2005-06 Update: April
1, 2006 Playoff Update: Shea Guthrie played in all
four of Clarkson's playoff games in early March. In the
ECACHL playoffs first round best of three Clarkson
defeated Princeton 2-1 on March 3rd and 5-0 on March 4th
both at the Cheel Center. Clarkson Advanced to the
ECACHL Quarterfinals, another best of three series
against Cornell. This was the third year in a row that
Clarkson faced Cornell in the playoffs. Guthrie scored a
goal, his 9th of the season, in Game 1 but Clarkson
still lost 4-3 at 11:30 of double overtime. Here is a
description of Guthrie's goal:
Just 1:00 into the
second frame, Clarkson evened the score 1-1 as freshman Shea
Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) knocked in a rebound
in front off a shot by Zalewski while crashing the net
for his ninth goal of the year. Weller started the play
by springing his linemates with a pass from the redline.
In Game 2, Clarkson
was eliminated from the ECACHL playoffs losing another
heartbreaking double overtime game. Cornell won 3-2 with
a goal at 18:30 of the double session. Both games were
played in Ithaca, NY. On March 16th Guthrie was named to
the ECAC's All-Rookie Team. He finished the season tied
for fifth on Clarkson in scoring.
March
1, 2006 Update - Shea Guthrie went 1-2-3 in 5 games
played during the month of February. Still 4th on
Clarkson in scoring with 25 points. His goal in February
came on the 27th when he broke a 2-2 tie in the second
period at the Cheel Center and defeated Yale 3-2. He
later left the game with a shoulder injury that was
reported to keep him out of the lineup for 2-3 weeks. He
missed the last three games of February with the
shoulder injury....Most of his points came in October
and November. Guthrie had 17 points on December 1, 2005
and only recorded 9 points up until March 1, 2006. He's
a -4 on the season.
February 1, 2006 Update - Shea Guthrie went 1-4-5 in
8 games played during the month of January. He's now 4th
on Clarkson in scoring with 22 points. In the ECAC
Guthrie is the third leading Freshman scorer behind
Quinnipiac's duo of Brian Leitch and David Marshall.
He's dropped to 9th in scoring among freshman in the
nation. His only goal in January came on the 27th when
he broke a 2-2 tie in the third period at the Cheel
Center and defeated the visiting St. Lawrence 3-2.
January 1, 2006
Update: Clarkson only played 4 games during the month of
December and Guthrie only saw action in 2 of them. On
December 9, 2005 he was ejected from a game at Bowling
Green for hitting from behind in the first period.
Clarkson went on to win the game 6-4. He may have been
suspended the next game because he didn't suit up for
Clarkson's 2-1 loss December 10, 2005 at Miami
University. Guthrie also didn't play against Bemidji
State in the opening round of the Sheraton TD BankNorth
Catamount Cup at the University of Vermont on December
30, 2005. Clarkson won in a shootout after the team's
were tied 3-3 after overtime. In the Sheraton TD
BankNorth Catamount Cup championship game vs. Vermont
Guthrie returned to action but the Golden Knights lost
3-0. He's still third on the team in scoring with 17
points. He is currently second in the entire ECAC among
rookies/freshman in scoring, behind Quinnipiac's David
Marshall who has 19 points in 19 games. With a good year
in 2006 Guthrie could be a candidate for Team USA at the
2007 World Junior Championship's in Sweden.
December
1, 2005 - Shea Guthrie is the leading freshman
scorer in the ECACHL, both overall and in conference
play, and fifth leading rookie scorer nationally with 17
overall points (6-11) and nine league points (4-5). He
paces the Knights’ offense, which is sixth in the
nation averaging 3.79 goals per game. Guthrie went 4-5-9
in 7 games played for Clarkson during the month of
November. Guthrie is
developing into a pretty nice prospect for the
Islanders.
November 1, 2005 - Shea
Guthrie went 2-6-8 in 6 games played during the month of
October. He also recorded 4 assists in 2 exhibition
games (3 assists vs. the USA Under-18 Team on 10/22/05

Shea Guthrie no longer an
unknown
by DJ Powers - hockeysfuture - Mar. 7, 2006 - excerpt - click

In the summer of 2005,
Guthrie received perhaps the greatest birthday gift of
all and one he’ll never forget.
“I was drafted by
the New York Islanders on my birthday.” said the
clearly excited Guthrie. ”My first reaction was
overwhelming joy. I wasn’t expecting to be drafted by
New York. It didn’t matter to me who I was drafted by.
I was very happy to be selected by the Islanders. It’s
been the best news of my life to date and it happened to
just be on my birthday too. So it was a pretty good day.
I didn’t go to the draft in Ottawa. I just stayed home
and found out about it on my computer.”
While he did not
attend the Islanders prospects camp last summer, Guthrie
says he will attend this summer’s camp.
Like every other
amateur player, Guthrie has an NHL player that he not
only looks up to but also tries to pattern his game
after. His is a member of the Ottawa Senators and a
player that he has actually played with in the past.
“My favorite player
is Mike Fisher. I played with him a bit in the summer.
He is such a humble guy. On the ice he is such a
competitor and he’s real good offensively and
defensively. I think his game would be the one that I
would like to model the most, but obviously I have a
long way to go. I’d like to be able to model his speed
and just how good his hands are, but at the same time
how defensive, reliable, and responsible he is.”
Guthrie, who hails
from Carlton Place near Kanata, was drafted by the
OHL’s Ottawa 67s and had the opportunity to play
there, but opted for the college route. It was a
decision he’s been content with and has no regrets
about.
“The thought of
playing in the CHL definitely crossed my mind, but I was
pretty much set on college. Once I went to prep school,
I was content with the idea that I would be going to a
college, if I could do it. As of right now, I don’t
have any regrets and I just love college.”
Guthrie Propels,
Leggio Preserves Saints Slaying As CU Knights Win 3-2
by Chris Fohlin - clarksonintegrator.com - Jan. 30,
2006
David Leggio had
twenty-nine saves in the win against cross-town rival
St. Lawrence, and the final score of the game was 3-2.
The three goals for the Knights came from three
different players: Michael Grenzy, Jon Marshall, and
Shea Guthrie. Clarkson broke a four-game losing streak
in their first home game of the new year in front of
the third largest crowd in Cheel Arena's history.
The Clarkson University
men's hockey team had not met with St. Lawrence in
back-to-back games in the 81-year history of the
rivalry. That all changed with the first game of a
home-and-home series at Cheel Arena Friday night. In
front of a crowd of 3,914-third largest in Cheel Arena
history-sophomore David Leggio put on a stellar
performance in net, recording twenty-nine saves. On
the offensive side, freshman Shea Guthrie was welcomed
to the rivalry with open arms upon his game-winning
tally in the third period.
Freshman Philipe Paquet
began the third period with the only penalty of the
stanza, a two-minute minor for high sticking. The
Saints made the ensuing power play count. Trevelyan
received a pass from Zack Miskovic and put the puck
through the crease past Leggio to the left side.
Waiting with great anticipation, Mike Zbriger made
sure to convert, giving him his second goal of the
night. Clarkson was not about to head to Appleton
Arena following a tie, and Guthrie made sure of that.
Just over four minutes later, Guthrie took the puck
down ice and behind the Saints' goal where he took a
crushing hit from two St. Lawrence players. Guthrie
collected both himself and the puck, put a shot on
Pesony that was saved and put his own rebound home for
his seventh goal of the season. Sophomores Zalewski
and Shawn Weller both assisted on the play which
developed following a three-on-two situation coming
into St. Lawrence's end.
The remaining minutes of regulation belonged to Leggio,
as he made save after spectacular save to preserve the
Clarkson lead and eventual victory. Soon after
Guthrie's go-ahead tally, Leggio made a tremendous
save on a wrap around attempt, part of St. Lawrence's
fierce effort at tying the contest. At the other end
of the ice, Pesony did just as much to keep St.
Lawrence within a goal, thwarting multiple prime
Knight opportunities. Leggio made huge point-blank
saves with six minutes remaining and just under three
minutes to play. With 1:41 on the clock, the Saints
sent a pass to the left side looking for another
weak-side goal. Leggio shifted to his right just in
time to make an impressive leg save, deflecting
Charlie Giffin's shot wide left. The crowd
collectively held its breath and exhaled with a
celebratory explosion of praise for the goalie from
Williamsville, New York. Both teams traded timeouts,
St. Lawrence requesting a break at the 1:12 mark, at
which point they removed Pesony from net in favor of
another skater, and the Knights stopping play with
just forty-six seconds to play. The final seconds
would not pass without tension as Leggio was called on
yet again, this time making a terrific glove save with
just eleven seconds on the clock. Leggio faced a shot
that was deflected in traffic and showed a sigh of
relief upon finding the puck in his glove, much to the
delight of the home crowd donning gold and green.
Inside College Hockey
Dec. 15, 2005 By Joe Gladziszewski
Bob Norton may be
disappointed to hear this. Most college hockey teams
aren’t scouring the prep school ranks to find
top-level talent these days. And Clarkson traditionally
pursues recruits from Ontario and Quebec to strengthen
its lineup. But the Golden Knights have found a special
offensive talent in Shea Guthrie, who
played at St. George’s School, a Division II prep
school located in Newport, R.I. where he played for Ryan
Mulhern. (Norton won’t be disappointed to hear that!)
Guthrie was selected in the third round of the NHL Entry
Draft with the 76th overall pick by the New York
Islanders. He has six goals and 11 assists in 15 games.
Guthrie Scores First
Collegiate Goal
Clarkson defeats Niagara University 5-2, 10/08/05
Clarkson struggled on the
power play in the early going with a 0-of-5 drought
before freshman Shea Guthrie (Carleton
Place, ONT) made the sixth Green and Gold
power play count. The heralded rookie connected off
assists from sophomore David Cayer (Longueuil,
QUE) and junior Nathan Beausoleil (Moose
Creek, ONT) for his first collegiate goal at 9:21.
October 28, 2005:
Freshman Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) took
a quick behind-the-net pass from Cayer in the slot and
fired in his second goal of the season at 12:48.
(excerpt from game recap of Clarkson's 5-2 victory over
Wayne State - Guthrie recorded a goal and 2 assists in
the win; 3 point night earned Guthrie second star of the
game)
October 31, 2005: One
of the top freshman offensive performers in the nation
through October, Guthrie, who was named ECACHL Rookie
of the Week, picked up five points (1-4) over the
weekend (vs. Wayne State), including two assists in each
game. Six of his eight (2-6) points this season have
come on the power play with two man-advantage markers
and four helpers with the extra skater.
November 4, 2005: Trailing
3-2 late in the third, sophomore David Cayer (Longueuil,
QUE) one-timed a shot from the right side of the net off
a pass from classmate, defenseman Grant Clitsome
(Gloucester, ONT) for his fourth goal of the year to tie
the contest at 14:05. Freshman Shea Guthrie
(Carleton Place, ONT) also assisted. The Golden
Knights had an excellent opportunity to take the
lead in the final seconds, but Guthrie was stopped from
point-blank range, forcing the game into overtime.
Instead, the Golden Knights skated to a 3-3 tie with
Rensselaer.
November 5, 2005: Clarkson
defeats Union College 4-1. Freshman Shea Guthrie
(Carleton Place, ONT) helped set up the Clarkson's first
goal on the power play for his team high eighth assist.
Guthrie iced the victory with an empty-net tally off an
assist from classmate Philippe Paquet (Quebec
City, QUE) with 1:56 remaining. November
11, 2005: Brown defeats Clarkson 4-3. With the
Golden Knights leading 1-0 early, Brown tied it at
14:01, but 72 seconds later freshman Shea Guthrie
(Carleton Place, ONT) scored on a breakaway to give
Clarkson the lead heading into the first-period break.
At 6:55 of the third, Guthrie netted his second of the
game and fifth of the season to make it 3-3. With 38
seconds left, however, Brown spoiled Clarkson’s
comeback bid and scored again on the power play to pick
up its third straight win over Clarkson. Guthrie was
named third star in the loss. November
12, 2005: Shea Guthrie records two assists in
Clarkson's 4-2 win over Yale University. He's named the
game's second star in the win. He leads the team with 10
assists. November

Clarkson's 4-3 win over the Princeton Tigers. November
25, 2005: Clarkson defeats Harvard 4-3. The

Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) put the Knights on top 2-0
with his sixth goal of the year, off an assist from
sophomore Shawn Weller (South Glens Falls, NY) at 13:58.
Guthrie is a regular on the Golden Knights top line.
January 27, 2006: Clarkson’s
leading freshman scorer and one of the top rookies in
the country, Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT)
broke a 2-2 tie midway through the third period with a
great individual effort. Guthrie took control of the
puck behind the St. Lawrence net and skated out front
after shaking off two hard hits along the boards by the
Saints and flipped in his seventh goal of the year for
the game-winner at 8:10. Sophomore linemates Shawn
Weller (South Glens Falls, NY) and Steve Zalewski
(New Hartford, NY) assisted on the goal, which gave the Green
and Gold their second win of the season over
St. Lawrence. The goal was Guthrie's first since
November 25, 2005. He was named the second star of the
game. Clarkson defeated St. Lawrence 3-2.
February 17, 2006: At
6:27 of the second period, 19 seconds after Clarkson
killed off Yale’s first power play of the game, the
Knights tied it up as Genovy knocked in a rebound off
junior defenseman Michael Grenzy’s (Lockport,
NY) shot from in close for his second goal. D’Alvise
recorded his second assist of the game and 15th of the
season. Freshman Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place,
ONT) put the Green and Gold on top with an unassisted
goal at 10:22 on a slap shot from the top of the right
circle for his eighth goal of the year. Clarkson
defeated Yale University at the Cheel Center 3-2.
Guthrie was named second star.

natural speed. He is extremely explosive but glides faster than most high
school players going all out. He is extremely agile and can stop and go
all day. He has a great set of hands, a nose for the net, and exceptional
passing skills. He is a competitor, a leader, and one of the classiest
players that I've ever seen. Shea is a great hockey player and an even
better person. He has really improved his defensive play over the last
three years and has a great understanding of the game. Whatever team
drafts Shea will be lucky to have him and he will do whatever it takes to
play in the NHL.”
Islanders' Scouting Staff:
"He's a complete package offensively. Shea can skate and possesses a
hard shot. We got him right where we thought he'd be. It was great value
for the pick. He's off to Clarkson next year after a very good prep career
in New England. He's from the Ottawa area, originally. We think this is
the type of player with the potential to excel in the new NHL."
* Rated eighth by
Hockey's Future among USHSE top 2005 Draft eligible
players.
* Guthrie is the first
freshman in the ECACHL to
be chosen in the 2005 draft and the second overall
player from the league to be picked. Guthrie is the
highest draft selection for Clarkson since current NHL
standout Erik Cole was chosen 71st in 1998 by Carolina.
* "Shea
will be an impact player for us. Because of the level he
was playing at, Division II prep school at St.
George’s, he wasn’t heavily recruited for the amount
of talent that he has. Given what we have seen of him,
Shea is going to be a dynamic player at the college
level. He skates extremely well, goes to the net hard
and has very good offensive ability. We will rely
heavily upon him as a freshman." - Clarkson's Head
Coach George Roll.
* Guthrie was drafted
by the Ottawa 67's in the OHL's 2003 Priority
Draft.

This Ontario
transplant was vital in St. George's back-to-back runs
to the NEPSIHA Division 2 finals. Before losing a 3-2
heartbreaker in the final to South Kent, the junior
forward had led his team to a third seed in the
tournament behind his 35 goals and 33 assists. For his
efforts, Guthrie received the Eberhart Division MVP and
was named to the NEPSIHA Division 2 First Team. For the
second straight year he was named an Eberhart first team
all-star. For his career, he has amassed 66 goals and 62
assists in 49 games. Guthrie is a draft pick of the
OHL's Ottawa 67's and has committed to play at Clarkson
after he graduates. The honor roll student is the
captain-elect for St. George's soccer team next season
and he also plays lacrosse.

The
third time was indeed the charm for St. George's School.
After coming up short in the previous two New England
Division II championship games, this time, it was the
Dragons turn to shine.
Bolstered by its superior speed and skill, St George's
won the 2005 New England Division II boys prep title
with a 6-0 victory over Hoosac School, which was making
its first-ever appearance in the title game.
Junior
David Vandenberg scored the only goal St. George's would
need just 1:59 into the contest, burying a pass from
Shea Guthrie.
A
Guthrie power play goal at 9:26 was the only scoring in
the final stanza. He recorded 2 goals and an assist on
the night.
St. George’s
Wins Div. II Crown
March 6, 2005
Salem, NH – St.
George’s, behind the shutout goaltending of Clem
McNally and four-point games from Shea Guthrie (2g,2a)
and Liam Chatterton (1g,3a) blanked Hoosac 6-0 to win
the Div. II prep school title this afternoon.
With the win, St.
George’s, which fell a goal short to South Kent in
last year’s prep title game, takes the school’s
first boy’s hockey championship.
Other big offensive
producers for St. George’s were defenseman Jon Lareau
(3a) and
David Vandenberg
(1g,1a). Paul Bertrand and Anthony Longo also had single
goals.
Four of St. George’s
six goals came on the power play, one one of those –
Guthrie’s third period goal – came on a 5-on-3.
 |
The game was never
really in doubt. St. George’s just was too skilled and
their puck movement far better than Hoosac, which
didn’t seem to have that much left in the tank after
yesterday’s upset of St. Mark’s.
Afterward, St. George’s head coach Rich Dempsey said,
“It was great after two years of being the bridesmaid
in the finals to finally win it all. It was great for
all the kids, but especially for the seniors who are the
heart and soul of the program.” |
“Today was
lopsided,” Dempsey added. “But we had a great game
yesterday against Worcester Academy. Our toughest
opponent was Brooks in the quarterfinals.
Asked about Guthrie,
Dempsey said, “When he’s playing well, he elevates
the level of play. He controls the tempo, especially on
the Olympic sheet here. He kills penalties. He’s had
an exceptional career. He was given every opportunity to
leave the school for the OHL or other programs, but he
believed in his teammates. Today was a tribute to
that.”
Guthie Leads St.
George’s Past Worcester Academy, 6-2
March 5, 2005
Salem, NH --- A
shorthanded goal by St. George’s senior center Shea
Guthrie at 8:57 of the second period broke open a 2-2
tie and sent St. George’s on to a 6-2 win over
Worcester Academy in the first New England Div. II prep
semifinal here today.
Several minutes after
Worcester’s Pat Brosnihan scored a huge goal to tie
the game at 2-2, driving to the net with a defender
draped over him, Worcester Academy found themselves with
a power play and a chance to take the lead.
Instead, Guthrie
struck, carrying the puck into the zone slowly, killing
time off the clock. The d-man kept giving him room,
though, and Guthrie turned him, almost in slow motion,
cut across the crease and lifted a backhander up under
the crossbar past Worcester goalie Ryan Comerford.
Later in the period,
St. George’s forward Nick Carro scored on a rebound to
make it 4-2. In the third, St. George’s added a pair,
the last an empty-netter by Guthrie.
Guthrie, excellent
throughout, finished with four points (2g,2a), Carro had
a three-point afternoon (1g,2a), and Mike Soros hadtwo
points (1g,1a).
For a 6-2 game, it was
an entertaining one, wide open and with plenty of
hitting and scoring opportunities. In addition, it was a
close game -- until Guthrie struck.

Four promising
student-athletes have committed during the early signing
period to attend Clarkson University and play hockey for
the Golden Knights next season. Clarkson head coach
George Roll, associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant
coach Jean-Francois Houle have recruited another
talented class, consisting of three forwards and one
defenseman.
Shea
Guthrie, a 6-0, 190-pound center from Carleton Place,
Ontario, is a standout center for St. George's Prep
School, who committed to Clarkson last season. Guthrie
received the Eberhart Division MVP and was named to the
NEPSIHA Division 2 First Team last year. In 2004, for
the second straight year he was named an Eberhart first
team all-star. For his career, entering this season, he
had amassed 66 goals and 62 assists in 49 games. Guthrie
is projected to be an early-round selection in the 2005
NHL Draft according to the NHL CSB Preliminary Rankings.
"Shea
may be one of the most complete players that we have
recruited since we have been here as a staff,"
remarked Drechsel. "He combines strong skating,
good skills, excellent hockey sense and a little bit of
grit to go with it. He has the potential to be a very
special hockey player at Clarkson."
The Islanders sixth
round pick in 2005, D Tyrell Mason, was also recruited
by Clarkson.
March 7, 2004
Salem, NH --
South Kent, behind goals from Pat Iannucci, Mike Pompa,
and Pat Melillo and a pair of assists from Tony Morrone,
won the Div. II title here this afternoon.
For South Kent it was
payback, as they were beaten by St. George’s, 5-2, in
the semis last season. In that game, Shea Guthrie had
three goals and an assist for St. George’s.
Today Guthrie, who was
closely watched by South Kent defenseman Stanislav Vylet,
and centers Ross Grubin, Melillo, and Pompa, was kept
off the board. South Kent did the same thing yesterday
with Josh Robertson. Keeping those two players to a
combined zero points was the major factor in South
Kent’s title-winning weekend, their first ever – and
last, too, as the school will be moving up to Div. I in
the fall.
March 6,
2004:
Salem, NH – A
third period goal by junior center Shea Guthrie lifted
St. George’s to a 3-2 win over #2 seed Pingree in the
second Div. II semifinal here today.
On the game-winner,
sophomore forward David VandenBerg picked up the puck
off a turnover, shot it, and the rebound came out to
Guthrie, who buried it just 1:27 into the period.
In the second period,
there was a lot of end-to-end action, good chances at
both ends of the ice, and some quality shots, but both
goalies were up to the task and the game moved on to the
third period, where Guthrie would score the game winner.
Guthrie (1g,2a)
figured in all three of St. George’s goals.
Proctor, Robertson,
Roll Past St. George's
Div. II Final - March 2, 2003
Proctor got two goals
and an assist from both junior Josh Robertson and
senior Phil Nazair in a 4-1 win over St.
George's. The win brought head coach Mike Walsh
his fourth straight Div. II title, three with Tilton,
and now one with Proctor.
Robertson who had six
points in yesterday's 8-1 win over Tilton, and added
three more today as his stock among the Div. I
recruiters here shot up another notch. Nazair had five
points yesterday in addition to his three today.
Robertson put Proctor
on the board first at the 6:52 mark of the first period,
firing a wrister from the top of the left faceoff circle
past St. George's goaltender Matt Dickson.
St. George's tied it
up on a wrister by sophomore Mike Soros at 12:03.
It would be the only goal St. George's would score in
the game.
Robertson struck again
less than a minute later, putting Proctor up 2-1 by
blasting home a powerplay goal from the left point.
Early in the second
period, Proctor goalie Chase Goodrich stoned St.
George's Shea Guthrie and then Soros to preserve
the one-goal lead.
With 2:37 remaining in
the second, Robertson, from the right faceoff circle,
hit Nazair with a perfect pass. Nazair, stationed at the
corner of the crease, simply redirected it home for a
3-1 lead.
In the third, Proctor
went up 4-1 when Nazair and Robertson crashed the net,
knocking it off its moorings and flattening Dickson.
Somehow, the puck went in, with Nazair getting credit
for the goal.
Guthrie Hat Trick
Paces St. Georges
Div. II Semi - March 1, 2003
Salem, NH --
Sophomore RW Shea Guthrie had a hat trick -- the
third goal was an empty netter -- and added an assist in
St. George's 5-2 win over South Kent here today.
Guthrie, a native of
Carleton Place, Ontario and his linemates, sophomore
center Shawn Cox of Orleans, Ontario (1g,3a), and
freshman LW Austin Mayer of Providence RI (1g)
figured in all of St. George's five goals. Junior
defenseman Chris Cruise added two assists.
South Kent broke out
to a 1-0 lead 2:46 into the first on a Chuck Speight wrister.
After a Guthrie goal tied it up, Speight added his
second goal of the game to put South Kent up, 2-1. With
46 seconds left in the period, though, Guthrie hit Mayer
with a beautiful pass to send the teams into the first
intermission tied at 2-2.
Cox scored the game
winner for St. George's at the 12:53 mark of the second
on a nice wraparound.
Guthrie added two in
the third. On the first he skated unmolested into the
South Kent end, put a nice deke on goaltender Drew
Barber, and simply sliding it behind him to put St.
George's up 4-2.
Guthrie added an empty
netter with 58 seconds remaining.
St. George's plays
Proctor at 12:30 PM Sunday for the Div. II championship.
