- Recap 2003-04 - Game 1 Preseason -

A Good Start

Islanders Open Preseason with Win Over Pens

9/19/03

WHEELING, West Virginia (Ticker) -- The New York Islanders made Steve Stirling's debut a successful one.

Jason Blake began a four-goal eruption with a power-play tally midway through the second period as the Islanders erased a deficit and posted a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first exhibition contest for both teams.

Konstantin Koltsov gave the Penguins the lead, netting a power-play goal at 11:23 of the second period. But Blake answered 71 seconds later, scoring with the man advantage to knot the game.

Justin Papineau snapped the tie 3 1/2 minutes into the third period to put New York ahead for good. Arron Asham and Trent Hunter also scored for the Islanders, who gave Stirling the coaching job after firing Peter Laviolette during the offseason.

Garth Snow started in goal for the Islanders and allowed a goal on 12 shots. Rick DiPietro came on midway through the second period and stopped all eight shots he faced.

Sebastien Caron went the distance in net for the Penguins and made 27 saves.

IslesInfo Pregame Preview

Preview

First NHL Game Ever in West Virginia

Sept 19: The Islanders will play their first game of the 2003-04 preseason at the Wheeling Civic Center in West Virginia.

Pittsburgh vs. Isles Preview: Listed as the home team, the Islanders will be wearing their Blue jerseys. This season all home teams will be wearing their dark colors, while white jerseys will be worn on the road. Ironically, the Penguins secondary minor league affiliate is the ECHL's Wheeling Nailers. The official website for the Nailers, WheelingNailers.com, will be webcasting the game over the internet. Pittsburgh has also been holding their training camp in West Virginia about 30 minutes from where the Islanders have been training. The upcoming season could be a long one for the Penguins as they have fallen on hard times recently, basically trading off all their marquee players last year. Only Mario Lemieux and Martin Straka and maybe Alexei Morozov remain as true offensive threats. It may only be preseason, but look for the Islanders to possibly take both games from the Penguins this weekend.
