Isles Defeat Devils 5-1, Click here for Recap
- With his first NHL deal in hand, the Isles prospect was returned to his junior team, the Acadie Bathurst Titan of the QMJHL. Gervais will once again take over as captain of the team, which has struggled to a 2-8-1-0 record in his absence. Gervais will find out in December whether he was selected for the Canadian World Junior Championship team.
- Both Czerkawski and defenseman Mattias Timander went untouched in Friday's Waiver Draft. Hopefully that will be good news for the Islanders as Mariusz, perhaps because of the wake up call by Islander management, has compiled three goals in the last two preseason games playing on the top line with Alexei Yashin and Oleg Kvasha. - After going undefeated with a 7-0 record during the preseason the Islanders are ready to get the regular season underway. Coach Steve Stirling has pretty much finalized his roster and it seems that he has decided to keep two extra forwards around due to their good play during camp as well as Dave Scatchard's ailing groin. Scatchard should be ready to play in game 1 in Washington. Justin Papineau made the team thanks to his strong showing with 3 goals in the preseason. Trent Hunter will also stick around probably as a healthy scratch to start the season. Tough guy Eric Godard has also made the team taking over the role of the departed Steve Webb. - Most surprisingly, rookie Sean Bergenheim has made the team as the Islanders have decided not to send him back to Finland. The Islanders really like his blazing speed and feistiness. The player most hurt by this decision is Justin Mapletoft, who despite a pretty good showing in camp and who most believed before the season was most likely to make the team, has been sent back down to Bridgeport as the last cut of camp. The Islanders would like to see the young center now start to improve his offensive skills at the AHL level. They know he can play well defensively, but they would now like to see him become more like the player he was with the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL in 2000-01 when he was named MVP after leading the league with 120 points.
- After he was dealt to the Montreal Canadiens in the summer of 2002, Czerkawski had a miserable season in 2002-03 notching only 5 goals and 14 points in 42 games while spending half the season in the AHL after finding himself in Montreal's doghouse. Upon returning to the Islanders Czerkawski vowed to prove his detractors wrong and prove he could still play. So far in training camp under new coach Steve Stirling, Czerkawski has failed to impress enough to sway GM Mike Milbury from leaving the former 30 goal scorer on the protected list. The Islanders have gone 5-0 in the preseason, but Czerkawski has not really contributed to that much while playing on a line with Alexei Yashin and Oleg Kvasha. He also has not impressed in practices. - As for Timander, his shaky play down the stretch last season and the fact that Radek Martinek, Eric Cairns and even Sven Butenschon have all moved ahead of him on the depth chart makes the soft Swede blue liner expendable. Problem is the Islanders have not been able to deal him this summer because of his $1.2 million contract they signed him to in 2002. That is too much for a 5th defenseman at best to be earning which is why it's highly unlikely somebody will take Timander off the Islanders hands. What is likely is that Timander will start the season with Bridgeport of the AHL. NEW YORK ISLANDERS
