- Trade Deadline, Tuesday March 11 3pm -

Ozzie Odd Man Out

Mar 11: The Islanders have traded goaltender Chris Osgood and his $4 million contract to the St. Louis Blues along with a 2003 third round pick for prospect C Justin Papineau and a 2003 second round pick. More to come within the day...

- With Rick DiPietro ready to assume the No. 1 job and Garth Snow a capable backup, the Isles felt they could move Osgood. The 30-year-old is earning $4 million US this season and will be a restricted free agent July 1. The Blues weren't satisfied with the play of No. 1 goalie Brent Johnson or backup Fred Brathwaite. Osgood has missed most of this season with an ankle injury but returned last week. Osgood went 17-14-4 with a 2.92 goals-against average and an .894 save percentage this season. He was brilliant last season when he went 32-25-6 with a 2.50 GAA while leading the Islanders to their first post-season appearance since 1993.

- THN in February rated C Justin Papineau as the St. Louis Blues top prospect. St. Louis did not have any prospects rated in the top 50 overall. Here is what was written about Papineau by St. Louis beat writer Derrick Goold:

"Papineau made a preseason splash with 5 games in September, but has yet to dent the NHL because of his sporadic aversion to defense. There was a spot open for the gifted scorer if he had shown more gumption and assertiveness when backchecking or chasing after loose pucks. Word out of Worcester is Papineau has aggressively worked on a two way game without neglecting his offensive skills. The Blues have to decide about him because he must be protected in next season's waiver draft. Acquired: 2000 entry draft, 75th overall."

- Papineau was originally drafted by the LA Kings and almost acquired by the Islanders in the Zigmund Palffy deal. The Kings held onto him only to have him re-enter the draft in 2000.

Isles Acquire Niinimaa

Mar 11: The Islanders have traded LW Brad Isbister and prospect LW Raffi Torres to the Edmonton Oilers for D Janne Niinimaa, a 2003 second round pick and a 2003 4th round pick. This gives the Isles 4 solid top defensemen.

- Niinimaa, 27, has four goals and 24 assists in 63 games this season, while earning $2.9 million US _ third-highest on the Oilers. The offensive defenceman will also earn $2.9 million next year. In return, the Oilers hope the 25-year-old Isbister will live up to the hype that has surrounded him for several years. Isbister has the potential to be a premier power forward but hasn't blossomed with the Islanders. He has 10 goals and 13 assists in 53 games this season while earning only $1.8 million. Torres, 21, is considered a hot prospect. He has 17 goals and 15 assists in 49 games with Bridgeport of the AHL this season.

Trade: Lappy, We'll Miss You

Mar 9: The Islanders have parted with one of their most tenured players, LW Claude Lapointe. "Lappy" was a warrior for the Isles ever since he arrived a a free agent in 1996. Today he was dealt to the Flyers for a 2003 fifth round draft pick.

- Lapointe, in his 6 plus seasons as a New York Islander, accumulated 76 goals and 95 assists for 171 points in 535 games played. He finished tied with Jean Paul Parise for 37th on the Islanders all-time scoring list. This season he was 6-6-12 in 66 games played with 20 PIM's. Ever since he came to the Islanders Lapointe had a knack for scoring key goals and became a fan favorite with his hard working style and crashing defensive play. Where he was most valuable to the Islanders was in the penalty killing and leadership departments. He'll always be remembered for sticking through with the Islanders organization through the rough times. Islander fans would always lament how Lapointe could have been a better scorer if he had better hands. This deal clears up a million dollars in salary for the Islanders and he was slated for unrestricted free agency this summer.

- Lapointe is the only player to wear #13 in Islander history. He was signed back on August 14, 1996. A native of Lachine, Quebec, Lapointe was traded by Colorado to Calgary for a seventh round pick in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft on November 1, 1995. He was originally drafted from the Laval Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League by the Nordiques in the 12th round (234th overall) of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. The 5-9, 190-pound forward is 34 years old. He ranks 7th all-time on the Isles shorthanded goals list with 11.

- "It was a little bit of a shock to be traded, but when I heard that it was Philly, I was very excited, very pumped and I just can't wait to get there and be with the guys," said Lapointe. "They are a solid team and they have a chance to win the Cup. They have great players and are a gritty team. It fits my style and hopefully, I can do whatever is needed to help the team."

- "Claude has been a very good Islander," said general manager Mike Milbury. "We wish Claude and his family the best."

Isles Acquire Robitaille from PIT

The Islanders have sent a 2003 fifth round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for 27 year old C Randy Robitaille. The 5-11, 196-pound forward is 27 years old. Being a left handed shot, is he the winger acquired to play with Yashin??

- This season Robitaille is 5-12-17 in 41 games. Last season he went 10-20-30 in 40 games with Pittsburgh. He also saw 18 games with LA and went 4-3-7. In 239 career NHL games with Boston, Los Angeles, Nashville and Pittsburgh, Robitaille is 39-68-107. Playing for Peter Laviolette's Providence Bruins in 1998-99, Robitaille was 28-74-102 in 74 regular season games and 6-14-20 in 19 playoff games on the way to the Calder Cup championship. Robitaille wore number 22 in Pittsburgh. He'll have to change that upon coming to the Islanders.

- Perhaps Laviolette can tap his offensive potential. At worst he can take the place that Lapointe leaves at fourth line center. "Randy is a gifted offensive player that we believe is a good fit for us," said Islanders general manager Mike Milbury.

- The deal reportedly began as a proposed 3 way deal between Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and the Islanders, that would have seen Lapointe go to the Flyers, Robitaille come to the Islanders and winger Todd Warriner go to the Penguins. But at the last second that deal fell through, obviously on the Flyers part. But the Islanders still worked out individual deals with both teams.
