Isles Select LW Steve Regier
148th |
| The Islanders
continue to select character type players in the draft by taking
Medicine Hat Tiger's towering left wing Steve Regier. A 1984 birth
date makes Regier two years older than most players drafted this
year, which means he's two more years developed and closer to making
the pros. He helped the Tigers make it to the Memorial Cup
Tournament and the Isles project him possible soon playing in
Bridgeport. |

Isles select D Jaroslav Mrazek
179th |
| The Islanders
now begin to focus on defense with selection Jaroslav Mrazek from
Sparta Praha of the Czech Republic. Mrazek has very good size at 6-3
and 200lbs. The Islanders scouts like his mentality in the defensive
zone stating that he goes into the corners like a bull in a china
shop. They believe he already has very good skills, is a good skater
and has good straight away speed. He takes his game very seriously
and sometimes gets on himself too much. But that is a good
sign. |
- Mrazek played for the Czech Republic at the 2004 WJC's
and finished a +2. He will most likely play for Sparta Praha in the
ExtraLeague elite division in 2004-05.

Isles select D Emil Axelsson
210th |
| Continuing
their focus on defense the Islanders selected Swedish defenseman
Emil Axelsson with the 210th pick overall. The Islanders like
Axelsson and described him as pretty much the same type of
defenseman as Jaroslav Mrazek as far as playing style. Axelsson also
likes to play physical and has been described at times as a chippy
player. |
Central Scouting Bureau: Emil Axelsson
A fairly mobile skater....good overall skill
level....moves the puck well....is a good playmaker and
passer....impressive in the defensive zone....also has decent offensive
skills including a hard, accurate shot....likes to join the offense....has
great size for his age....likes to play a physical, aggressive style of
game....a very good competitor with a winning attitude, works hard for the
team on every shift....big and strong.
From Eliteprospects.com:
Emil Axelsson was virtually unknown before this season.
He had been playing tier II junior hockey but progressed to the point that
he was ready to play with Örebro in the 2nd-tier league. Axelsson quickly
displayed a strong overall game playing with his young teammate Carl
Gunnarsson, who is eligible for the 2005 Entry Draft. Axelsson is an
aggressive defenseman that definitely does not shy away from the rough
stuff. He enjoys using his body as much as possible and sometimes his
stick too as he gives out cheap shots from time to time. Being of such a
large stature he is a quite capable skater and he doesn’t hesitate to
join the rush.
During the U18 World Junior Championships Axelsson’s team was relegated
from the second tier league and he has now moved to Linköping where he
will chiefly play in the U20-league. The competition for a roster spot in
the SEL is tough and he will fight for ice-time with talented defensemen
such as Albin Lorentzon and the previously mentioned Carl Gunnarsson, who
has also singed with Linköping.
islesinfo.com: Orebro must have been a pretty bad
team in 2003-04 as Axelsson finished a -26.

Isles select D Chris Campoli
227th |
| The Isles take
their third defenseman in a row and fourth of the draft by selecting
6-0, 190 pound Chris Campoli, last seasons captain of the OHL's Erie
Otters. Campoli is described as a solid citizen as he won the CHL's
Humanitarian of the Year award in 2003-04. He'll soon turn 20 and
should challenge for a spot with Bridgeport of the AHL in 2004-05.
Like Regier, Campoli has been passed over unfairly in the last two
drafts. |
- Campoli has very good offensive upside as he broke
Erie's record last season for most points in a season by a defenseman. He
quarterbacked their power play, is hard to knock off his skates, has
leadership qualities, character, and knows how to move the puck. He brings
a lot of intangibles to the game. He was named by OHL managers to the
third All-Star Team at the end of the 2003-04 season.

Isles select LW Jason Pitton
244th |
| The Islanders
saw potential in their 8th round selection left wing Jason Pitton
from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL. An 18 year old, he
has some size at 6-2 and 196 pounds. He only has one year under his
belt of major junior hockey and the Islanders will keep an eye on
his development. They feel he has good fundamental skills and needs
to realize his potential. He was moved around a lot last season and
never really settled in, but he should be counted on more in the
2004-05 season. Not a high scorer, but once again a character guy. |
Central Scouting Bureau: Jason Pitton
Is an adequate skater with a bent over style and wide
stance....on any given night he is most noticeable for his forechecking
and his "go to the net" mentality....must improve both his
skating skills and puckhandling in order to contribute more to the
offense....is a gritty competitor who works hard on most occasions....has
been used on the point on the power-play at times during this season, but
is primarily used as an up-and-down winger in a more defensive role.

Isles select G Sylvain Michaud
276th |
| The Islanders
closed their 2004 draft by selecting one of the best goaltenders in
the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Michaud is 19 years old and
was passed over for the 2003 draft, despite having been ranked 12th
among goaltenders on the 2003 CSB rankings at the midterm mark.
Despite playing for a bad team in 2003-04, Michaud posted a 2.92 GAA
after 62 games played in the high scoring league. |
