- Training Camp 2002 -

 Preseason: Isles 4, Boston 3

The Islanders started off slow, something that plagued them at times last year. But today they showed some fortitude and mounted a comeback in defeating the Bruins in Boston 4-3. The Isles were down at one point 3-0 late in the second period.

IslesInfo Comments: The Islanders lineup consisted of mostly regulars. Specialty teams were not so much the story in this game as was the Isles first. Both teams combined for an 0 for 10 on the power play. But there was a critical shorthanded goal, scored by none other than the Islanders late in the second period that got the comeback rolling. The Isles had dropped down 3-0 off second period flurries that resulted in goals scored by speedy Sergei Samsonov, rookie Ivan Huml and former Islander Marty McInnis. With 17 seconds remaining in the second period Adrian Aucoin intercepted a pass on the penalty kill and fed Shawn Bates for a shorthanded breakaway. Bates, deadly on the penalty kill, finished second on the Islanders in shorthanded goals last season, one behind Michael Peca's team leading six. Bates bounced one in of the posted on a backhand past Bruin goaltender John Grahame, a move he has made popular this training camp. The Islanders trailed 3-1 going into the third period.

- In the third Chris Osgood was very steady and stopped everything coming his way to help the Isles mount their comeback. When the penalty ended at the start of the third period rookie Martin Chabada took advantage of mistakes made my former Islander defenseman Bryan Berard and Martin Lapointe. Chabada touched the puck but then the puck was redirected into the Bruin goal by Berard and Lapointe. Chabada got credit for the goal and looked really good on the Isles third line as he looks to solidify his place on the team. Just two minutes later the Islanders tied the game at 3-3 off a power move by Brad Isbister as he shook off two Bruin defenders to gain a rebound shot from Mark Parrish and Dave Scatchard. It was the Isles turn to but on the heat and at 9:11 of the third period Parrish scored his first of the preseason and the eventual game winner to cap off the comeback. Osgood was very strong in the third including a spectacular save off a rocket shot taken my McInnis.

Job Battle: Chabada looks more and more like a lock to make the team. He makes things happen and finds opportunities to score. Center Justin Mapletoft was given another chance to show his stuff by coach Laviolette and played fourth line center with Jason Blake and Arron Asham, who is taking Steve Webb's spot. Webb came back too soon from the bruised back he received carrying his bag to the bus on the first day of camp.

Islanders 4, Bruins 3

BOSTON (AP) - Mark Parrish scored the last of New York's four
unanswered goals midway through the third period and the Islanders
beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 Saturday.

Parrish and linemates Brad Isbister and Dave Scatchard combined for
two big goals in the third period. Isbister tied the game at the 3:26
mark before Parrish beat a sprawling John Grahame.

After Marty McInnis put the Bruins ahead 3-0, Shawn Bates scored a
short-handed goal for the Islanders with 17 seconds remaining in the
second period to cut the lead to 3-1.

Things started to unravel for Boston just 1:24 into the third when
Martin Lapointe knocked the puck into his own net. The Islanders'
Martin Chabada got credit for the goal.

Sergei Samsonov and Ivan Huml each scored their second goal of the
preseason 1:32 apart in the second period to give the Bruins a 2-0
lead. Samsonov one-timed a pass from Joe Thornton to beat Chris
Osgood at 0:44.

After making 17 first period saves for the Islanders, Chris Osgood
allowed three goals on nine shots in the second.

Grahame made 28 saves for the Bruins, who have now dropped three
consecutive games

Kenny Jonsson returned to the Islanders lineup for the first time
since suffering a head injury against Toronto in the 2001-02 playoffs.

Bruins defenseman Kyle McLaren remains inactive while requesting to
be traded.

IslesInfo Pregame Preview

1:00pm start: The Isles will travel to Boston to face the Boston Bruins Saturday in their second preseason game of 2002-03. The Isles are 0-1 after losing 4-2 to the Flyers last Tuesday. The Bruins are slated to start John Grahame in goal against Chris Osgood.

Rookie News, Sept 28: Some other notables that were sent to the "B" squad were players who Laviolette termed as inconsistent: Trent Hunter, Mattias Weinhandl, Juraj Kolnik and Raffi Torres. Ray Schultz remains in camp and seems to have a lock on the 7th defenseman position, beating out Evgeny Korolev who was sent to the Bridge. Surprisingly still in Laviolette's camp is Justin Mapletoft, who the coach said played very well in the exhibition game against Philadelphia and has garnered another look against the Bruins. Winger Martin Chabada, a 25 year old rookie, is making a strong bid to make the Islanders after combining some offensive ability with an "annoying" style of play.
