Isles select D Jaroslav Mrazek 179th

The Islanders now begin to focus on defense with selection Jaroslav Mrazek from Sparta Praha of the Czech Republic. Mrazek has very good size at 6-3 and 200lbs. The Islanders scouts like his mentality in the defensive zone stating that he goes into the corners like a bull in a china shop. They believe he already has very good skills, is a good skater and has good straight away speed. He takes his game very seriously and sometimes gets on himself too much. But that is a good sign.

- Mrazek played for the Czech Republic at the 2004 WJC's and finished a +2. He will most likely play for Sparta Praha in the ExtraLeague elite division in 2004-05.

- Mrazek also played for the Czech Republic in the 2003 Under 18 Junior World Cup.

- Was ranked 85 among European skaters on CSB's final ranking. Midterm ranking by CSB was 58.

Isles Scouts: "He's a big strong kid who loves to practice and is ready to play at the top level in his country," said Isles' Czech scout Karel Pavlik. "Sometimes, he's a bit rough on himself, but that's good. He takes hockey very seriously."

Said European scout Ryan Jankowski: "He missed part of the season with a shoulder injury, which seemed to weigh on his game in the second half. He struggled then, but he'll be back to full form this season."

"He has the ability to handle the puck and is a very good straight ahead skater," said Jankowski. "Plus, he's really solid in his own zone. He goes into the corner with a bull-in-the-china shop mentality. He has a very solid foundation to work with at this point in his development."

Update: June 30, 2004
Toronto St. Michael's Majors Select Mrazek in Import Draft

With their second pick (74th overall), the Majors grabbed Jaroslav Mrazek, a defenceman from the Czech Republic. The 6'3", 198-pound blueliner played for the Sparta Juniors last season. In 37 games, he obtained 9 points. He was recently selected in the 6th Round of the NHL Draft by the New York Islanders. He was born on January 14th, 1986. (note - he was the third to last pick selected).

Now Mrazek has the choice of staying in the Czech Republic for 2004-05 with Sparta Praha and their development junior squad or coming over to North America and playing in the CHL.

Czech 2004 prospects: season review
Written by Robert Neuhauser on 05/28/2004

Jaroslav Mrazek's stock took a dive in comparison to where it was one year ago. Regarded as probably the best Czech 2004 eligible defenseman only behind Ladislav Smid, Mrazek backed down from his strong conservative defensive play, which brought him considerable success in the previous two seasons. Mrazek tried to develop an offensive side to his solid defensive savvy, but tried to do too much and was overwhelmed with the puck at times. Mrazek rushed the puck often, but thanks to his lack of the elite puckhandling skills he didn't manage to win a large amount of one-on-one battles, which resulted into numerous turnovers. Mrazek didn't seem to know what his role on the ice is especially in the first half of the season, leaving the scouts with a question what happened to the big, reliable Mrazek from the previous season. His offensive raids often finished just in the corner and he didn't unleash his booming slapper so often as in the previous season. However, as the season progressed, Mrazek showed a sign of returning to his usual reliable style and he began to use his imposing frame more often. When he kept the things simple, he showed that he still can play good games and be a strong force in the back rows. Late in the season he could celebrate his senior Extraleague debut and was practicing with the Sparta senior team till the season reached its end. He traveled with the team to all playoff games, but with the exception of one game he was either a healthy scratch or the seventh defenseman, not playing at all.

Jaroslav Mrazek battled flu at the 2003 World Junior Cup, which resulted into a not very impressive showing on the bronze-medal winning Czech Under-18 team. As a core member of the Czech junior national team of the 1986 borns he didn't have much to prove in the November Four Nations tournament and was promoted to the Under-19 team instead. There he registered an above-average showing even against older opposition and was one of the best defensemen of the team, which played in a three-game series against the Under-19 team of Finland. He missed the Christmas evaluation camp of the Under-18 team, but performed at the Five Nations Tournament of the Under-18 teams in Finland and was a lock to make the Under-18 WJC team. Mrazek wasn't a dominant force in Minsk, Belarus, but he filled his role conscientiously and didn't make any glaring mistakes. Pegged as an early-rounder last year, expect Mrazek to slip to the late rounds.
