| When the Central Hockey League folded
after the 1983-84 season, the Islanders primary affiliate in
Indianapolis decided to move to the International Hockey League. The
Islanders kept an affiliation with the Checkers, but instead moved
their primary farm system to the American Hockey League's Springfield
Indians. The Islanders initially signed a two year deal with the
Indians after Springfield had severed ties with the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Indians already had a deep tradition and long history that dated
back to the old IAHL back during their founding year of 1935. Owner
Peter R. Cooney named Bruce Landon general manager of the Indians when he bought the team in 1982 and he remained in that position
throughout the Islanders tenure there which basically allowed
Islanders general manager Bill Torrey to focus on his NHL duties.
During the first three years from 1984 to 1987 the Islanders shared
the Indians with the Minnesota North Stars. In 1987 the North Stars
left and the Indians became pretty much exclusive to the
Islanders.
In a case of irony, the Springfield Indians were
coached by former Islander Lorne Henning, who was not in the Islanders
organization at the time, but with the North Stars. Later, he would go
on to coach in Minnesota. Henning got the Indians into the playoffs in
his only year as coach but the team lost out in the first round in
1985. For the next 4 seasons, from 1986 to 1989 the Indians failed to
qualify for the post season. This almost mirrored what was going on up
with the Islanders in the NHL as during the late 80's they started on
a decline of their own. Still, the Islanders managed to develop some
pretty good young players in Springfield. Patience became a virtue
shortly after Jim Roberts was named coach in 1988. As mentioned, the
team missed the playoffs in 1989, but in 1990 they went all the way to
the Calder Cup finals and won it all. Following that championship
season, the Islanders contract with Springfield was up and the Indians
signed on as a new affiliate with the NHL's Hartford Whalers. So the
Islanders were forced to move elsewhere after 6 years in Springfield.
The following season the "baby Islanders" or Capital
District Islanders were born. As for the
Indians, their championship in 1990 was the fifth in franchise
history. They won three straight Calder Cups from 1959 to 1962 as a
minor league affiliate of the New York Rangers. One of their star
players was former Islander assistant coach and junior coach Brian
Kilrea. In 1975 they won their fourth title as an affiliate of the Los
Angeles Kings and were coached by original Islander Ron Stewart.
Interestingly, the Indians won their sixth Calder Cup in 1991 ad Jim
Roberts remained and led the Whalers prospects to a second straight
title. After 58 years as the Indians, Springfield was sold to original
Islander owner Roy Boe and he moved them to Worcester, named them the
Icecats, and signed a partial affiliation with the Islanders.
Springfield got a new team, the Falcons, and shared an affiliation between Hartford and
Winnipeg, two locations no longer in the NHL. They have since been
affiliated with Phoenix and Tampa Bay. |

Calder Cup Champions 1990
The Springfield Indians finished the 1989-90 season
with a 38-38-4 record, good for 80 points in the American Hockey
League. In the Islanders six year affiliation with the Indians this
turned out to be their best season, a .500 record. Entering the
playoffs nobody expected the Indians to do much. In their first round
series, against the Cape Breton Oilers - affiliate of the Edmonton
Oilers, Springfield lost game 1 but rebounded with an overtime win in
game 2 just 4 minutes in. Things took off from there as the Indians
took the next two games at home to take a 3 games to 1 lead.
Springfield didn't have home ice advantage throughout the playoffs and
going into round two had to travel to Sherbrooke to take on the
Canadiens, affiliate of, of course, the Montreal Canadiens. Once
again Springfield was able to split the set in Sherbrooke and won both
games at home to take a commanding 3 games to 1 lead. Sherbrooke
forced a game 6 back in Springfield where the Indians ended the series
with a 5-4 win scoring the winning goal just over 7 minutes into
overtime.
In the Calder Cup finals Springfield traveled to
take on the Rochester Americans, affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres. The
American finished with the second best record in 1989-90, achieving 95
points and first place in their division. But the Indians came into
the series very confident, as they had just knocked off the #1 team in
the AHL, Sherbrooke who finished the regular season with 102 points.
The Americans had a lot of fire power as they were led by Mike
Donnelly, Donald Audette, Jody Gage, Francois Guay, Don McSween, Steve
Ludzik, Dale DeGray and Ray Sheppard, who joined Rochester for the
playoff push. Audette, Gage and Donnelly all scored over 40 goals
during the regular season. The Springfield Indians jumped out to a
commanding lead by winning both the first two games of the finals in
Rochester. They returned home looking to close out the series, but
Rochester wasn't there for nothing and bounced back with two road wins
of their own to tie the series at two game apiece. Game 5 in Rochester
really proved to be a deciding factor in the series and the Indians
pulled out the 2-1 win just over 10 minutes into overtime. Returning
home to Springfield, the Indians were one win away from a total
playoff upset and taking home the title. Five days later, on May 18,
1990 at the Springfield Civic Center, the Indians won a another
dramatic game 4-3 with the winner coming just 23 seconds into
overtime. Springfield wins the Calder Cup Championship 4 games to 2
over the Rochester Americans.

One of the biggest playoff heroes for the Indians
was a player brought in midway during the 1989-90 season from the
Johnstown Chiefs of the East Coast Hockey League. Greg Parks, whose
performance would earn him a contract with the Islanders, recorded 9
goals and 22 points in 18 playoff games. Paul Gagne, who was acquired
from the Toronto Maple Leafs by the Islanders in December of 1989, led
the Indians with 10 playoff goals and 16 points. The Islanders had
high hopes for defenseman Wayne McBean, who was acquired from Los
Angeles in February of 1989. He contributed 15 points to Springfield's
run in 1990. Islander draft picks Tom Fitzgerald, Rob DiMaio, Bill
Berg and playoff MVP goaltender Jeff Hackett played big roles in
winning the championship. Not to be forgotten for their contributions
during playoff time are Guy Rouleau, Shawn Evans, Derek Laxdal, Rod
Dallman and Marc Bergevin, who was allowed to play because he only got
into 18 games with the Islanders in the NHL that season.
