Ever wonder what your
favorite athlete is like off the ice, off the field or
off the court? The time has come to get to know your
Knights! This week I got to sit down and spend some time
with Tyrell Mason of the Men's Hockey Team:
Q) Why did you get involved in hockey?

Cornell men's icers
end road trip with loss, tie
By Chris Mascaro, Cornell Daily Sun
February 13, 2006
"[The game] was a
pretty weak effort," said senior assistant captain
Jon Gleed. "We really didn't come ready to match
their intensity. They seemed to be more ready to play
than we did."
As Gleed noted,
Clarkson came out strong right from the get-go, as the
squad opened the scoring on Friday night just under four
minutes into the contest, when freshman defender Tyrell
Mason netted his first career goal on his classmate
Shea Guthrie's 16th assist of the season. On the play,
Mason corralled a rebound and slid the puck just inside
the left post past McKee.
"I just threw the
puck on net and was fortunate enough to go in,"
Mason said. "The goalie didn't see it, I'm sure,
because it wasn't that hard of a shot. It feels great,
against Cornell especially."
The Golden Knights
capitalized on another solid scoring chance just under
10 minutes later on a power play, when Guthrie skated
down McKee's left side, sidestepped freshman defender
Jared Seminoff, and ripped a shot from the right circle
that rang off the post. Despite the miss, Clarkson
senior assistant captain Jeff Genovy, who was trailing
the play, was able to knock the rebound into a wide-open
net. The score came while sophomore Raymond Sawada was
serving an obstruction-interference infraction.
The goal, which was
assisted by Guthrie and defender Michael Grenzy, was
Genovy's eighth of the season and proved to be the
game-winner.
KNIGHTS
RETURN to FORM with 3-1 WIN OVER THIRD-RANKED CORNELL
Tyrell Mason records first career goal
February 10, 2006
Freshman defenseman Tyrell
Mason (Dawson Creek, BC) opened the scoring at 3:54
on Clarkson’s first shot of the game. Mason’s shot
from the point found its way through traffic in front
for his first collegiate goal. Junior defenseman Michael
Grenzy (Lockport, NY) and freshman Shea Guthrie
(Carleton Place, ONT) assisted. The Knights made it 2-0
at 13:17 with a power-play tally from senior Jeff
Genovy (Kalamazoo, MI). With less than 30 seconds
remaining in the Knights’ only man-advantage
opportunity of the opening stanza, Guthrie took a shot
from the bottom of the right circle that deflected off
the crossbar out to Genovy in the slot, where he lifted
in his eighth goal of the year. Grenzy and Guthrie
picked up their second assists. Clarkson, which had only
five shots in the period, killed off three Cornell power
plays.

FRESHMAN YEAR
(2005-06)—Steady rookie on the Knights’ young

Golden Knights to have played in all 36 games ...

team in plus/minus with a +10 ... Tallied first
collegiate goal with the Knights’ opening score in 3-1
win over Cornell (2/10) ... Had three assists in the
ECACHL playoffs ... Set up game-winning goal in 2-1
victory over Princeton in game 1 of the first-round
series (3/3) at Cheel Arena.
HEAD COACH GEORGE
ROLL SAYS—"Tyrell
should make a big impact on our power play. He is a big,
mobile defenseman who moves the puck well and has good
vision on the ice. We expect good things from
Tyrell."
Entering 2006-07:
"Game-in and game-out, Tyrell as a freshman last
season was outstanding. He was a top guy on our team in
plus/minus. He is not a guy who will wow you and have
you saying after that game "that he played
great."After you watch the tape, however, you will
see the type of impact he had. Tyrell does all the
simple, little things that lead to success. He makes the
right decisions, moves the puck well and takes care of
his own end. As he gains more confidence, puts on some
weight and gets stronger, he will be able to do more
offensively."

November 23, 2004
Four promising
student-athletes have committed during the early signing
period to attend Clarkson University and play hockey for
the Golden Knights next season. Clarkson head coach
George Roll, associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant
coach Jean-Francois Houle have recruited another
talented class, consisting of three forwards and one
defenseman.
A
native of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Mason is a
6-2, 180-pound defenseman for the Salmon Arm
Silverbacks. Through the first 23 games of the British
Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCHL) season, Mason was
Salmon Arm's leading scorer from the blueline with 25
points, including a team-high 22 assists. He was named
to the BCHL All-Rookie team last season after scoring 36
points (7-29) in 59 games.
"Tyrell
has good size, competes hard and is a very good skating
defenseman," says Drechsel. "He moves the puck
well, has good vision and makes an excellent first pass.
He should be a key contributor on our power play. Tyrell
has a lot of upside and will more than likely be
selected in the 2005 NHL Draft."
The
Islanders third round pick in 2005, W Shea Guthrie, was
also recruited by Clarkson.
