Isles Info:
2004-05 Update:
It is definitely great
news that Blaine Down wasn't seriously hurt back in
January when he was carried off the ice on a stretcher.
And he should make a full recovery. But his career with
the Sound Tigers hasn't really been anything to talk
about. He has been a role player for most of his three
seasons, constantly injured, and hasn't really done much
at all for the team. I can't say he is taking the roster
spot of a young prospect because most teams in the AHL
need free agent signings to fill a roster. But his
future with the Sound Tigers could end at any time.
CAN'T
KEEP A GOOD MAN DOWN
Blaine Will Make Complete Recovery
(January
31, 2005) In the big picture, Blaine Down is going to be
all right -- and that's all that really matters.
Although he is likely to miss the remainder of the
season, Blaine is being released from the hospital this
evening and is expected to be able to play hockey again.
The gritty Sound
Tigers forward was seriously injured during the second
period of Bridgeport's 6-4 win over Hartford yesterday
at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The game was delayed 20
minutes as Down was treated on the ice by paramedics and
Bridgeport trainer Garrett Timms. Blaine's neck was
stabillized and he was removed from the playing surface
on a stretcher.
After several
examinations at Bridgeport Hospital, it was determined
that Down suffered fractures of three vetebral bodies of
his cervical spine. According to Islanders medical
director Elliot Pellman, "The fractures were
uncomplicated and both neurologically and radiologically
never posed a significant problem." Pellman cited
the Bridgeport staff's "excellent, appropriate
on-ice treatment" and was encouraged by the
hospital's decision to release Down from the hospital
today.
"Although I
cannot say definitively that he is out for the remainder
of this season," said Pellman, "I can tell you
that once he heals and is cleared by a specialist,
Blaine will be able to resume his hockey career."
"The most
important thing was his well-being," said Islanders
general manager Mike Milbury. "Once it was
determined Blaine was going to be okay, it's great news
to hear he'll be able to continue doing what he loves
most --playing hockey. Blaine's a terrific kid, a real
honest, hard-working hockey player. We wish him the best
and look forward to seeing him back at the rink when
he's ready."
