- Recap 2002-03 - Game 71 -

Finally, Isles 'Handl' Sens

Isles 5, OTT 2: The Isles, fresh off a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers with newly acquired Janne Niinimaa in the lineup, were looking to gain some more distance in the Eastern Conference playoff race while facing one of their toughest foes in Ottawa.

IslesInfo Comments: The Islanders came into this game winless in 11 (0-9-2) against Ottawa and have one win in the past 29 games against the Senators (1-21-7), not to mention a five-game losing streak in Ottawa. So they knew quite well what they were up against. But the team has changed a bit over the past couple weeks and there was a new attitude coming into this game against Ottawa. It showed right off the bat. After the Isles killed off a penalty to Michael Peca, they took a 1-0 lead at 11:46 of the first period. Mattias Weinhandl entered the Senators zone and dropped the puck off to Arron Asham. As Asham batted the puck out of the air he dished it off to Dave Scatchard at the top of the left circle and he whipped it into the top open net above a sliding Martin Prusek, the backup goaltender for the Senators. For Scatchard it was his 23rd goal of the season. But less than two minutes later at 13:33 the Senators took advantage of a defensive mistake by the Islanders behind their net. Janne Niinimaa attempted to drop the puck around the back of the boards to Roman Hamrlik, but Marian Hossa intercepted the pass. As Hamrlik and Niinimaa protected each side of the net, Hamrlik made the mistake of charging Hossa who immediately dished the puck off to the front of the net where former Islander Bryan Smolinski was waiting. He tapped to pack behind Garth Snow scoring his 19th of the season and first as a Senator to make it 1-1. A minute later Magnus Arvedson took a holding penalty for Ottawa and put the Isles up on the power play. Jason Blake broke down the right wing holding onto the possession of the puck as he attempted to carry it into the goal mouth and squeeze it through Prusek. As Blake went through the crease he kneed Prusek in the head as the goaltender tried to stop him. With Peca following Blake up, a Senator defenseman hit Peca from behind and the Isles captain fell knee first into Prusek while he was on his back. With the Senators goaltender, who has beaten the Islanders twice already this year, unable to continue the Senators were forced to put Patrick Lalime in net for the rest of the game. Peca became a target after that because Ottawa felt he intentionally fell into Prusek and didn't try to avoid him. The Isles were able to capitalize on a cold Lalime when Jason Wiemer relayed the puck up to Weinhandl at the Senators blue line with only one defender back. Weinhandl mad a beautiful move to play the puck up to his stick from his skated and advanced in on Lalime. With the defender on his back he backhanded the puck at Lalime beating him at 17:33 for his 5th goal of the season and 2-1 lead. Scatchard also assisted on the goal giving both he and Weinhandl a goal and an assist in the period. The Isles were out shot in the first period only 10-9.

- The Islanders went on their 4th power play of the game when Shane Hnidy took a hooking penalty at 10:14 of the second period. It was on that penalty that the Isles would get a back breaking goal by Alexei Yashin against his former team. Yashin circled from out of the left corner and whipped a low to the ice wrist shot that fooled Lalime and ended up in the net behind him for Yashin's 16th of the season at 11:43. Shawn Bates and Kenny Jonsson recorded assists. The crowd went dead at that moment as Ottawa fans shook their heads after booing Yashin all night long every time he touched the puck. Yashin raised his hands victoriously as he celebrated his first goal in Ottawa since he was traded to the Islanders. He did score once against them at Nassau Coliseum last season. His goal gave the Islanders a 3-1 lead. Less than a minute later, at 12:40, Jason Wiemer skated from out the right corner and tried to stuff the puck in behind Lalime, as the rebound sat there in the crease, Weinhandl jumped on it and buried the puck into the back of the net for his second of the game and 6th of the season to give the Isles a commanding 4-1 lead. Ottawa out shot the Isles in the second period 15-9 and led overall 25-18, but the Isles led on the scoreboard. Weinhandl's goal was his third of the season against the Senators as you may remember he scored his first NHL goal against Ottawa back at the Coliseum on November 27th in a 2-2 tie. The goal gave him 3 points in the game.

- Midway through the third period, Ottawa's Sean Van Allen received a double minor for roughing up Jason Blake. The Isles would take a 5-1 lead by scoring on their first power play attempt. The Isles flooded the zone and charged into the corner where Peca pulled the puck out and played it back to Niinimaa at the point. Janne passed the puck across the blue line to Roman Hamrlik, who let go the shot. The puck sailed past a screened Lalime untouched for Hamrlik's 8th goal of the season. The goal cam at 11:12 and kept the Isles on the power play since they scored on the first two of the four minute penalty. The Islanders pretty much cruised the rest of the way until late, when at 17:24 Hossa received a pass that broke him in on a two on one. Mattias Timander cleared the Isles zone but the puck came right back through the neutral zone and Hossa was able to beat Snow with a shot to make it 5-2. The goal was Hossa's 41st goal of the season. He is just three goals shy of Yashin's all time record for most goals in a season by a Senator. Eric Cairns was the lone defenseman back and he was visibly upset on the bench in the closing minutes for giving up that goal. But in the end the Isles skated away with the 5-2 win and moved back to 4 games over .500 at 32-28-9-2, 75 points. Good for 8th place in the East.

More stats: The Islanders are 21-12-4-2 in their last 39 games....The Isles are 3-4-1-0 in the month of March....The Isles improved to 14-13-5-2 on the road....The Isles season series against Ottawa finishes at 1-2-1-0. Previous result: The Senators won 5-3 at the Coliseum on November 12th and skated to a 2-2 tie November 27th. The Isles lost in Ottawa 4-2 November 30th....Ottawa is now 45-19-7-1, 98 points. They rank 1st overall for the President's Trophy, 3 points ahead of Dallas...The Isles are 8-6-4-0 in their last 18 games....The Isles are 13-10-4-0 in their last 27 games....The Islanders are an outstanding 20-5-3-2 in games when Michael Peca records a point....The Isles are 6-5-4-0 in their last 15 games....The Isles are 3-5-3 in their last 11 games....Roman Hamrlik's goal was the first by an Islander defenseman since Kenny Jonsson scored February 19th in a 3-0 win in San Jose.

Streaks end: The Isles ended an 11 game winless streak against Ottawa which stretched to 0-9-2. They are still 2-21-7 in their last 30 against Ottawa after the win. The Islanders ended a 5 game losing streak in Ottawa.

Next Up: The Islanders continue their 6 game road trip with game #4 in MSG against the New York Rangers. The Islanders are currently 2-1-0-0 on the trip. The last time the Isles were in MSG was two weeks ago to the day Monday night when they skated to a 1-1 tie. The Islanders dominated defensively for most of the game, leading 1-0 on a Dave Scatchard goal until Brian Leetch scored in the third period on an end to end rush. This game has plenty of playoff implication. A Win by the Islanders could all but eliminate the Rangers, putting them 9 points behind the Islanders. A Win by the Rangers could move them to with 5 points of the Isles, which at this point in the season really doesn't mean a whole lot. The Isles are 1-1-1-0 this season against the Rangers. Besides the 1-1 tie on March 3rd in MSG, the Isles defeated the Rangers 3-1 back on November 23rd thanks to a goal goal third period effort by now former Islander Brad Isbister. The Rangers won 5-0 January 21st at the NVMC and knocked now former Islander Chris Osgood and Eric Cairns out of the Isles lineup with injuries. If the Isles should get up by a couple of goals in this game it could get nasty. Though the Islanders don't want to risk injury going into the playoffs by getting into meaningless fights with the goon squad of Matthew Barnaby, Sandy McCarthy and Dale Purinton.

The Standings: the playoff race....

Pos. Teams Pts GR Mar 13th results
7. Boston 78 10 4-1 win at FLA
8. NY Islanders 75 11 5-2 win at OTT
9. Montreal 70 9 2-1 loss vs. TB
10. NY Rangers 68 9 3-1 loss at NJ

Fight Card: None. But if these two teams meet in the playoffs there could be some interesting story lines to follow. For instance, there is the whole Michael Peca - Zdeno Chara incident where Chara got mad earlier this year when Peca was thrown out of a game for clipping. Chara holds no punches when showing his dislike for the Islanders organization after they traded him. Now, they apparently feel Peca purposely fell on backup goaltender Martin Prusek causing him to leave the game with a head injury. So Peca may be a target once again.

Commentary: AWESOME Win!!! I am so glad we went into Ottawa and took these two points. Especially on a night when Montreal and the Rangers both lost, further ensuring our chances of clinching a playoff spot. I can't tell you how much I hate losing to Ottawa and the last few years have been hell watching them walk all over us. But the Islanders have changed as a team in the last few weeks and new players are coming in. Some of the players who were here over those losing streaks are gone now. Mattias Weinhandl was fantastic and I'm so happy they didn't include him in any deal. He could be our secret weapon against the Senators if we face them in the playoffs as he seems to have Patrick Lalime's number. I know it's only one game but after seeing this I honestly believe it's possible the Islanders could upset the Senators in the playoffs. I'll review this briefly here, but even more so if this series actually does come into fruition. Let me just look at their recent acquisitions that everyone is gleaming over. First off, when have you ever known Bryan Smolinski to be a clutch player? Maybe in Boston. They acquired toughness? Vaclav Varada is tough? Chippy in a very dirty way maybe, but I don't know about tough. And Rob Ray? Please!!! Come playoff time this guy will be lucky to get a minutes worth of ice time. He's a hot head as witnessed tonight and if the Isles can get him to make more stupid things like they did tonight they will be on the power play all series long. Anyway, I was thinking to myself before the game, that wouldn't it be great to finally end the streaks by winning big with 6 or 7 goals on their home ice. Well, 5-1 and eventually 5-2 I'll definitely take! Now it's time to take care of this Ranger crap once and for all and just end their misery. I'm SICK of these guys. And oh yeah, kudos to the NYIBC for venturing out 2 buses and attending the game in Ottawa. It was nice seeing two sections of orange jersey clad Islander fans celebrating with every Islander goal. Though, the sign "NYIBC love Ottawa" HAS to go!

Report Card:

Alexei Yashin: Scored a goal, the game winner on two shots on goal. What a huge goal this was. Yashin is currently on a 4 game scoring streak(2G, 3A). It was his first goal back in Ottawa since being traded to the Islanders and his second against the Senators. The fans looked like they were in shock as they booed him all night. Did they forget that he could score goals?? If this goal doesn't get him going even more so than he has been the last 4 games then I don't know what will. The power play goal was Yashin's first in 21 games, yet he is still tied for the team lead of 9 with Mark Parrish.

Randy Robitaille: Played over 14 minutes but had the most quiet of the three games he's played since joining the Islanders. He didn't register a shot on goal, but he still is opening some ice for Yashin and the fact that he is a left shot is creating chances for Yashin both at even strength and the power play.

Shawn Bates: Had 1 shot on goal and assisted on Yashin's game winning power play goal. Played very well as usual on the PK.

Mark Parrish: Played well but somehow was a -2 in this game. He did register one shot on goal.

Dave Scatchard: Scored the Islanders first goal of the game which gave the team a good feeling against a team they don't usually fair well against. Scatch then assisted on Weinhandl's goal that put the Isles up 2-1 in the first. He was a +2 in the game and his only shot went in.

Jason Wiemer: Assisted on both of Weinhandl's goals, was a +2 and recorded 3 shots on goal. Hurt his knee bracing for a hit against Bryan Smolinski in the first period but instead went flying after taking the hip. Returned to this game after missing the Edmonton game with a sore back.

Jason Blake: Led all Islanders with 5 shots on goal. Was a -1 and didn't record a point after coming off a 3 point night in Edmonton.

Steve Webb: Played in his 300th NHL game, all with the Islanders. He is the second longest tenured Islander after Kenny Jonsson. No shots on net.

Arron Asham: Did not record a shot on goal but was a +1 and assisted on Scatchard's opening goal.

Oleg Kvasha: Did not record a shot or a point in this game but played well mostly splitting time bertween the fourth and third line. Kvasha has been getting PK time since the Islanders traded Claude Lapointe and he's shown a skill for it. He even recorded his first career shorthanded goal on this trip against Vancouver.

Michael Peca: Assisted on Hamrlik's third period power play goal. He was a -1 and did not record a shot on net. He angered the Senators even more than they already are with him as they felt he purposely fell on backup Martin Prusek causing him to leave the game with a head injury. Peca was pushed from behind into Prusek as he followed up a rush play by Jason Blake in the first period on the power play.

Mattias Weinhandl: Scored 2 goals and added an assist for 3 points. Was not his first carerr 3 point night as he recorded 3 assists at MSG back on November 23rd in a 3-1 win, all in the third period. Last night was his first multiple goal game. Both of his goals came against Patrick Lalime. Weinhandl was a +2 and recorded 3 shots on goal. He was looking for the hat trick and came close a couple times in the third period. His first goal was a beautiful play where he kicked the puck up to his stick, skated in with a defender on his back and backhanded a shot past Lalime in the first period. The second came in the second period when he jumped on a Jason Wiemer stuff play rebound.

Defense:

Roman Hamrlik: Played just over 27 minutes and had 2 shots on goal. He scored a power play goal on the first of a 4 minute power play in the third period that put the Isles up 5-1. It was his first goal in 17 games and the first by an Islander d-man since February 17th in San Jose.

Adrian Aucoin: Played over 30 minutes. Had 2 shots on goal and was a +1 on the night.

Janne Niinimaa: Played almost 21 minutes, had 2 shots on goal and assisted on Hamrlik's third period power play goal. He has recorded an assist in both of his first two games as an Islander.

Eric Cairns: Played over 8 minutes. Was on the ice for the final goal which was scored by Ottawa's Marian Hossa and was visibly upset about giving up the goal on the bench.

Kenny Jonsson: Played over 22 minutes, recorded 2 shots on goal and was a +1. He assisted on Yashin's game winning power play goal.

Radek Martinek: Was a healthy scratch for the 2nd straight game.

Mattias Timander: Played a little over 11 minutes. Is not playing as much along with Cairns being the 5th and 6th defensemen. At times this season Timander has been shaky. He did make a good play last night late in the third period clearing the puck out of the Isles end, but he didn't get it deep enough. The puck came quickly back down the Isles end and Hossa scored to make it 5-2 Islanders.

Goal:

Garth Snow: Made 31 saves on 33 shots once again giving up only 2 goals. Snow was solid last night and the win pulled him to .500 on the season. With him winning his last two starts and a big game against the Rangers in MSG Monday he will most undoubtedly be in net for the Isles.

Coaches

Another good night for Lavvy as far as lines. He is doing a very good job finding cheistry among different players. The Isles though are still taking too many bench minors for too many men on the ice. Something that has to stop. They also seem to always take the first penalty of the game. At least last night they didn't have their usual slow start.

Special Teams

The Islanders PP, ranked 20th in the NHL, went 2-6 on the night. It's sure to rise in rank after notching another 2 power play goals. The Islanders now have 4 PP goals in their last 3 games. The PK, ranked 15th, went a perfect 5-5.

Islanders Defeat the Senators 5-2

.c The Associated Press

OTTAWA (AP) - Mattias Weinhandl scored two goals and Garth Snow made 31 saves as the New York Islanders beat the Ottawa Senators 5-2 on Saturday night.

The Islanders moved five points ahead of Montreal for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and a snapped an 11-game winless streak against the Senators - the NHL's top club.

Dave Scatchard, Roman Hamrlik and former Senator Alexei Yashin also scored for the Islanders.

Bryan Smolinski and Marian Hossa scored for Ottawa.

Scatchard opened the scoring at 11:46 of the first period, beating Martin Prusek with a shot high to the stick side.

Bryan Smolinski tied it less than two minutes later with his first goal for the Senators, beating Snow a shot from the side.

Ottawa then lost Prusek at 15:52 of the first period after he was kneed in the head by Mike Peca during a scramble in the crease. Prusek was slow to get up and had to be helped off the ice. He had allowed one goal on eight shots before being replaced by Patrick Lalime, who allowed four goals on 16 shots.

Weinhandl scored his first of the night with under three minutes remaining in the first when Wade Redden failed to tie him up at the blue line, allowing the rookie to go in alone and beat Lalime with a low wrist shot.

Yashin, who was given his usual unfriendly welcome by Ottawa fans, put the Islanders up 3-1 with a power-play goal at 11:43 of the second.

Less than a minute later, Weinhandl scored his second of the night, jumping on a loose puck in front of the net and beating Lalime.

Hamrlik made it 5-1 midway through the third, scoring a power-play goal on a shot from the point. Hossa scored his 41st goal of the season with 2:36 remaining in the game.

Coming into the game the Islanders, had just one win in their last 29 meetings with the Senators (1-21-7-0), the lone victory coming April 6, 2000.

Notes:@ Ottawa C Todd White returned to the lineup after missing two games with a hip flexor. ... Ottawa D Curtis Leschyshyn remains sidelined with an ankle injury, while Vaclav Varada missed his fifth straight game due to a knee injury. ... Chris Neil and Jason Spezza were healthy scratches for the Senators. New York's Justin Mapletoft and Radek Martinek also were healthy scratches.

End the Streak!

Mar 15: As the Islanders look to extend their lead in the playoff race, they'll have to do it in a place where success has been few and far between. Fresh off a season saving 5-2 win over Edmonton, the Isles hope to end their Ottawa woes.

Isles vs. Senators Preview: The Islanders picked up a very important two points and ended a four-game losing streak Thursday with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Jason Blake had two goals and an assist for New York, which is three points ahead of Montreal for the final playoff berth in the East with two games in hand. "It was a great effort by our team after being down early,'' Blake said. "It was same old story we'd seen in the last four games. But we battled hard and it was a great team win.'' Defenseman Janne Niinimaa, acquired from Edmonton on Tuesday, assisted on the Islanders' first goal of the game in his first game with his new team. "It was really tough,'' Niinimaa said. "My emotions were running. But I had to stay focused. And it's a good feeling to get the win.'' After Rick DiPietro struggled in a 4-3 loss to Vancouver, veteran Garth Snow stopped all 17 shots he faced over the final two periods Thursday and will likely get the start Saturday.

What's at Stake?: the playoff race...

Tidbits: Only two players on the current roster - Eric Cairns and Steve Webb - played in the Islanders' last win in Ottawa, a 2-1 victory on April 6, 2000....Alexei Yashin is riding a modest but promising three-game point streak (1-3-4). It is the first time since mid-December that the struggling star center has scored in three straight games....the Islanders are winless in 11 (0-9-2) against Ottawa and have one win in the past 29 games against the Senators (1-21-7), not to mention a five-game losing streak in Ottawa....With an Islander win and a Ranger loss to New Jersey Saturday afternoon, the Isles can all but make Monday night's match up in MSG all but meaningless....The Isles are 0-2-1-0 this season against Ottawa. The Senators won 5-3 at the Coliseum on November 12th and skated to a 2-2 tie November 27th. The Isles lost in Ottawa 4-2 November 30th....the Bruins, 3 points ahead of the Isles for 7th place, are in Florida Saturday afternoon as well. The Tampa Bay at Montreal game will be at night.

Playoff Preview?

With the Islanders currently sitting in eighth place, they could be on the road to a first round meeting with the powerful Senators. Something they'd like to avoid. Daniel Alfredsson and Ottawa enter tonight with 98 points, first overall in the NHL.

Ottawa Scoring

Notes: The way the Ottawa Senators are playing, they would prefer the playoffs to start right now. Ottawa looks to strengthen its hold on the league's best record when it faces one of its favorite opponents - the New York Islanders. The Senators matched a season high with their fifth straight win Thursday, as Wade Redden scored 94 seconds into overtime for a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers. Captain Daniel Alfredsson also scored and Marian Hossa became the second Ottawa player with 40 goals in a season as Ottawa opened a three-point lead over Dallas in the overall standings. The Senators have moved nine points ahead of New Jersey for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. "It's not a lot, but it's some breathing room, and we've just got to keep pushing ourselves,'' Alfredsson said. The Senators, who beat Boston 4-3 in overtime Tuesday, are 7-1-7 in the extra period this season. "We know we've got the skill to score in overtime,'' Alfredsson said. "Sometimes it's luck. I mean, last game against Boston they had a great chance earlier and missed, and we went down and scored. When you have confidence, things just seem to go your way.'' Before opening a four-game road trip Sunday in Detroit, the Senators will try to extend a 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) against the Islanders. Ottawa is 21-1-7 in the last 29 meetings, with the only loss in that span a 2-1 defeat on April 6, 2000. Hossa, who joined current Islander Alexei Yashin as the only Senators to score 40 goals, has two goals and six points in three games against the Islanders this season.
