Colgate
Holds On to Take 4-3 Win Over No. 7 Clarkson to Force
Deciding Game Three
POTSDAM, N.Y.
(3/15/08) – Colgate’s second line combined to
score three goals, including the game-winner 1:58 into
the third period, as the Raider men’s hockey team
defeated No. 7 Clarkson, 4-3, in the second game of
their best-of-three ECAC Hockey quarterfinal series on
Saturday, Mar. 15, at Cheel Arena. Colgate improves to
17-16-6 overall, while the Golden Knights drop to
21-11-4 heading into the winner-take-all game, which
will be played on Sunday, Mar. 16, starting at 7:00 p.m.
The game-winner came after freshman Brian Day
(Danvers, Mass.) used a heads-up pass to break
sophomore David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and junior
Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) toward the other end on a
2-on-1, with McIntyre carrying the puck on the left
side. McIntyre skated hard toward the net, beat his
defender, and put a low shot on Clarkson goalie David
Leggio. Leggio appeared to have made the save, but
the puck trickled between his legs and over the goal
line. Although the red light did not go on, a linesman
signaled for the goal, and after a video review, referee
Joe Ross concurred to make the score 4-3 in Colgate’s
favor 1:58 into the third period. The Raiders played
hard-nosed defense the rest of the way, including
withstanding more than a minute of 6-on-5 hockey as
Clarkson’s net stood empty at the end of the game, to
earn the win.
The teams combined for four goals in the first period,
after combining for just three goals in their previous
three meetings this season. Colgate scored its first
goal of the year against Clarkson 4:18 into the game.
Day skated into the zone on a 2-on-1 with Riley, and
carried the puck down the left side. As he neared the
net, Day crossed the puck to Riley at the base of the
right circle, and Riley scored into the open net on the
back-door play.
A fracas broke out
deep in the Clarkson attacking zone after a Golden
Knight took out Dekanich near the midpoint of the second
period. When the dust settled, three players from each
team were sent to their respective sin bins. While both
benches were short, the Raiders capitalized to take
their third lead of the night, 3-2. Day received a
breakout pass just before he hit the blueline to earn a
breakaway. However, his shot glanced off of Leggio’s
blocker and into the left corner. Clarkson picked it up,
but Day wrested it back along the left boards. He skated
with the puck toward the middle, where he found McIntyre
streaking in on the right side, and McIntyre roofed it
for his first goal of the playoffs.
Bogdanich’s
Goal Gives Colgate 4-3 Overtime Win at No. 19 Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn.
(2/24/08) –
Junior Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.), who was
celebrating his 23rd birthday, scored with
exactly one minute left in overtime to lift Colgate to a
4-3 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday, Feb. 24, at the TD
Banknorth Sports Center. The win puts the Raiders back
over .500 at 14-13-5 overall, and gives them an 8-8-4
record in ECAC Hockey play, while the Bobcats fall to
17-11-4 overall and 9-7-4 in the league.
The Raiders responded
just over a minute later. Freshman Brian Day
(Danvers, Mass.) was fighting for control of the
puck along the left boards, just outside the blue line,
but got tangled up with a Bobcat and the puck came
loose. Several Quinnipiac players were in the vicinity,
but it was Colgate sophomore David McIntyre (Pefferlaw,
Ont.) who grabbed the rubber and streaked in alone on
net. He faked to his backhand before returning to his
forehand to flip the puck into the cage past Fisher’s
blocker.
Colgate evened things
up with 5:10 to play in the second period. McIntyre dug
the puck out of the right corner to junior Tom Riley
(Ottawa, Ont.) in the right circle. Riley shot, and
Fisher made the save, but ended up a few feet out of his
crease and couldn’t control the rebound. Day picked up
the loose puck and scored into the open right side of
the net. The goal broke a 16-game scoring drought for
Day.
Yale
Comes Out on Top, 6-4, in Back-and-Forth Affair with
Colgate
NEW HAVEN, Conn.
(11/11/07) –
Yale scored twice in the final seven minutes of the
third period to earn a 6-4 win against Colgate on
Sunday, Nov. 11, at Ingalls Rink. With the win, the
Bulldogs move to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-2 in ECAC Hockey
play, while the Raiders drop to 3-6-1 overall and 0-3-1
in the league.
Sloane helped Colgate
get on the board at the 7:49 mark of the opening frame.
Junior Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wis.) held the puck
at the left point as the Raiders set up in the zone, and
he crossed it down to sophomore David McIntyre (Pefferlaw,
Ont.) in the right circle. McIntyre put a shot on goal,
which Yale netminder Billy Blase stopped, but the
rebound came out to Sloane near the blue line. He fired
a rocket on net which was redirected by freshman Brian
Day (Danvers, Mass.) for his sixth goal of the
season.
Just over five minutes
into the third period, Yale was looking for its fifth
goal of the night. A Bulldog was going to goal when Day
rushed in to push him off the puck. Day’s momentum
carried both him and the Yale player into the net, and
into Dekanich, who was slammed hard to the ice. Dekanich
was taken to the bench by Colgate head athletic trainer
Steve Chouinard, and he was replaced in net by classmate
Justin Kowalkoski (Young America, Minn.) at the 5:10
mark.
Colgate
Wins Offensive Battle with RIT, 6-5, in Men’s Hockey
HAMILTON, N.Y.
(10/13/07) – Colgate freshman Brian Day
(Danvers, Mass.) scored his third goal of the
weekend 13:27 into the third period to lift the Raider
hockey team to a 6-5 win against RIT on Saturday, Oct.
13, at Starr Rink.
Twelve different Raiders recorded at least one point,
and five players had multiple-point games. Sophomore
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) led the way with three
points on a goal and two assists, and Day finished with
two goals.
Day’s game-winning goal came after classmate Wade
Poplawski (Winnipeg, Man.) sent a cross-ice pass to
junior Mark Anderson (Hastings, Neb.) at the right
point. Anderson shot on goal, and Day tipped the puck
past RIT goalie Louis Menard to give Colgate the 6-5
lead. Menard vacated his net for the final 1:32, and
Colgate had to withstand a late offensive flurry by the
Tigers. However, the Raider defense was firm and senior
goaltender Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made
four late saves in quick succession to preserve the win.
Colgate re-established
a two-goal lead 11:15 into the second period. Senior
Matt Torti (Oxford, Mass.) sent the puck ahead to
McIntyre, who pulled his defender toward him, then
dropped a pass to Day in the high slot. With a quick
release, Day beat Menard five-hole.
McIntyre netted the
tying goal at the 7:47 mark to set up Day's heroics.
Brisebois got the puck to Williams, who chipped it off
the wall to McIntyre. McIntyre beat his defenseman to
create a 2-on-1 chance. Menard stopped McIntyre's first
shot, but the Raider sniper picked up his own rebound
and found twine to tie the score at 5-5.
- 6-2 win vs. Sacred Heart October
12, 2007: HAMILTON,
N.Y. (10/12/07) – Nine different Raiders recorded
at least one point as the Colgate men’s hockey team
skated to a 6-2 win against Sacred Heart in the season
opener for both teams on Friday, Oct. 12, at Starr Rink.
The Raiders regained
the two-goal lead 16 seconds later. Brisebois gave the
puck to junior Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) in the middle,
and he passed it to freshman Brian Day (Danvers,
Mass.) on the left side. Day put the puck over
Stefan Drew’s glove for his first collegiate goal.
Rookies
Come Up Big for Raiders
by Isaac Goodling, gocolgateraiders.com, Mar.
5, 2008
HAMILTON, N.Y.
(3/5/08) - In recent years the Colgate
men’s hockey team has established a tradition of
first-year players quickly becoming contributors on
the ice, with a player named to the ECAC Hockey all-rookie
team in three of the last four seasons.
Carrying the torch for the youth movement this year are forward
Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) and
defenseman Kevin McNamara (Chestnut Hill, Mass.), a
pair of outstanding players who have combined for 31
points in their first 34 collegiate games to rank first
and second on the team in scoring among freshmen.
However, there is more than just their talent
separating them from the average rookie hockey player,
as the two have been friends and rivals almost since
the day that they first laced up their skates.
After playing against
each other for several years in Boston youth leagues,
Day and McNamara found themselves on the same squad
for a select summer league, which helped solidify
their friendship. Though they chose to attend
different prep schools, with Day going to the Governor’s
Academy while McNamara was at Belmont Hill, they
continued playing together during the summers. It
is in large part because of this relationship that the
Raiders were fortunate enough to add both players to
their roster. Day committed first, and it was on
his advice that McNamara decided to look seriously at
Colgate as well.
“Brian definitely
influenced me during the college search,” McNamara
said. “I hadn’t heard much about Colgate
before he decided to come, but the opportunity came
along for me to talk to Colgate. I came out for a
visit and actually ended up canceling my visit to
Cornell because it just felt right.”
Adding to their
prestigious resumes, the duo was selected to play for
the U.S. Under-17 National Team in the summer of 2004. They
traveled with a number of other young players to
compete in Halle, Germany.
“Getting a chance to
play for your country and wear the USA jersey was a
great experience,” Day said. “We also had six
Massachusetts guys, so we got to represent our state
as well as our country.”
Playing against such
lofty competition also helped both players gain
confidence as they eyed the transition to college. In
part because of this, each of them wasted little time
getting into the box score once they arrived at Starr
Rink. Day scored his first collegiate goal during
the team’s opener, knocking in what would go on to
become the game-winner against Sacred Heart. Never
one to fall behind, McNamara recorded his first point
as a Raider the very next day with an assist against
RIT.
“We both came from
great high schools, which I think prepared us really
well,” McNamara said. “College hockey has
bigger, faster guys, which takes some getting used to,
but I feel like we’ve both been able to step in
pretty well this season.”
Helping with the
transition has been the comfort level that the two of
them have coming in as roommates, eliminating the
sometimes difficult adjustment process that many freshmen
go through. This is not to say that things are
always entirely friendly, however, as both admit that
they are extremely competitive with each other in
nearly every area.
“We definitely still
have some competitive edge in practice,” Day said. “When
we get matched up in one-on-one drills in practice, I
like to take it to him a little bit.”
“I think he’s still
just mad because I’ve had the edge over the
years,” McNamara interjected. “My teams have
won way more than his. Overall, though, we’re
just competitive people, whether we play basketball,
squash, or anything else. It’s more about working
together once we’re on the ice though. He’s
the scorer, so it’s just my job to get him the
puck.”
After following each
other through the youth leagues, to prep school, and
now college, the question remains as to whether the
duo will be able to continue their play together after
graduation. Day has already been drafted by the
New York Islanders, and McNamara will have the
opportunity to be drafted this summer.
“Getting drafted was
a great experience,” Day said. “I wasn’t
really expecting anything, but I was keeping tabs on
the draft online, and then I got a call from my
advisor letting me know that I had been drafted. I had
a chance to go out to Long Island for the rookie camp
and get acquainted with the organization, and it’s
been a great experience so far.”
McNamara is
philosophical about his draft chances, putting a
positive spin on the process regardless of the
outcome.
“Getting drafted
anywhere would be great,” McNamara said. “If
the Islanders are interested then it would be awesome
to get to play with Brian and keep hanging out with
him. Otherwise, I would love to go somewhere else
and beat him some more. If I get drafted, then
great. But if not, then I’m just going to keep
helping Colgate win.”
With that kind of
attitude it seems certain that McNamara will fit in
well no matter where he ends up in the next few years,
whether it is with Day or not. However, as long
as the Raiders have this dynamic duo on the ice
together, the team can be certain that it will
continue to be in good hands. After all, as
McNamara is quick to point out, he has a habit of
being on the winning team.

USHS: Q&A with
Brian Day
by Vincent Montalbano, mckeenshockey.com, Mar. 18,
2007
McKeen's recently had
a chance to conduct a Q&A with New York Islanders
prospect Brian Day, who is currently playing for
Governor's Academy in the New England Prep School
Association. Day speaks about his game, his 2006 draft
experience, future college commitments, and on
representing Team USA at the Under-17 Tournament in
2004.
McKeen's: How
did you become interested in hockey? At what age did you
start playing organized hockey?
Day: I started
skating when I was two years old. I fell in love with
the sport. My father never played and I don't have a
strong hockey family background. However, I did learn to
skate down the street, with the Hayes family, who had a
rink in their backyard. I grew up skating with Dustin,
who was my age, and his parents taught me all the way
through.
McKeen's:
Describe the type of game you play. What are your
strengths? Weaknesses?
Day: I am a
strong forward who prides himself on physical play and
winning one-on-one battles. I am a very competitive
person. Also, I see the ice well and create things on
the ice with a smart hockey sense and patience with the
puck. My weakness may include trying to over handle the
puck, and being more of a factor in the defensive zone.
McKeen's:: What
would you say is the most underrated facet to your game?
Day: I think
that my hands and ability to be creative on odd man
rushes and in the offensive zone is sometimes
overlooked. Most people see me just as a physical
forward, but I have a smart hockey sense and can be
patient with the puck.
McKeen's: Which
NHL player do you model your game after and why?
Day: I model my
game after Chris Drury who is one of the hardest working
players in the NHL. He is a physical player who can
score as well. He is a good athlete and his
competitiveness makes him one of the best players in the
NHL.
McKeen's:: Who
are the five most talented players you have played
against or with and what specifically do you admire
about their styles?
Day: 1. Kyle
Okposo – His size and strength along with pure
scoring ability makes him an extremely dangers player.
2. Brian Gibbons – His ability to see the ice and make
passes makes him one of the easiest players to play
with. 3. Benn Ferriero – He is one of the most patient
players with the puck and will make for a good NHL
player. 4. Erik Johnson – An all-around solid
defenseman.
McKeen's: The
2006 NHL Entry Draft you were drafted by the New York
Islanders in the sixth round; How did you find out? What
was it like to get that news?
Day: I was
looking at it online, but I wasn't paying much attention
to it. I wasn't expecting anything, but my family
advisor called me at 12:30 a.m., right before I went to
sleep and told me the good news.
McKeen's: You
attended the Islanders Development Camp in July; what
was that experience like, and did the organization tell
you anything about what they want you to work on or what
they expect from you?
Day: The
experience was great to meet all the guys and everybody
in the organization. They just told me they would keep
in touch and follow me throughout the season. It is
still early for me and they just said they want to keep
in touch every month or so.
McKeen's: What
do you focus on during off-season training?
Day: I tried to
focus on my skating last summer as I skated three days a
week with Paul Vincent. Lifting is a big part of my
summers too as I am running and lifting 6 days a week. I
try to stay away from summer tournaments and games and
try to improve as a player.
McKeen's: Being
already committed to Colgate for next year and drafted
by the Islanders, is there a lot less stress this season
than last year?
Day: There was
definitely a sense of relief. I didn't have to worry
about impressing anyone and I could just relax and have
fun.
McKeen's: What
was your main reason for choosing Colgate?
Day: I chose
Colgate for similar reasons why I chose GDA. It was just
the feeling I got when I visited the school. The coaches
were great and showed a great deal of interest. Also, it
is obviously a great academic school. I will also have a
chance to step in and be a key player as a freshman and
will have a chance to make an impact.
McKeen's: Which
areas do you consider you have to improve to succeed in
the next level in college and further?
Day: I need to
continue to do the same things that I did in high
school. The game is a lot faster and if I can transfer
my skills in high school to the next level, I will have
a better chance in being a good college player.
McKeen's: You
played in 2004 for the U-17 during the summer, what was
that experience like?
Day: Anytime
you get to represent your country it is an honour. There
is no other feeling than putting on the red, white, and
blue jersey with USA across your chest.

Governors 4-1
Event Date: December 12, 2006, stsebs.org
The Varsity Hockey
team journeyed to Byfield to take on Governor’s
Academy on Tuesday, December 12th. The Govs were on the
offensive right from the opening faceoff as they sent
two forecheckers aggressively into the Arrows zone,
creating turnovers and quality scoring chances for the
fleet footed forwards from Governor’s Academy.
Thankfully Connor Toomey '07, who has enjoyed tremendous
success at the Frost Arena over the last three years,
was equal to the task. While one shot did get by Toomey
in the opening period, a goal by Colgate bound Brian
Day, the Arrows were able to survive the opening
five minutes and begin to play more of their own game.
At the 8:36 mark of the period Joe Ennis ’07 would
score on a shot from the blue line that found its way
through the goalie’s pads to knot the game at one.
Mike Hoban ’08 and Chris Brown ’09 picked up the
assists. That would be the only scoring of the opening
period as the Arrows were fortunate to escape with score
at 1-1. The Arrows were outshot by a 13-3 margin.

Dougherty deflected a pass from linemate John Shepard

Academy's Herbie Kent to provide the heroics cleaning up
a rebound from Brian Day's wrist shot from the
left circle just :28 seconds into the extra session. The
Governor's improve their record to 1-3 and face a busy
week with 4 games to play in the next six days.

Strength: An outstanding athlete and
accomplished multi-sport star who plays a smart, physical game and is more
than the sum of his parts.
Weakness: Is coming off a disappointing
year, when a knee injury in football dropped his hockey production.
What they’re saying: “I think he’s
rated lower than he deserves (by Central Scouting) because they don’t
know the back story on his knee. He’s a skilled, savvy player who plays
with a lot of heart and desire.” – Woodlief
Prediction: Where Day goes could be
directly proportional to how much a prospective NHL team has scouted him
and is aware that he wasn’t 100 percent last season. He’s a first-day
talent, but probably won’t be called until round 5.
