Isles Battle Back in Third

Isles 1, LA 1: The Islanders returned home as they hope not to suffer a letdown. They should get use to home ice as 5 of their next six will be at the Coliseum. Tonight it took an Arron Asham goal early in the third period to gain a 1-1 tie with the Kings, who they outshot in OT 8-1.

Kings finish solid trip by battling to tie with Isles

SportsLine.com wire reports

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The Los Angeles Kings were pleased to finish their seven-game road trip with another point.

Arron Asham scored early in the third period and Rick DiPietro stopped 29 shots, rallying the New York Islanders to a 1-1 tie with the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.

"For us to get a point walking in here at the end of a seven-game road trip is good," Kings coach Andy Murray said. "We knew they were going to be tough, but we battled hard."

Trent Klatt scored in the second period for the Kings, who have earned points in 10 of their last 11 games (4-1-4-2), including eight overtime contests. They finished their trip with eight points (2-1-2-2).

The tie moved Los Angeles into sixth place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of Dallas.

Cristobal Huet stopped 36 shots for Los Angeles.

"Huet was outstanding," Murray said. "He was a key part of our game."

The Islanders had two good scoring chances in the first period, but Michael Peca's shot hit the crossbar and Oleg Kvasha's shot clanged off the right post with less than two minutes remaining.

"When the posts are on your side, that's good," Huet said. "A little luck like that helps."

Klatt scored 90 seconds into the second period, grabbing a rebound of Joe Corvoa's shot from the left point and beating DiPietro.

Asham tied the score 50 seconds into the third when he one-timed a pass from Trent Hunter past Huet.

The Kings managed just three shots on a two-man advantage for 1:54 late in the third period.

The Islanders outshot the Kings 8-1 in overtime. Los Angeles hit the post late in the extra period.

"The five-on-three definitely got the crowd into it," DiPietro said of the 15,369 who attended the game. "It was a dull game until then. After that, we poured it on."

The Islanders got a scare with about 11½ minutes left when Hunter and Kings defenseman Brad Norton hit knees. Hunter, the team leader with 22 goals, left the ice, but returned later.

"It was a bit scary," Hunter said. "Right now, it's a little sore. We'll see how it is (Tuesday). I don't think he was trying to hurt me."

Norton agreed he wasn't trying to hurt Hunter.

"He just shot it, and turned at the last second," Norton said. "I was trying to hit his shoulder, but he made that turn and I couldn't move in time. I had no intention to hurt him."

The Islanders outshot the Kings 8-1 in overtime. Los Angeles hit the post late in the extra period, and a shot tipped by Luc Robitaille went over the net.

Notes

  • Islanders forward Michael Peca appeared in his 600th NHL game.
  • Los Angeles easily leads the man-games lost to injury category 481.
  • Hunter left the game with 11:20 left after being kneed by Los Angeles defenseman Brad Norton.
  • Kings coach Andy Murray is nine games away from tying the franchise record for games coached. Murray has 387 and trails Bob Pulford's 396. Murray's is six victories short of Pulford's record of 178 coaching victories.
  • The Islanders haven't lost to a Pacific Division team in five games this season, going 3-0-2-0. The Kings are 2-1-1-2 against the Atlantic Division.

islesinfo comment: Gotta love Asham. Maybe it's because alot of people including the Islanders management felt that he was capable of more this season that many were down on him this year for having a slow start. But to me Asham has been having another solid season and is coming on just like last year. He just needs to play with confidence. The Islanders hit the post about three times in this game. Michael Peca hit the crossbar early on a weird bounce and Oleg Kvasha put a shot of the crossbar that probably left a dent. The Islanders really turned it on in OT outshooting the Kings 8-1 but could not get the extra point. The Kings also hit the post in the OT session. LA has a ton of players on the injured reserve list including former Islander Zigmund Palffy. The Islanders are now undefeated in their last 6 at the Coliseum going 4-0-2....Besides Ziggy the Kings had two former Islanders in their lineup: journeyman Derek Armstrong and former prospect D Jason Holland. Former Islander Jeff Norton's brother Brad was on the blueline for LA and he stuck his knee out midway through the third against Trent Hunter. Trent left the game but came back later on. Norton said he wasn't trying to hurt Hunter after the game. The Islanders will now face Pittsburgh Wednesday night in a must win at the Coliseum. The Penguins are winless in their last 16 games having gone 0-15-0-1. They have dropped 13 straight on their home ice as well which is an NHL record.
