| The Fort Worth Texans were the New York
Islanders first extended minor league affiliate which lasted for most
of the 1970's. Note their logo was very similar to the Islanders
except instead of Long Island there was the state of Texas in the
middle of the crest. As far as the franchise, the Fort Worth Wings
originally joined the CPHL in 1967-68 as an affiliate for the Detroit
Red Wings. The next season they joined the Central Hockey League and
remained under the Red Wings control until 1973 when the club was
taken over by Islanders owner Roy LM Boe. The team remained the Wings
in 1973-74 but in 1974-75 they changed their name and logo to the
Texans. Islanders General Manager Bill Torrey served as President and
GM of the Texans. Boe held the position of chairman of the board until
1975 when he became President. Jack Kent Cooke, then owner of the
NHL's Los Angeles Kings and NFL's Washington Redskins, served as
chairman of the board from 1975 until 1977. During that period the
Islanders shared their affiliation with the Kings. In 1977 Boe gave up
his interest in the Texans, one year before he gave up his interest in
the Islanders and sold them to John O. Pickett, Jr. When Cooke left
the organization that same year, the club was taken over by the
Overcash family of Cliff Sr. and Cliff Jr. In 1977-78 the Islanders
shared the Texans with the Minnesota North Stars. 1978-79 was the
Islanders sixth and final year of affiliation with the Texans before
switching over to the CHL's Indianapolis Checkers.
As for the Texans, they remained in the CHL until
1981-82 as an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. After the 1981-82
season, the Texans, the Dallas Black Hawks and Oklahoma City Stars
left the league which marked the beginning of the downfall for the CHL.
The Fort Worth Texans jerseys and colors were pretty
much the same as the New York Islanders and it has often been rumored
that the Islanders had handed down some of their jerseys to be
re-fitted as Fort Worth Texans jerseys. |

Adams Cup Champions 1978
The Fort Worth Texans finished the 1977-78 season
with a 44-29-3 record, good for 91 points in the Central Hockey
League. Entering the playoffs the Texans only had four 20 goal scorers
on the season: Richie Hansen, Bill Hogaboam, Doug Rombough and Alex
McKendry. Hogaboam and Rombough were both members of the Minnesota
North Stars organization, who shared the Islanders affiliate from 1977
to 1979. Rombough also played for the Islanders during 1973-75 but was
traded to Minnesota with Ernie Hicke for J.P. Parise in January of
1975. In the playoffs everything came together for the Texans. Hansen,
who would later become the first Long Island born player to ever skate
for the New York Islanders, led the way with 7 goals and 18 points in
14 playoff games. On defense, Mike Hordy was the most steady and
chipped in 11 points in 14 playoff games. A player on loan to the
Texans from the Montreal Canadiens named Kelly Greenbank chipped in 7
goals and 11 points in 14 playoff games en-route to their
Championship. Islander prospects Don Cutts and Bill Hughes backstopped
the Texans in goal.
Fort Worth had to get past two teams to claim the
Adams Cup. Both series went to deciding 7th games. The Dallas Black
Hawks were a surprise team in the finals that finished with 79 points
in the regular season. They were led by Mike O'Connell, Don Ashby,
Paul Evans and John Anderson. The Texans prevailed in Game 7 of the
championship series to take home the Cup.
