Men on the Move?

June 17: With the annual draft being just four days away, the Islanders roster is sure to get a bit of a facelift following the disappointment of the 2002-03 season. With unrest in the locker room, rumor has two Isles possibly headed elsewhere.

- An article in the Florida Sun Sentinel Monday, covering the draft for the Florida Panthers who own the #1 overall selection, suggested that a number of teams have contacted Florida GM Rick Dudley with possible trade offers for the pick. One of those GM's has been rumored to be our very own "Mad" Mike Milbury, who has vowed to rid the Islanders locker room of possible cancerous personalities by returning to his draft day form of making some noise. Apparently, Milbury has offered Mark Parrish back to the Panthers in a package that would include the Islanders receiving the #1 overall pick. With the pick, the Islanders could possibly draft an elite forward to develop alongside Alexei Yashin.

Parrish, who began his career with Florida, was traded to the Islanders in 2000 after two seasons in the NHL. In his three years with the Islanders he has averaged 23 goals a season, including a career high 30 in 2001-02.

Another man on the hot seat is speedy penalty killing winger Jason Blake. Even after a break out season in which he scored a career high 25 goals and 55 points, Blake rubbed some teammates the wrong way last year. It's well known that Blake skates at 110% every shift, but at the same time he developed a reputation of a bit of a puck hog. Blake's noticeable incidents between him and some of his teammates(the Roman Hamrlik pregame punch etc, etc) and his rumored friendship being limited to that of just Michael Peca, the factions created there between players and coaches that cause Peter Laviolette to lose his job has Blake as a prime candidate to be moved, especially since he may be at a peak right now.

One player who looks to be safe right now, possibly, is Dave Scatchard as he is scheduled to be appearing at the Islanders annual draft party. Plus he has become a bit of a Milbury favorite.

Milbury Sets Eye on Nikolai

June 18: Even though Mike Milbury pulled off a few trades at the draft last year, it was considered an off year by some for a guy that likes to steal the spotlight. But this year some believe "Mad Mike" will rear his head as he has zoned in on his target....

"I'm nosing around to see if there's a little more we can do," Milbury said Monday. "But I'm not commenting on anything in particular ... I have nothing at all I'd consider warm or lukewarm."

The Islanders have reportedly set their radar on Russian 18 year old winger Nikolai Zherdev. He's considered a game breaker by some scouts and has been compared to the likes of Ilya Kovalchuk, the flashy goal scoring winger drafted #1 overall by Atlanta in 2001. Some believe Zherdev could possibly join the NHL next season, and the Islanders are looking for someone to develop alongside top center Alexei Yashin. Zherdev was the consensus #1 pick in 2003 going back to last years draft, but since then a group of two or three have caught up to him.

Another possibility is Czech winger Milan Michalek, a lefthanded shot who is considered a more well-rounded player and gifted playmaker but not as good of a finisher as Zherdev. The top-ranked North American skater is Canadian center Eric Staal (6-3, 182 pounds), also a lefthanded shot.

Each of the three have been projected as potential No. 1 overall picks. "There are people who are a cut above at the top of the draft," Milbury said.

The Islanders own four picks in the first two rounds, including three in the second. Even at No. 15 overall there are quality options to consider, including Zach Parise, a high-scoring college star at North Dakota who is the son of former Islander J.P. Parise and sleeper forward Andrei Kastsitsyn, a known epileptic, whose very gutsy, has tons of desire and could have a great upside.

NHL Awards Isles with late round Pick

The Islanders have been awarded an eighth round pick, 238th overall, as compensation for losing C Kip Miller as a group III unrestricted free agent during July 2002. Miller was signed to a 2 year deal by the Washington Capitals.

due to other compensatory picks given out by the NHL, the Isles three second round picks have been moved back. They will now select 48th, 53rd & 58th.
