- Training Camp 2002 -

 Preseason: Game 1 recap

The Islanders fell to the Philadelphia Flyers tonight in their preseason opener 4-2 and in the process proved that their gonna need some more work leading up to the season, especially on specialty teams. The penalty killing unit gave up 3 goals in the loss.

IslesInfo Comments: Of course it is the preseason. Time for making mistakes that hopefully you won't make during the season. Also, some players played tonight that obviously won't be on the opening night roster. A number of veterans did not play. Shawn Bates, Adrian Aucoin, Chris Osgood, Kenny Jonsson and Alexei Yashin all sat out tonight's game. Some guys are auditioning for a spot on the team, but it's pretty much written in stone that the Islanders top 6 defenseman are set at: Aucoin, Roman Hamrlik, Jonsson, Radek Martinek, Mattias Timander and Eric Cairns. That being said, the Islanders played Brandon Smith tonight, a free agent signee this summer ( wearing #6 in the photo above ). To be kind, Smith had a horrible game. He was on the ice for two of the Flyers goals, including one where he broke his stick and failed to clear the puck out of the Islanders zone. Garth Snow, who had been great thus far in camp and always gets the start in Philly, gave up to many rebounds. Three of the Flyers goals were off rebounds. Simon Gagne, who is hands down their best player, scored two goals for the Flyers.

- As far as the good signs for the Islanders, Dave Scatchard continues his hot play and seems like he is on a mission. He was relentless after receiving a pass from Raffi Torres in the slot. Scatch got in close after taking the shot and took two swipes at the puck, finally getting it into the net. Torres continued to play the same way he has in the last two scrimmages of camp. He laid a big hit on a Flyer that coughed up the puck so he could send it over to Scatchard. Late in the game, with the Isles down 4-1, Brad Isbister, who has had a good camp as well, made it 4-2.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Simon Gagne scored twice in the third period
as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Islanders 4-2
Tuesday night.

Keith Primeau and Marty Murray had the other goals, and Kim
Johnsson added three assists for the Flyers, who gave new coach
Ken Hitchcock his first home victory.

Dave Scatchard and Brad Isbister scored for the Islanders.

Both goaltenders went the distance with Philadelphia's Roman
Cechmanek making 29 saves and New York's Garth Snow stopping 26
shots.

IslesInfo Pregame Preview

Another test: The Islanders open up their preseason schedule tonight as they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers. Unfortunately for most Islander fans, this game can only be viewed on television in Philly. Results will be posted on IslesInfo later tonight.

Sept 24: You would think that after the Islanders had a revival year last season that they would garner a few preseason games on television this year. Or maybe even the radio. But the truth of the matter is, as long as the corporation that holds the television contract with the New York Islanders hockey club is the same corporation that owns the Islanders biggest rivals, yes Cablevision, Islander fans will never see a preseason game on television. The Islanders cable deal has a lot to do with the complicated Coliseum lease and stability of the team on Long Island. The cable deal still has a number of years remaining on it.

Preview: The Islanders finished one point behind the Flyers for first place in the Atlantic Division last season. The Islanders are thinking they have as good a chance as anyone to possibly win the Eastern Conference in 2002-03. But the Flyers will definitely be one of the teams in the way. Even though the Flyers got a new head coach in Kevin Hitchcock, it seems like the crop players that they have are getting old hat as they rely once again on the likes of Keith Primeau, John Leclair and Roman Cechmanek for yet another season. Bobby Clarke is definitely on the hot seat this year.

Auditions: Shawn Bates, Adrian Aucoin, Chris Osgood and Alexei Yashin are not scheduled to play tonight in Philly. That leaves room for some players to make their bids to make the team. It's obvious that the Islanders will be taking a good look at youngsters Mattias Weinhandl and Trent Hunter tonight. One of the two have a very good chance of making the top line alongside Yashin. Weinhandl may have the inside edge to this point after getting praises during the early part of camp. But Hunter had a huge game in his last scrimmage and we still remember his performance in the playoffs against Toronto. It seems most likely that the Isles will at some point send down Eric Godard and Justin Mapletoft for more seasoning in the AHL, but Godard has really impressed with his toughness and offensive skills so far in camp and is going to get a look tonight as well. Watch for him to possibly go at it with either Donald Brashear or tough guy Todd Fedoruk. Lastly, Brad Isbister and Oleg Kvasha have looked very well in camp and will both be in the lineup tonight. It's still only preseason but jobs can be won and lost and the coaching staff will be watching for possible line combinations. It is also a good time for new players and veterans to get used to the system as well as the NHL's new crackdown on obstruction.
