| In 1998 the Islanders decided to move their primary
minor league affiliation to the American Hockey League expansion
Lowell Lock Monsters. The AHL has always been considered more of a
developmental league and the Islanders previous affiliation, the Utah
Grizzlies, were in a league filled with mostly veterans. Since 1994,
while the Islanders were enjoying success in Utah, they also had
secondary affiliations with the expansion Worcester Icecats for two
years, and then the expansion Kentucky Thoroughblades in 1996. During
those years the Islanders sent the very few promising young prospects
they had to these AHL locations for seasoning. The roles switched in
1998 and the Islanders sent a few of their veteran free agent signings
to the Utah Grizzlies until 1999. It was that season of 1998-99 that
the Islander began an affiliation in Lowell that would last three
years. The first year the Islanders sent a full roster to the
Monsters but in 1999-00 they began to spread their prospects around
different locations. While the Islanders shared the Lock Monsters with
the Los Angeles Kings, they dispatched players to the AHL's
Springfield Falcons and the IHL's Chicago Wolves. To be honest, this was a pretty lean era
for the Islanders in the prospect department. It also coincided with
the Islanders playoff draught of 7 years without a playoff berth. Most
of the Islanders first round draft picks usually made the NHL roster
because the team lacked depth. Most notable to make appearances for
the Lock Monsters were Zdeno Chara, Branislav Mezei, Roberto Luongo,
Juraj Kolnik, Jason Krog and Sean Haggerty. As far as coaches, the
team was coached during their first year of 1998-99 by former Lake
Superior State University and East Coast Hockey League coach Frank
Anzalone. He was followed by former Springfield Indian Bruce Boudreau,
who had also coached throughout the IHL and ECHL, for the next
two years. In 2001 the Islanders contract with the Lowell Lock
Monsters had come to an end. That same year original Islanders owner
Roy Boe teamed up once again with his former team and bought an AHL
expansion franchise to play in Bridgeport Connecticut. That team is
called the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and has been the Islanders primary
affiliate up to the present day. As for the Lock Monsters, they signed
an affiliation with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2001 and have remained
with them ever since. Unfortunately the Lock Monsters owner Elkin
McCallum has put them up for sale in 2005 and their future in Lowell
is in doubt. |

game over .500 and 81 points. The playoff format called for them to
face the fourth best team in the division, which were the Saint John
Flames, farm team of the Calgary Flames. The Lock Monsters proved to
be absolutely no match for the Flames who finished the regular season
10 points behind Lowell. Powered by none other than current Islander
killer Martin St. Louis and with Jean-Sebastien Giguere in goal, the
Flames swept the Lock Monsters in a best of 5 series. Vladimir Orszagh
was the best Lock Monster scoring twice and contributing 4 points in
three games. As for Saint John, they were swept in the second round by
the Fredericton Canadiens.
Calder Cup playoffs 2000
The Lock Monsters dropped in 2000 and finished 3
games under .500 with 77 points. Yet this playoff would turn out to be
their best during the Islanders tenure in Lowell. In the first round
the Lock Monsters got a chance to extract some revenge against the
Saint John Flames who finished the regular season only 3 points ahead
of Lowell. They did it in same fashion, sweeping the Flames in three
straight. It may have been made easier by the fact that St. Louis was
called up to the Calgary Flames and spent most of the season there. In
goal, Giguere was still with the Flames and the Lock Monsters had
their way with him.
The success the Lowell team found in the first round
totally dissipated in the second round when they met up with the
Providence Bruins. The Bruins finished the regular season worst in
their division, 5 games under .500, but only 2 points behind Lowell.
The Lock Monsters were swept in four straight by the Bruins who were
manned with future Sound Tigers Brandon Smith and Eric Manlow. In
goal, John Grahame stonewalled the Lock Monsters allowing only 9 goals
in four games. Once again, Vladimir Orszagh was among the few best of
the Lowell players recording 3 goals and 6 points in 7 playoff games.
Roberto Luongo saw the brunt of the action in goal for the Lock
Monsters. As for Providence they lost in 7 games in the third round to
the eventual Calder Cup champion Hartford Wolf Pack. One interesting
twist in this series was the fact that halfway through the season
Islanders general manager Mike Milbury sent Jason Krog to the Providence Bruins,
where he contributed to defeating Lowell in the playoffs. Milbury
received some criticism in December of 2000 when he pulled Krog,
Mathieu Biron, Juraj Kolnik and Petr Mika out of Lowell for a lack of
playing time and sent them to the Springfield Falcons.
Calder Cup Playoffs 2001
In 2001 the Lowell Lock Monsters finished the
regular season fourth place in their division with 80 points and a
.500 record. In the first round they faced the league leading
Worcester Icecats who finished the regular season with 108 points.
Lowell managed to win game three at home by a 4-0 score but went on to
lose the series 3 games to one. Perhaps the best player for Worcester,
affiliate of the St. Louis Blues, was future Islander Justin Papineau,
who scored 7 goals in 11 playoff games in 2001. Worcester shut down
Lowell with the help of Eric Boguniecki and Dwayne Roloson in net.
Marko Tuomainen, a free agent signing for the Islanders in 2000
recorded 6 points in four playoff games for the Lock Monsters who were
without many Islander prospects because of Milbury's move in December
of 2000(mentioned above).
Miscellaneous Notes
 |
The Islanders also agreed to send 3-6 players to the
International Hockey League's Chicago Wolves during the 1999-00 and
2000-01 seasons. The general manager of the Wolves is former Islanders
1988 first round draft pick Kevin Cheveldayoff and he managed to work out
the deal with the Islanders. That is how Islanders 2000 first overall
pick goaltender Rick DiPietro found himself beginning his professional
career in Chicago with the Wolves in 2000-01. He played in 14 games
with Chicago that season before getting the call to Long Island.
The Chicago Wolves won the Turner Cup in 2000
with the help of Islander free agent signings Dallas Eakins,
Niklas Andersson, Chris Ferraro and Daniel Lacroix.
