders shined once again. Nilsson played well offensively with three assists. Nokelainen received a lot of praise for his smart play from the Islander scouts on hand. "He's just so strong in all aspects of the game," said Islanders' Chief Canadian Amateur Scout Doug Gibson. "You look at the way he shoots the puck -- he gets his money worth every shift."

Coach Steve Stirling commented on how he loved Ryan O'Marra's intensity and competitiveness. With a 6'2" frame the Islanders are looking forward to seeing O'Marra fill out and get even stronger over the next year. "He's a competitor," said head coach Steve Stirling. "He's got some maturing in the physical department to do, but there's no doubt that Ryan's going to be a big part of our future. He's an impressive prospect."

- Campoli continued his good play and is poised to make a run at a position on the Islanders blue line this season. He is looking to make a lot of scouts look bad by letting him slip to the 7th round in 2004. Other players who looked good at camp were RW Masi Marjamaki and LW Steve Regier, who scored once himself. C Jeremy Colliton recorded a goal and an assist. Former defenseman turned forward LW Cole Jarrett tallied once as well. Scouts were still gushing over the play of Blake Comeau, as he and Bergenheim were involved in all aspects of the scrimmage. D Dustin Kohn also caught some eyes with his skating ability and ability to jump up into the play.

Goals were also scored by invitee D Mike Jarmuth and LW David Masse.
