C Justin Mapletoft: Scrappy, gritty, hard hitting, sound defensively, determination and character are all personified by Mapletoft's game. He has impressed coach Laviolette in camp and scored the game winning goal in the Isles win over Philly. He is a clutch playoff player and is gunning for the fourth line center position. RW Trent Hunter: many feel the big power winger is the perfect fit to play alongside Alexei Yashin on the top line. But Hunter at times can be inconsistent. But when he gets hot he gets very hot and can pot pairs of goals at a time. Laviolette has stated that Hunter has been inconsistent, but he notched a hat trick in a scrimmage and scored the first goal of the game in the win against Philly. Sometimes uses his size to compliment his soft hands. RW Martin Chabada: Chabada has
shown a little bit of everything in camp from an annoying, in your face
style of play to a complimentary scoring touch. He's not too flashy but
always seems to find his points. RW Eric Godard: A fan favorite whose stock has risen dramatically in camp this year. He can fight with the big boys and even though he only scored 1 goal in the AHL all of last season, has shown he has some offensive ability as well by scoring a few goals in camp and exhibition play with Bridgeport. LW Raffi Torres: Big things are expected from the 5th overall draft pick of 2000. Torres is clutch just like Mapletoft. He is a cannon ball on the ice in the mold of Steve Webb. Has shown he can contribute offensively at times but if he can combine some more offense with his physical game he could develop into a very good player. Oct 5th: The top six forward position are locked up by Yashin, Shawn Bates, Mark Parrish, Dave Scatchard, Brad Isbister and Oleg Kvasha. Claude Lapointe, Jason Wiemer and Jason Blake are locks as well. Arron Asham will probably make the team. He has benefited from the injury absence of Steve Webb. The final two spots will be filled by the rookie crop depending on who wins out after tonight's preseason matchup with the Devils. Though coach Laviolette has also stated that he pretty much plans on going with his opening night roster in tonight's game, so he may decide during the day what rookies will make the team.
Scrimmage Scoring ( Unofficial ) , After 6 games.
Sept 25: Steve Valiquette got the start in goal for the losing white team while Chris Osgood got the shutout as the Blue team won by a 7-0 final. Dave Scatchard had the first quality shot of the game against Osgood as he broke in alone after receiving a pass from prospect Marcus Paulsson. Paulsson will see a lot of ice time in the WHL this year with the Saskatoon Blades and in future years will probably be at the Isles camp instead of Bridgeport. Mark Parrish was next to get a good scoring chance for team white but was hit hard by Eric Manlow. Steve Webb has finally gotten back into action and that was evidenced by a few big hits. He crushed team blue's Alain Nasreddine and later bumped Ray Schultz and Marquis Mathieu. Chabada nearly scored the first goal of the game midway through the first period but was stopped on a nifty poke check by Valiquette. Not too long after that Webb got into the picture once again when he and Raffi Torres, two bundles of energy, collided together. Valiquette looked good early as he stopped a point blank shot by Alexei Yashin, who was playing on the line with Bates and Chabada. Big Valley continued to make great stops on veteran Claude Lapointe and another by Torres. Bates put team blue up 1-0 late in the period when he broke in all alone on Valiquette. Schultz started the play by getting the puck to Yashin, who in turn fed it to Bates. The speedy winger deked Valiquette to one end of the goal post and tucked it in on a backhander in the other side. That's the second time Bates has scored a goal like that in camp. - Osgood, who has been a bit shaky thus far in camp, had a great night as he made a spectacular stop off an Oleg Kvasha tip in early in the second period. That was when the flood gates opened for team blue. They went up 2-0 at 5:24 when Torres roofed one that Valiquette almost made an outstanding save on. It was Raffi's 3rd goal of camp. Less than 30 seconds later Bates scored his second of the game to make it 3-0 team blue. He knocked in a rebound of a Yashin blast on net. Tryout defenseman Kevin Bolibruck made it 4-0 when he top shelfed one by Valley after receiving a goal mouth dish from Brad Isbister who made a highlight reel to get into position. It became 5-0 when the Yashin line generated a 3 on 1. Yashin sent the puck into the slot and Chabada was there to get the easy tap in. Manlow scored his first of camp when he tapped in an Isbister rebound at 10:34 of the second to lift team blue to a 6-0 lead. - Nothing too spectacular happened in the third period. Osgood made a huge save on team white's Matt Higgins midway through. Chabada got the last team blue goal to make it 7-0. It was Chabada's 4th goal of camp as he is making it very hard for the Islanders to even think of sending him down.
