Isles Info:
29 year old Salficky is
considered by Islanders European scout Anders Kallur to be the
best goaltender in Czechoslovakia right now. The Islanders needed
immediate help in goal and Salficky will be given every chance to make
the team in 2000-01. The Islanders hope that if Salficky turns out even
close to Flyers G Roman Cechmanek, they'll be in good shape.
Salficky has been the backup goaltender for each of the last two Czech
World Championship teams. Was suppose to be the Czechs number one in
goal for the tournament this year, but was replaced at the last minute
by former Islander draft pick Milan Hnlicka. Has a bit of a cocky
attitude and was the top goaltender in the Czech extraleague last year.
Signed a one year one
way contract with the Islanders on July 6, 2001.
2001-02 Update:
Came over to join the
Islanders in training camp, but depth played a large
part in why he never really had a chance to make the
team. The Islanders signed Garth Snow as a free agent
shortly after signing Salficky. Before the season began
the Isles acquired Chris Osgood in the waiver draft.
With Rick DiPietro slated to get the brunt of the work
in Bridgeport, Salficky was the odd man out. After
playing solidly in 4 games for the Sound Tigers,
Salficky found himself on the bench as a backup. He
asked Mike Milbury to get more ice time for him or he
would return to the Czech Republic. Milbury said he'd
try but eventually Dusan was allowed to return to his
home land.
