-Draft Central 2007-

Isles Take D Mark Katic

As we enter into June if your not in the Stanley Cup Finals there's only one other thing: the NHL Entry Draft. As the 23th draws closer islesinfo will be all over the coverage as the Islanders currently hold the 62nd pick.

2007 Islanders Selection Board

RD # Selection Pos. Ht Wt From
3 62 Mark Katic D 5-9 180 Sarnia (OHL)
3 76 Jason Gregoire LW 5-11 175 Lincoln (USHL)
4 106 Max Gratchev LW 5-10 196 Rimouski (QMJHL)
6 166 Blake Kessel D 6-1 210 Waterloo (USHL)
7 196 Simon Lacroix D 6-1 172 Shawinigan (QMJHL)

Islanders 2007 Picks (Updated 6/13/07)

3rd Round - 62nd OR 63rd overall =
3rd Round - 76th overall
4th Round - 106th overall
6th Round - 166th overall
7th Round - 196th overall

Total: 4 Selections (maybe 5)

Picks Lost:
1st Round - 14th overall *
2nd Round - 44th overall +
5th Round - 136th overall ^

* traded to Edmonton as part of the Ryan Smyth deal
+ traded to Washington in exchange for Richard Zednik

= conditional if Islanders decide to take PHI's third round pick as part of Zhitnik deal (or 2008 2nd rounder); ADDITION: I've seen this documented in two places so it must have some validity. Apparently, the Flyers have the right to swap their third round pick with Phoenix at #63(don't ask me how they got it as I have been trying to research it without success). Why they would do this for one slot I don't know. The 63rd pick right now is actually owned by Boston. But if the Flyers swap then Boston would get Phoenix's third round pick in 2008 instead. Of course this only matters if the Islanders decide to take the Flyers third rounder.

^ traded to Dallas as part of Niinimaa for Erskine deal
Note: overall positions are estimated right now and could be subject to change. * The Minnesota Wild lost the rights to D A.J. Thelen, a former 2004 first round pick. The NHL has awarded them the 48th pick in the 2007 draft as compensation, thus altering the Islanders picks by one. No 2005 first round picks went unsigned.

Isles Select D Blake Kessel 166th Overall

July 23, 2007:

D Blake Kessel
Born:
April 13, 1989, Madison, Wis.
2006-07: Waterloo (USHL)
Shoots:
Right
ISS:
 211th overall

CSB: Final Ranking 99th

Personal Profile: Nickname is Hank because his middle name is Henry – “some of my friends and my brother started it”… wears #20 after being turned into a defenseman by Waterloo coach Bob Suter… credits Bob Suter for having the most influence on his career because “he helped me develop into the player that I am today and he also showed me what it takes to be a good player”… patterns his game after Nashville’s Ryan Suter – “growing up watching him at the rink was special and then he helped me work on a few things during the summer”… outside of sports he admires his parents – “they have done so much for me; I would be nowhere without them. They gave me everything and always supported me”… most memorable hockey game watched: New York Rangers against the Chicago Blackhawks “it was the first game I ever watched in person and Wayne Gretzky was playing”… most memorable hockey game played: USHL All-Star Game – “it was in front of the home fans and with some of the best players around”… if he could take any three people to dinner he would choose: Phil Kessel – “my brother and best friend", Nicklas Lidstrom – “to ask him about the game and just to pick his brain” and Bobby Orr – “to meet one of the best defensemen ever and to ask him many questions about the game”… favorites include: Phil Kessel and Ryan Suter (NHL players), Boston Bruins (NHL team), NHL 2007 (video game), Rascal Flatts (country group), Jessica Alba (actress), Rounders (movie) and Entourage (TV show)… will attend the University of New Hampshire in the fall of 2007.

Islanders Minnesota area Scout Jim Hillman: Blake is a solid defenseman, who makes a good first pass. He plays the defensive side of the game tight, but likes to jump into the play, using his speed. Blake is a complete player, who improved every time I saw him. By the end of the year he was the best defenseman on a very good Waterloo team. Next year he will be attending the University of New Hampshire. (from nyi.com)

Isles Select D Simon Lacroix 196th Overall

July 23, 2007:

D Simon Lacroix
Born:
May 29, 1989, Ottawa, Ont. (Orleans, One)
2006-07: Shawinigan (QMJHL)
Shoots:
Right
ISS:
 148th overall

CSB: Final Ranking 148th

- Named to the QMJHL 2006-07 Rookie All Star Team
- lists favorite player as Alexander Ovechkin.

Red Line Report (April 2007)
Rising:
Simon Lacroix — Shawinigan went out four straight in the playoffs, but he showed well and also put up a lot of points down the stretch.

Islanders QMJHL Scout Mario Saraceno: Simon has a right shot, which is always a plus for a defenseman. At 6-2, 175 lbs he has a lot of size to fill. Simon is a smart defensive player, but also has an offensive upside. He makes that first pass well and plays on the power plays. Last year as a 17-year old he logged 30 minutes of ice time a game, but we expect he'll play even more this season. The coaches on Shawinigan loved his attitude and character. We're glad to have picked Simon in the seventh round, and look forward to seeing his potential once he fills out a bit. Once he fills out more it will help him increase his strength. (from nyi.com)
