IslesInfo Comments: A shaky start for the Isles as just 25 seconds into the game Keith Primeau of the Flyers forced a turnover and broke in all alone on starting goaltender Garth Snow. A goal there by the Flyers could have been detrimental to the Isles psyche, but Snow was up to the task and made what coach Laviolette termed after the game as the game saving stop. Snow continued to be strong for the Islanders early on as the Flyers mounted a 7-0 shots advantage over the Isles. Both teams came out hitting and there were a few major collisions. Mattias Timander laid a huge hit on tough guy Donald Brashear against the boards, causing the Flyer's stick to go flying up in the air. Rookie defenseman Jim Vandermeer had a partial break on Snow of his own that the Islanders goaltender thwarted. But the Isles had some chances of their own. Alexei Yashin had the best chance when he walked into the slot for an open shot on net that Flyer's backup goaltender Robert Esche made the save on. He also stopped Arron Asham on the rebound. Shawn Bates broke down the right side and clocked a shot off the left post later on. The Islanders were obviously happy to get through the first period on the road with no score. - Just about 4 minutes into the third, it seemed as though the Flyers had taken a 1-0 lead but the goal was disallowed by referee Don Van Massenhoven because Mark Recchi had interfered with Snow. The Islanders may have caught a break because Asham had nudged Recchi into Snow. But instead the Islanders went on the powerplay and opened up the scoring themselves when Michael Peca chipped in a rebound on Esche. The Philadelphia goaltender had no clue where the puck was after Kenny Jonsson had sent the puck on the net. The Isles led 1-0 thanks to Peca's 7th of the season at 4:51. Shortly after the Islanders killed off a penalty to Jason Wiemer, the big winger would record an assist on another Islander goal to go up 2-0. With a loose puck drifting back to the point off the boards, Roman Hamrlik wound up for a clear shot on Esche. The shot wasn't all the strong but it deflected off a Flyer stick and redirected through Esche's 5 hole at 7:54. The Islanders almost took a 3-0 lead when Dave Scatchard had an open shot on Esche in the slot. He took a hard shot on net but grazed the puck off the left post. Oleg Kvasha, who was skating and enjoying a productive game, took a hard hit for the second game in a row. But once again he got up and continued playing. This time he was smacked by Dennis Seidenberg upon stepping out of the penalty box. Kvasha did not see him. Late in the period, Snow would receive matching minors with Simon Gagne. Snow was called for unsportsmanlike after he embellished getting hit behind the net on a dump in. Soon after Peca would get sent to the box for an innocent whack on the knees of a Flyer in the neutral zone. This set up a 4 on 3 for the Flyers. Philadelphia worked the puck down low to Jeremy Roenick, who tried to pass it up to the point to Kim Johnsson. The pass was fanned and the puck traveled so slowly through the skated of Kenny Jonsson and finally reached Johnsson's stick. Johnsson fired the shot past Snow at 18:50 to cut the Islanders lead in half to 2-1 going into the third. - Midway through the third period the Islanders would receive perhaps another break when a goal once again by Recchi was disallowed because Van Massenhoven had blown the whistle after losing sight of the puck underneath Snow's pads. The Islanders killed off another penalty to Shawn Bates and the period went by pretty fast with the Isles maintaining the one goal lead. With less than 4 minutes left to play, Laviolette threw out Brad Isbister who up till that point had only played a little over 5 minutes in the game. Isbister with some fresh legs forechecked well and made a diving play to keep the play alive in the Flyers zone. Upon doing that, he got the puck over to Bates who blasted the shot on net. Esche made the save, but Mark Parrish, who had not scored in 7 games and has been playing with injuries, grabbed the rebound and backhanded the puck into the net for his team leading 19th of the season at 16:10. The goal would be the insurance the Isles would need at 3-1. The Isles were out shot 27-13 throughout the last two periods, but the shots were not really indicative of the game. The Isles came up with an impressive win and responded after losing some key players and not showing up in their most recent game against the Rangers. Their record improves to 22-19-5-2, back to 3 games over .500, with 51 points.
More stats: The Islanders are 10-3-0-2 in their last 15 games....The Isles are 6-3-0-2 in the month of January....The Islanders are 4-0-0 this season in games played after games in which they have been shutout. So they usually respond after a bad game....The Islanders were 0-11-1 in their last 12 games following games played against the NY Rangers. The last win came December 27th, 3-0 vs. the Boston Bruins....The Islanders are 4-0-1 in their last 5 games in Philadelphia. They have never lost there under the leadership of coach Laviolette....The Islanders snapped a 3 game winless streak against the Flyers at 0-2-1. They skated to a 3-3 tie in Philadelphia back on October 17th, and lost two straight at home 6-2 on October 26th and 4-0 January 9th....The Islanders snapped the Flyers 4 game winning streak. The Flyers came in having won 10 of their last 11 games....The Isles improve to 10-7-3 on the road. Next Up: The Islanders head right to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets Saturday night. So no time to enjoy the victory as they look to go 4 games over .500 for the first time this season. The Islanders are the only team remaining in the NHL that has not recorded a win vs. Columbus yet. The Islanders are 0-1 this season against Columbus having lost 4-2 on home ice back on November 29th. Last March 8th the Isles lost in Columbus 4-2 as well. Following this game the Isles will return home for a 3 game homestand against Pittsburgh, Montreal and Philadelphia with the All-Star break in between. The Standings: The Islanders now with 51 points broke the 5 way tie and for a while held soul possession of 7th place in the East. That was before Tampa Bay beat the tough Dallas Stars in Dallas 4-1 giving Tampa 51 points as well. The Islanders hold the tie breaker with 2 more wins, 22 to 20, giving them 7th place and Tampa jumps ahead of the Rangers into 8th. The Buffalo Sabres, who have only lost once this calendar year but are still 9 games under .500, defeated Toronto 4-0 leaving the Isles just 4 points behind the Leafs at 55 points. The Carolina Hurricanes stayed alive in the East with a 3-1 win over Florida as both teams hang on by a thread in the first of a home and home. Funny Moments: Mark
Parrish, who has supplied a few funny moments this season, was asked by
Howie Rose after the game if this game was similar to the games the
Islanders won in Philly last season. Parrish replied by making a Freudian
slip. Before correcting himself with a laugh and stating that the Isles
have had some success in this building, he said "yes, we've had a lot
of sex" in this building. I'm sure his finance will have a few
questions to him about that! hehe Fight Card: none. No Godard in the lineup this time. So the Isles were looking towards a different style game. Plus with Cairns out there may be a lull in the amount of fights for a while since he was among the league leaders in the category. Commentary: The last couple of days i've been pretty down with the performance the Isles showed against the Rangers. And with the injuries you had to be a little worried. But this team bounces back. And they keep getting those much needed points. Like I said in the preview, this team has some leaders on it and there are still a lot of good players in the lineup. So they should still expect to win even if they are missing a few key guys. I'm very happy to see they finally beat the Flyers too! Now go into Columbus and finally beat them. Show the league that even with some missing players we will not miss a beat. The veterans stepped up tonight and showed some character.
Report Card: Brad Isbister: Was quiet all night and in only 5 minutes of ice time had done really nothing except lose the puck. But Izzy came out in that late third period shift, worked his butt off and made a great 2nd effort to get the puck back to Bates on the forecheck. Bates took the shot and Parrish got the rebound to ice the win. Alexei Yashin: Had 2 shots on goal and was even. Besides the great chance he had in the first period from the slot, Yashin was quiet for most the night. Shawn Bates: Notched 2 assists tonight, one on Peca's opening powerplay goal and the other off the shot in the third period that set up Parrish on the rebound. He also hit the post in the first period. Mark Parrish: After 7 scoreless games and playing through some injuries, Parrish scored his team leading 19th of the season to make it 3-1. Dave Scatchard: Assisted on the game winning goal in the second period by Roman Hamrlik. Jason Wiemer: Also assisted on Hamrlik's goal after just serving a penalty seconds before. Jason Blake: Had 3 shots on goal but nothing of real quality. Claude Lapointe: Hurt his foot blocking a shot in the second period and missed the rest of the game. Steve Webb: Sat out his 13th game with chronic back spasms. Is not really listed as day to day anymore. Some sources have him as indefinite as to a return. Arron Asham: 2 shots on goal playing for most of the night on the top line with Yashin and Kvasha. One shot came on a rebound of a Yashin shot from the slot in the first period. Oleg Kvasha: Finished even with 2 shots, but early on he was the Isles best forward. A couple of times he tried to skate in from the outside and make a move to the one. One time he was successful for a shot on. Michael Peca: Can anybody ever question his leadership? He scored the opening goal for the Islanders on the PP and got them on the right track after their recent bad loss. Mattias Weinhandl: Was scratched. Perhaps watching the game from the press box could do some good for the young talent as he has not been that productive as of late. Raffi Torres: Reinserted into the lineup. Played well in limited duty. Has that cool goatee thing going along with Sven Butenschon. Defense: Roman Hamrlik: Was a +2 and scored the game winning goal. Got highsticked in the first period and left the bench for just a brief moment before returning. Played 26 minutes. Adrian Aucoin: Missed fifth game with a groin strain. Is listed as day to day. Though Peter Laviolette said it should be "days to days". Even though Aucoin is listed as day to day, it could be a while that he is out. Shawn Bates recently missed 8 games with the same injury. Looks like the injuries are mounting up. Eric Cairns: Missed first game with dislocated shoulder. Will miss the next 4-6 weeks. Kenny Jonsson: Assisted on Peca's goal. Played 35 minutes. Played an excellent game. If he could have gotten a skate or stick on Roenick's pass on the 4 on 3 the Isles could have gotten the shutout. Radek Martinek: Was a +1 and made some excellent defensive plays in the third period, clearing the puck out of the Islanders zone. 20 minutes ice time. Mattias Timander: Was a +1 with 24 minutes ice time. Put a monstrous hit on Donald Brashear behind the Islanders net that resulted in the tough winger losing his stick up into the air and falling back. Sven Butenschon: Saw 10 minutes ice time. Played well. Though he made a couple suspect passes into the slot. Goal: Garth Snow: Made 36 saves tonight to earn his 4th win of the season and improve to 4-7-1. His last two starts, tonight and against St. Louis, have been reminiscent of good games he played last season. With this strong win it is uncertain if Laviolette will come right back with Snow in Columbus, or if Rick DiPietro will get the start as was previously believed. Snow was excellent early tonight as he stopped all of the Flyers shots on a 7-0 string. Plus he made that huge save on Primeau just seconds into the game that could have changed the face of the game and hurt the Isles psyche.
Coaches Laviolette took a timeout late in the second to rest his penalty killers. Unfortunately it did not work as Philly cut the Isles lead in half to 2-1 on the powerplay. But the Islanders came away with the win and they have not lost in Philadelphia since Laviolette took over as coach. Special Teams The Islanders PP, ranked 23rd in the NHL, went 1-3 on the night. Peca opened the scoring on the powerplay with his 7th goal of the season. The 13th ranked PK went 3-4, allowing a 4 on 3 goal to Kim Johnsson.

IslesInfo Pregame Preview Preview Isles to Face Adversity Jan 24: The Islanders tonight will look towards their leaders to guide the way as they face the latest round of adversity. With Chris Osgood and Eric Cairns out for extended periods of time, other players will need to step up. Isles vs. Flyers Preview: Consistency has a been a big problem for New York of late. The Islanders are 4-3-0-2 since a season-high five-game win streak and are coming off their worst performance of the season - an ugly 5-0 home loss to the archrival New York Rangers on Tuesday. In that game, starting goalie Chris Osgood sprained his left ankle and rugged defenseman Eric Cairns dislocated his left shoulder. Osgood will be sidelined three-to-four weeks, while Cairns is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. Garth Snow, a former Flyer, will handle the bulk of the goaltending in Osgood's absence. "When I first signed a contract to come here there was an understanding I would play,'' Snow said. "I'm excited for this opportunity and I'm just gonna take the bull by the horns.'' Cairns joins Adrian Aucoin as Islanders defensemen sidelined with injuries. New York has been outscored 14-0 in its last three games against Atlantic Division opponents. What's at Stake?: The Islanders are currently tied with 4 other teams for 7th place in the Eastern Conference. So things are getting sticky. Thanks to have more wins and games at hand on the other 4, the Islanders still technically hold 7th place. If the season were to end today, the Islanders playoff opponents would be the same Philadelphia Flyers they are playing tonight. But the Islanders need to worry about winning some games and making sure they make it to the post season dance, something that will be a little harder now with Chris Osgood and Eric Cairns out of the lineup. Tampa Bay, another team with 49 points but slipping fast as of late, will be in Dallas tonight. Not a good place to play right now considering Dallas is getting points out of every game as of late. Toronto will visit Buffalo tonight. The Leafs, 55 points, are 6 points ahead of the Isles. Buffalo is playing a lot better since the new year. Two struggling teams meet tonight in Carolina as the 12th place Panthers, 45 points, face the sliding Hurricanes, 42 points. Tidbits: The Islanders are 0-2-1 this season against Philly. But the tie came back on October 17th thanks to a late goal by Brad Isbister that resulted in a final of 3-3. Garht Snow was fantastic in that game, but was mediocre is the recent January 9th 4-0 loss on home ice. The Isles also lost 6-2 on home ice October 26th....Once again, Rick DiPietro has been recalled to replace Chris Osgood in the lineup. He will share the duties with Garth Snow. Ray Schultz has been recalled from Bridgeport to replace Eric Cairns in the lineup....Philadelphia papers have been talking up the fact that the last game the Isles and Flyers played, the 4-0 Isles loss, the Islanders tried to intimidate the Flyers by dressing Eric Godard. Godard has not been recalled for tonight's game....An anonymous Islander fan has apparently paid a hefty price to take out a full page ad in Newsday today asking the Islanders "Where were they?" this past Tuesday night against the Rangers. Full page ads in the Long Island newspaper reportedly costs about $10 thousand dollars. GM Mike Milbury? Owner Charles Wang? Or just some deep pocketed Islander fan?....Depending on what happens tonight with Snow in net, DiPietro could get the start in Columbus Saturday night. Coach Laviolette has not let on if he has decided yet. But he did say Rick will have more of an impact this time than his 2 weeks call up in December where he went 1-1-0 with a 2.02 GAA....That jerk Larry Brooks of the NY Post wrote a very brief preview of tonight's game for the Isles against Philly. Where's Grossman? Does anyone care anyway? It had a strong Rangers slant as Brooks metioned that the Isles were "demolished" and Bobby Holik may have accidentally fallen into Osgood, but perhaps Jason Blake should not have "run" Ranger goalie Mike Dunham earlier on. Can Brooks be any more non objective?
Flyers Just Keep Winning The Philadelphia Flyers have won 11 of their last 12 games including 4 straight. They just refuse to lose as evidenced by their recent comeback win at MSG against the Rangers. With the Devils right on their heels, the Flyers have the Senators on their radar.
Notes: As soon as the calendar read 2003, the Philadelphia Flyers elevated their game to another level. Surging Philadelphia seeks its 11th win in 12 games when the undermanned New York Islanders visit the First Union Center. The Flyers ended December in a 1-3-1 skid before opening the new year with a season-best six-game win streak. A 7-4 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers on Jan. 13 ended that run, but Philadelphia has won its last four games to maintain sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division. Jeremy Roenick and Mark Recchi scored 22 seconds apart in the third period Tuesday as the Flyers ended the Toronto Maple Leafs' 13-game home unbeaten streak with a 3-1 victory. "We believe we're just as good as anybody in the league,'' Recchi said. "You stay healthy, get great goaltending, and really stick with it, and you have a chance.'' While Philadelphia owns the league's best road record (15-6-3-0), it also has been very good on home ice of late, going 6-2-1. Much of the Flyers' success can be attributed to the goaltending of Roman Cechmanek and Robert Esche, and a defense that has allowed just 99 goals. Only the New Jersey Devils, with 92, have surrendered fewer. Cechmanek has won seven of his last eight starts, yielding 15 goals. Esche has proven to be a more than capable backup, winning nine of 14 decisions (9-2-3) while compiling a 2.01 goals-against average.
