Christie Brinkley Loves the Isles!

December 16, 2006: The Islanders had a special guest attend their game against the Atlanta Thrashers tonight. Former super model and actress Christie Brinkley was in attendance with her son and friends taking in the game with front row seats. They witnessed the Islanders defeat the Thrashers 6-0. During the game, Brinkley was interviewed by Fox Sports Deb Kaufman and Brinkley was very excited. She stated that her and her son were huge DP fans and throughout the entire game she took shots of the players with her digital camera.

Brinkley and all the boys were wearing official Islanders jerseys with the name Brinkley and the #02 on the back. After the game, she was waiting in the runway for #1 star of the game Rick DiPietro, who posted the shutout. She snapped a picture of the Islanders goaltender and he shook the boys hands. DiPietro then took them  all into the Islanders dressing room.

Christie was screaming and very much enjoying the game whenever the players would crash into the boards near her and her party during the game.

Brinkley, now 52, has been a model for Cover Girl since 1972 and she appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue three years in a row from 1979-81. She is a supporter of animal rights and a member of PETA.

Nolan Signed for Three Years

June 13, 2006: Ted Nolan has proven that he has a way with players. He has proven that he can be a master of motivation. Just look at what he did in Moncton with the QMJHL's Wildcats last season. He brought the team to new heights. A first President Cup as champion of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. First overall in the league during the regular season at 52-15-0-3. 38 games over the .500 mark. Twenty-two franchise records were set. By far the most spirited, entertaining and hard-working team the Wildcats have ever put on the ice.

- The Wildcats played 102 games with the exhibition schedule, regular season, playoffs and 2006 Memorial Cup combined and finished with an overall record of 72-27-0-3. They came up short in the Memorial Cup final - the Quebec Remparts defeated them 6-2 - but that surely doesn't take away from their outstanding season.

In 2004-05 Moncton finished with the 5th overall best record in the Quebec League with a 37-23-8-2 record and 84 points. Nolan took them to the next level in 2005-06, with 107 points. Moncton allowed a league low 184 goals against in 72 games played while contributing 345 goals scored.

In 1996-97 Nolan coached the Buffalo Sabres to a first place finish in the Northeast Division with 92 points, a 19 point improvement from 1995-96 when the team missed the playoffs. The Sabres improved from 33-42-7 in 1995-96 to 40-30-12 in 1996-97 and Nolan helped them trim 54 goals on their goals against to just 208. The Buffalo Sabres went to the Conference Semi-Finals in 1997 and Nolan was named coach of the year.

It's Nolan's decision who will round out the Islanders coaching staff and all he's saying for now is that he wants to take time to digest everything. It is quite possible that Wildcats associate coach Danny Flynn and assistant coach Daniel Lacroix, a former Islander for one game, will both end up with him in New York.

There is plenty of speculation as to if Nolan's presence as the Islanders coach can possibly help them come free agency time. It has been well documented that the Islanders are in the market to improve their defense corp. and already have comprised a short list that includes the names of Jay McKee and former Islanders Bryan McCabe(if the Toronto deal falls through), Zdeno Chara and Wade Redden. As for McKee, he has stated that he is a life long Sabre and wants to return. But are the Sabres brass willing to make the dollars work? If not, would McKee's second option be to sign with the Islanders and Nolan, the only other coach McKee has played for in the NHL besides Lindy Ruff?

There's also a possibility that Michael Peca could return, as he has been quoted a few times in the past week about how much he admires Nolan. If he does return it most assuredly will be for much less than the previous contract he signed for $4.99 million. A more likely cap number would be no more higher than $2-2.5 million.

Nolan is also familiar with Alexei Zhitnik and to a lesser extent Miroslav Satan, who joined the Sabres at the trade deadline in 1997.

Nolan will work for Moncton through the end of June to help the club in a transition period while it looks for a new head coach. Did the Islanders understand when he mentioned that he wanted to stay with the Wildcats a little longer to help out?

"I don't know if they understood. I just said it," he said, something that drew laughter from throughout the room at the news conference.

"I had some obligations to fill. We worked extremely hard on this draft. We worked on getting some free agents to come in for next season. I wanted to stay awhile longer and see this thing through.

"I've always preached to our players about loyalty and having respect for the people that you work with. To leave for Long Island (N.Y.) and forget about Moncton, I wasn't going to do that."

- islesinfo.com has learned that the length of Ted Nolan's contract with the Islanders is for 3 years.

Pre-2003

"Crazy"? It Sure Was!

In the recap of the Islanders win over Vancouver, I mentioned the post game interview with Dave Scatchard on the radio. Apparently that interview has taken on a life of it's own as word got back to Pat Quinn of what Scatchard had to say.

- Scatchard: "Hopefully we can get a big lead and then take care of business. I think we have some getting even to do. We've got a little vendetta to settle with the Leafs from the playoffs. It'll be interesting to see how the game goes. It could get a little crazy."

- Quinn: "I think I could handle him."

IslesInfo comment: Just about every player on both sides are downplaying the meeting as just another game. But do they REALLY feel that way deep down when they step on the ice? It's nice to see Scatchard say the things he did. It adds to the rivalry and he showed some team spirit for the Islanders. Some of the interview was meant in a joking fashion. But i'm sure he meant some of it as well. I can't understand how Pat Quinn could even remotely question the toughness of Scatchard. Dave, as we know, is one of the more sought after Islanders there are and this is not a case of Pat Burns not knowing who Bill Berg was unless he ran him over in a parking lot. It was just a little over two weeks ago that Scatchard broke Florida defenseman Lance Ward's nose with a single right hand punch. Maybe Quinn should worry more about if whether he'll start the game tonight with the correct lineup card and the right amount of players instead of making remarks about Dave Scatchard.

Isles Falling for Weinhandl

I'm glad Evan Grossman has jumped on the bandwagon of my recent statement that Mattias Weinhandl, if he keeps up the pace and improving alongside Alexei Yashin, could be the best rookie in the league.

BAM line time: We don't want to jinx the Isles new young rising star. Hell, besides having him continue to improve, I just want the announcers to pronounce his name right, hehe.(note: I've begun that campaign after Wednesday night's game; vayn-hanh-duhl). Anyway, the line is red hot as of late and it looks like the Islanders have something really good going with 3 solid lines that are clicking. The coaching staff has finally found three matching lines with incredible chemistry. Weinhandl has added a new dimension to the top line and is proving to be a good right hand compliment to Yashin, while the young Swedes presence seems to have opened up the ice for Brad Isbister to get to the net more as opposing teams are 1) keying on Yashin and Weinhandl and 2) don't know just how good Weinhandl is. The BAM line has accounted for 4 of the Isles last 5 goals in the last two games. As a group they have 13 points in their last three games. Laviolette remarked about Weinhandl that while Yashin and Isbister or more larger players, the swift rookie plays more low to the ice and is able to make nifty passes as well as use his vision on the ice. Not bad for a player who almost lost vision in his left eye. It's ironic that it took an injury to the hottest Islander over a week ago, Oleg Kvasha, to get Weinhandl back up and on the top line. Now Kvasha will be looking to work his way back probably on the fourth line.

- Yashin is currently on a 6 game point scoring streak in which he has 1-9-10. Another factor for his improved play is the return of Michael Peca who looks to be back to full form and providing less attention to Yashin. Captain Crunch is throwing hits and seems to be back to 100%, surprising unaware opponents who fail to keep their heads on a swivel.
