- Recap 2003-04 - Game 4 Preseason -

Isles Beat Devils at Own Game

Isles 2, NJ 1: The Islanders were unable to beat Martin Brodeur last night(what else is new?), but they found a way to pot two against Corey Schwab as the Islanders stifled the Devils defensively and improve to 4-0 in preseason.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Oleg Kvasha and Justin Papineau scored in a 72-second span in the second period and the New York Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1 to remain unbeaten in the preseason under new coach Steve Stirling.

After giving up a soft goal to Jeff Friesen on the Devils' first shot, Garth Snow made 21 saves in helping the Islanders win their fourth straight game (4-0).

Vezina Trophy winner Martin Brodeur extended his preseason scoreless streak to 69 minutes, 38 seconds by stopping the first 12 shots by New York.

The Islanders got on the board less than three minutes later when Kvasha scored into an open net after a centering pass by Alexei Yashin hit off defenseman Sean Brown.

Papineau put the Islanders ahead 2-1 from right in front after taking a pass from behind the goal line by Michael Peca. It was the third goal for the rookie, who played 16 games in the NHL with St. Louis and the Islanders last season.

Friesen scored at 1:54 of the first period on a shot from the left circle that beat Snow between the pads.

The Devils, who shut out Philadelphia 3-0 on Tuesday, are 1-2 in the preseason.

islesinfo stats: The Islanders have won 8 straight preseason matchups dating back to preseason of 2002 when they lost their first game but won the next 4 to go 4-1. The Islanders are 4-0 thus far in 2003 preseason and have outscored the opposition 13-4, a GAA of 1.00.

IslesInfo Pregame Preview

Preview

3-0 Isles Visit New Jersey

Sept 24: The Islanders look to test their new defensive system under coach Steve Stirling against the team that has perfected the trap over the last 10 or so years, the New Jersey Devils.

Isles vs. New Jersey Preview: The Islanders will be skating into a place tonight where they did not have much success last season. At the Continental Airlines Arena in 2002-03 the Islanders lost both games played and were outscored 11-0. This will be the first game home this season for the defending Stanley Cup Champion Devils. Who better for the Islanders to measure up their new focus on a defensive trapping system than against New Jersey. It will be interesting to see if Martin Brodeur plays this game in goal for the Devils. Garth Snow will most likely play as Stirling is now alternating games between him and Rick DiPietro. Brodeur became the topic of the day around Islander camp when it was reported that he blasted Snow for complaining about the recent goalie equipment crackdown in an article that Brodeur is writing for a newspaper in Montreal. Brodeur said Snow "reminded him of a robot named Goldarak that he would watch on TV as a kid." Snow replied today that people in glass houses should not throw stones, possibly alluding to Brodeur's off the ice marital problems.
