Select G Kevin Poulin 126th Overall |
| June 20,
2008:
G Kevin Poulin
Born: April 12, 1990, Montreal, Que.
2007-08: Victoriaville (QMJHL)
Catches: Left
CSS: 7th among NA goaltenders
|
- His most memorable hockey moment was
representing
Canada
at the 2007 Ivan Hlinka Memorial.
- He got his start in hockey at the age
of five on his backyard rink and played most of his minor hockey in
Montreal
and Longueuil.
Red Line: Rank 8th among goaltenders
Poulin started the season as a sure-fire first-rounder based on his
great physical gifts and performance as an underager last year. But he was
a perplexing mystery to scouts all season as he ricocheted back and forth,
alternating between the occasional utterly dominant performance we all
expected to see more regularly and the many nights when it appeared he
couldn't stop a beach ball. He has great size (6-2/208) and superb
athleticism with flexibility. His movements are fast and crisp and he's
big enough to cover the top corners in the butterfly. But he's shown a
propensity to lose his angles, has a very shaky catching hand and his
mental toughness has become a real question mark. Finished up-and-down
season of mediocrity with a series of brutal playoff performances versus
Halifax' admittedly powerful lineup of sharpshooters.

Kevin Poulin
Goaltending gives Victoriaville edge
Matthew Wuest, Halifax Daily News (November 2, 2007)
If you looked at everything other than the final score, you'd have to assume the Halifax Mooseheads were easy winners last night.
But the only thing they earned by dominating in shots (48-19), dangerous shots (19-5) and time of possession was their third shootout loss in four games, a tough 3-2 setback to the Victoriaville Tigres at the Halifax Metro Centre.
The sensational goaltending of Kevin Poulin was the difference. Poulin led the Tigres to an upset victory with a 46-save performance, stymieing Ryan Hillier and Jakub Voracek in the shootout.
"It's pretty annoying and we can't keep giving away points like that, especially to teams like Victoriaville," Mooseheads defenceman Stephen Lund said. "We know we're the better team and we know we should walk away with two points, easily."
The Mooseheads (11-3-0-3) deserved a better fate against the Tigres (10-9), carrying the play and allowing just seven shots in the first and third periods combined. But the opportunistic Tigres capitalized whenever the Mooseheads lapsed.
Charlottetown native Travis McIsaac netted both Victoriaville goals on odd- man chances, including the game-tying goal just 6:09 into the third. McIsaac also scored the shootout winner.
Poulin, a 17-year-old who is eligible for the NHL entry draft at the end of this season, took care of the rest, even though the gifted Mooseheads posted a season-high shots-on-goal total.
He made one of the nicest saves this season at the Metro Centre on Hillier in the second, getting his toe on a shot from a few feet out.
"He absolutely robbed me at the side of the net," said Hillier, who scored in the first. "I don't know too many goalies in this league who can stop that. He showed a lot of poise for a 17-year-old."
Tigres head coach Martin Bernard called the Mooseheads "the best team I've seen since the beginning of the year," but showered Poulin with praise for his big-game ability.
"He always plays a good game in the big buildings like Halifax and Quebec (City)," he said. "It's not easy for a 17-year-old goalie to play against Voracek, (Logan) MacMillan and Hillier. It's a big offence and he played a great game for us."
Mooseheads goaltender Pier-Olivier Pelletier stopped 17 of 19 shots in regulation and overtime, but allowed shootout goals to Keven Veilleux, on a nice deke, and McIsaac, on an odd bounce.
