- Training Camp 2002 -

 Preseason: Flyers 1, Isles 4

Coach Peter Laviolette is going to have some tough decisions to make. Last week when he sent a number of youngsters to Bridgeport it served as a wakeup call. After given a second chance some are making the decision to keep them or not a hard one.

IslesInfo Comments: The Islanders once again showed their muscle as they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 at the Coliseum. It was their third straight win as the Isles improve their preseason record to 3-1 with only one left to go in New Jersey on Saturday. The win was a bit of revenge as the only loss the Isles have suffered so far was thair first preseason game against the Flyers back on September 24th by a 4-2 score. It was an interesting game as it was mostly rookies getting the goals with the veterans setting them up. Goals were scored by Trent Hunter, Justin Mapletoft, Raffi Torres and Arron Asham. Hunter, who is still in the running to make the team, made it a 1-0 game midway through the first period on the powerplay thanks to a rebound from a blast by Adrian Aucoin on net. Hunter showed a new physical side to his game, something the power winger must do as he has the size to make some room for himself. It showed on the first goal as he shook off a defender to score on Flyer's goalie Roman Cechmanek. That was all the scoring for the first period, but once again the Isles got into penalty troubles but killed them off without any problems.

- In the second period the Islanders increased their lead by 2-0 when scrappy Mapletoft scored his first of the preseason after tipping in a shot from the point by Roman Hamrlik. The third goal by the Isles was a product of good hustle by Torres and Mapletoft. Once again a point shot was taken, this time by Ray Schultz, and Torres pounced on the rebound. With 8 minutes remaining in the second both teams changed goaltenders. Osgood made 11 saves on 11 shots. He was replaced by Garth Snow. Robert Esche came into the game for the Flyers.

- The Flyers got on the board five minutes into the third period when rookie defenseman Dennis Seidenberg fired a shot through Snow who was screened by Todd Fedoruk. The Isles were not phased and just about two minutes later scored off a cycling play from the nasty line of Asham-Jason Wiemer-Eric Godard. Asham would eventually end up in front with the puck and after taking an initial shot, poke his own rebound underneath Cechmanek and into the net. Asham had a goal and an assist in the game.

Fight Card: Late in the game Godard went at it with Donald Brashear, who is obviously a much better opponent for Godard than Turner Stevenson of the Devils. Both men traded blows, with Godard holding his own against the heavyweight. Though Brashear may have gotten the decision as he took Godard down towards the end of the fight.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Trent Hunter, Justin Mapletoft, Raffi Torres and Aaron Asham scored their first goals of the preseason to lead the New York Islanders to a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night.

Chris Osgood stopped 11 shots in 32 minutes and Garth Snow added 11 more saves for New York (3-1-0), which avenged its only preseason loss, 4-2 to the Flyers on Sept. 24.

Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg made it 3-1 at 5:26 of the final period with a slap shot from the point, the only goal for Philadelphia (4-4-0).

Roman Cechmanek started for the Flyers, allowing three goals on 18 shots. Robert Esche relieved Cechmanek 12 minutes into the second period and had nine saves.

Asham also had an assist as 10 of the 18 Islanders skaters had at least one point.

IslesInfo Pregame Preview

7pm start: The Islanders, 2-1 in the preseason after two straight wins, face the Flyers tonight at the Nassau Coliseum after defeating New Jersey last night impressively by a 5-2 score. The Isles showed some toughness that had the Devils talking.

Oct 2, Preview: The Isles and Flyers meet for the second time this preseason. Back on September 24th the Islanders lost in Philadelphia 4-2 in what was their first preseason game of the season. The Flyers are also coming off a win last night as they thumped the Rangers at home by a 5-3 score. Anytime you go up against the Flyers you have to expect a physical game with guys like Donald Brashear and Todd Fedoruk in the lineup. But the Isles should be ready for the task, just ask the Devils. Apparently a few of the Devils had something to say about the physical play of the Islanders.

- "It was deliberate. He told me he was going to do that," Devils hopeful Mike Danton charged after absorbing a faceoff butt-end in the face from Islander Jason Wiemer during the Isles' 5-2 preseason victory at the Coliseum yesterday. "I don't try to hurt anybody. It's not part of the game for me. I have absolutely no respect for that," Danton said. "He told me before the draw that he was going to do it." At the same time Danton was involved in numerous attempts to crash Rick DiPietro's net.

- "These are exhibitions. All that stuff won't be happening during the regular season," Devils captain Scott Stevens promised. "Most of those guys won't even be in their lineup. They had three or four guys trying to make the team." One of those players was defenseman Eric Godard, who started a pair of fights with Turner Stevenson. (IslesInfo: Yeah, we had a bunch of guys in there trying to make the team. Actually it was only about three. Pretty much the same amount they had. But yet, we still won the game. What does that say?)

- "He definitely wanted to go on the first one," Stevenson said. "On the second one I was a little tired. "Toughness is being a team, not just fighting," Stevenson said. "You have to play tough when the puck is down. It was a little different without Jimmy (McKenzie) in our lineup. They dressed a lot of guys who, I'm sure, won't be here when the season starts." ( IslesInfo: I guess this is what you say after you get your ass kicked two time :) )

Waiver Draft News:

Islanders Protected list: Arron Asham, F; Adrian Aucoin, D; Shawn Bates, F; Jason Blake, F; Eric Cairns, D; Roman Hamrlik, D; Brad Isbister, F; Kenny Jonsson, D; Evgeny Korolev, D; Oleg Kvasha, F; Claude Lapointe, F; Mark Parrish, F; Michael Peca, F; Dave Scatchard, F; Mattias Timander, D; Steve Webb, F; Jason Wiemer, F; Alexei Yashin, F; Chris Osgood, G; Garth Snow, G.

Unprotected: Kevin Haller, D; Konstantin Kalmikov, F; Alan Letang, D; Eric Manlow, F; Alain Nasreddine, D; Ray Schultz, D; Brandon Smith, D.

Comments: Not much surprises here. The only thing I could possibly point out is the protecting of Korolev over Schultz, especially if they have us believing Schultz is the 7th defenseman. If the Islanders should make a selection, which is doubtful since they basically pick 36th, they would have to then unprotect a current protected player. That could be Korolev if that case was to come true. Players with limited pro careers are exempt from having to be protected, like most rookies.
