2005 Draft Coverage Continued

Isles Select RW Masi Marjamaki #144 Overall

June 30, 2005: The Islanders selected their first European of the day in the fifth round. RW Masi Marjamaki is a draft re-entry player who was not signed by the Boston Bruins who drafted him in the second round, 66th overall in 2003. The Bruins did not come to terms with Masi and hopefully their loss will be the Islanders gain. Marjamaki is a very good offensive player and has some leadership ability since he was Moose Jaw's captain in 2004-05. He also was a key member of the Finnish representation at the 2005 World Junior Championships and was a teammate of Petteri Nokelainen's.

2005 Draft Recap

Overall it was a pretty good draft for the Islanders. They came away with a couple of good quality sure fire NHLers with Ryan O'Marra and Dustin Kohn. It's unsure just what else they will come away with in this draft. Shea Guthrie, Tyrell Mason and Nicholas Tuzzolino are project players. Guthrie obviously has the most potential and Tuzzolino's towering size could turn out to be an asset if he develops. Perhaps Masi Marjamaki and/or Luciano Aquino could be signed and we can see what they got in Bridgeport. Marjamaki was once highly regarded to go in the second round in 2003 so perhaps the Islanders can reveal a gem where the Bruins could not.

- Some interesting happenings: Russian LW Sergei Shirokov went undrafted. He was rated pretty high by the Hockey News at #41. He had an excellent tournament at the 2005 World Junior's for Russia going 4-4-8 in 6 games played. He also scored a memorable penalty shot goal against Rangers prospect Al Montoya.

- Other players rated high that were not taken: Slovakian RW Richard Lelkes, D Paul Kurceba who plays for Brent Sutter's Red Deer Rebels, RW Jason Lawrence and Swede's D Christopher From-Bjork and LW Oscar Sundh.

- Very interesting draft for the Colorado Avalanche. They usually have a strong scouting staff. After pulling off some deals and dropping down in the draft out of the first round, Colorado came away with Americans C Ryan Stoa, C Paul Stastny, LW Tom Fritsche, C T.J. Hensick, D Raymond Macias and the Seattle Thunderbirds C Chris Durand. That's six players in the Hockey New's top 100 rated picks, four of them in the second round. Not too shabby unless that's the only thing they based their selections on. Interesting enough, that wasn't the most. The Chicago Blackhawks nabbed seven players from THN's top 100, including Swedish D Niklas Hjalmarsson, who the Hawks drafted using the fourth round pick they acquired from the Islanders.

- Obviously the biggest winners are the Pittsburgh Penguins with the selection of Sidney Crosby. But I'm not so sure comparisons should be made between him and Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux. I'm sure he will be a great player and maybe even become the best in the NHL but I don't know about on the same level as those two greats. In my opinion, Crosby has not dominated at the junior level the way Gretzky and Lemieux did when they were his age. Also, he did not overly impress me during his two World Junior Championship appearances for Canada as he was never a clear cut, over dominating player. But I do think he has the potential to put up some numbers next season playing alongside Mario.

- Another Sutter was drafted when the Calgary Flames selected Daryl's son Brett Sutter with the 179th pick. The sons of Sutter's have not faired so well. Brian's son Shaun was drafted back in 1998 by the Flames and has since spent most of his career in the ECHL.
