| With the Islanders American Hockey
League affiliate in Capital District, based in Troy New York,
struggling to draw fans the Islanders made the decision to fold CDI in
1993 and signed an affiliation agreement with the International Hockey
League's Salt Lake Golden Eagles. This would be the beginning of an
era for the Islanders where they decided to split their prospects
between leagues as in 1993 they signed a deal to send a handful of
players to the AHL's Worcester Icecats. The
Islanders relationship would last only one season in Salt Lake. A
franchise that had been around for over 25 years, since 1969 spanning
through the old WHL and CHL, the Golden Eagles were sold by Larry
Miller, owner of the Utah Jazz, to a Detroit group for the price of $5
million (thus the origin of the Detroit Vipers). Miller said he was
losing too much money on the team. As part of the deal the Eagles home
arena, the Salt Palace, was torn down in favor of building a new
arena, the Delta Center. With the demise of the Eagles, the Islanders
signed on with the newly formed Denver Grizzlies, who were to play in
the McNichols Sports Arena in 1994-95. With a roster heavily populated
with Islander draft picks and free agent signings the Grizzlies, led
by Butch Goring behind the bench, went on to win the Turner Cup,
sweeping the Kansas City Blades 4 games to 0 in the finals. Oddly
enough, the Grizzlies were then forced to move back into the Delta
Center in 1995 due to the fact that the National Hockey League's
Quebec Nordiques were sold to a group in Colorado that made a deal for
them to play in McNichols Arena. At that point the Grizzlies changed
their name to the Utah Grizzlies. The change in venue didn't change
the on ice product and Goring, also serving as GM, made sure to bring
back most of his key pieces for 1995-96. In addition, many of the
Islanders prospects failed to graduate to the next level. The
Grizzlies went on to take their second straight Turner Cup
Championship in 1996 by defeating the Orlando Solar Bears in the
finals. In the following two years after the
1996 championship, the Islanders had decided to send less of their
prospects to the Grizzlies and the IHL because of the belief that the
IHL was more of a veteran league. More prospects were getting sent to
the Kentucky Thoroughblades of the AHL, a more true developmental
league. The Grizzlies began to decline, losing out in the second round
in 1997 and the first round in 1998. In the late 1990's the Islanders
minor league system was in a bit of disarray and as their affiliation
in Utah came to an end in 1999, they began to supply what little
prospects they had to the AHL's Lowell Lock Monsters. As for the
Grizzlies, Butch Goring left them in 1999 after not qualifying for the
playoffs to take over as coach of the New York Islanders. Another
former Islander great, Bob Bourne, took over for Goring in Utah. The
team remained in the IHL until the league folded in 2001. Luckily, the
franchise was expanded into the AHL starting with the 2001-02 season.
They remained there until 2005 when the Utah Grizzlies dropped down
into the East Coast Hockey League in 2005-06. |

Turner Cup Champions 1995
| The first year Denver Grizzlies finished the regular
season with a league leading 57 wins and 120 points. The International Hockey League had an odd playoff format in 1995 where
16 of 17 teams in the league qualified for the post season. The
Grizzlies cruised through the first three rounds dispersing of the
Minnesota Moose, Phoenix Roadrunners and the Milwaukee Admirals. In
fact they only lost 2 games en-route to the finals, both on the
road: one to Phoenix and one to Milwaukee. While Minnesota was an easy
victory, both Phoenix and Milwaukee had respectable records during the
season finishing with 96 and 98 points respectively. Then the odd
playoff quirk reared it's head. The Grizzlies faced the Kansas City
Blades, who finished in last place in the Central Division with 76
points and were the 16th best team to make the playoffs. The Blades
had a much more difficult trail to the finals having defeated the
Detroit Vipers, Peoria Rivermen and Kalamazoo Wings. Kansas City, an
affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, was led by Jan Caloun, Gary Emmons,
J.F. Quintin, Ken Hodge, Claudio Scremin, Dody Wood, Ilya Byakin and
Larry Dyck in goal. They also had young talent like Viktor Kozlov,
Mike Rathje and Shean Donovan. |
 |
Still, the Blades were no match for the
Grizzlies who were powered by rookie & league MVP goaltender Tommy
Salo who was just imported over to North America by the Islanders
after he led Sweden to a Gold Medal in the 1994 Olympics. Salo missed
a portion of the season with the Islanders but rejoined the Grizzlies
in the second round of the playoffs taking over for Jamie McClennan
who filled in just as good. Kip Miller led the team in scoring with
106 points during the regular season, good for 4th overall in the
league. In the playoffs he was named MVP contributing 15 goals and 29
points in 17 games. Also playing a big role in the Grizzlies
championship run was Chris Taylor, Jeff Madill, Andrei Vasilyev,
Niklas Andersson, Milan Tichy, Andy Brickley, Yan Kaminsky, Victor
Ignatjev and Terry Yake. The Grizzlies lifted the Turner Cup on June
1, 1995.
This
is a great recap of the 1994-95 season
Turner Cup Champions 1996
The Grizzlies moved to another arena and changed
their name to Utah Grizzlies for the 1995-96 season. They didn't equal
their 120 point season of 1994-95 but still reached elite status with
49 wins and 102 points, good for fourth overall in the IHL. Looking to
defend their championship, the Grizzlies faced the Orlando Solar Bears
in the 1996 finals. The Solar Bears, who finished third in the IHL
with 52 wins and 110 points, were predominantly an independent
organization, but they did have a few players loaned to them from the
Dallas Stars. Orlando was led by Craig Fisher, Mark Beaufait, Dave
Barr, Todd Richards, Alfie Turcotte, Duane Joyce, Craig Duncanson,
Mark Ferner, former New York Islander Hubie McDonough and goaltender
Allan Bester. But just as one year earlier with Kansas City the Solar
Bears could not crack the goaltending of Tommy Salo, who was named
Playoff MVP. They didn't have the scoring of Kip Miller to fall on
though as he signed before the season started with the Chicago
Blackhawks. Instead the Grizzlies relied on late season acquisitions
of Viktor Gordiuk and Scott Arniel. Also playing major roles were
Brett Lievers, Andy Brickley, Jason Herter, Bob Beers, Chris Taylor,
Victor Ignatjev, former Capital District Islander Jeff Sharples and
Andrei Vasilyev who scored 12 goals in the playoffs.
