Calder Cup playoffs 1992
After missing the playoffs in 1991 the Capital
District Islanders made the post season in 1992 despite finishing 5
games under .500. Still, Capital District managed to take the
Springfield Indians to a seventh game before losing 5-1 in Springfield
on April 22, 1992. CDI got great performances in the playoffs from
Greg Parks who scored 5 goals and 13 points in the 7 games. Also
shining for CDI was free agent signed defenseman Jeff Sharples who
contributed 6 goals and 11 points in 7 games played. But the Indians,
now an affiliate of the Hartford Whalers, were too much for the baby
Isles. Springfield moved on to the second round on the backs of
players like Daniel Shank, Terry Yake, Mike McHugh and former Islander
Shawn Evans. The Indians were swept in the second round by the
eventual Calder Cup Champions, the Adirondack Red Wings.
Calder Cup playoffs 1993
In 1993 the Capital District Islanders finished the
regular season with their best record, a .500 record. In the first
round of the playoffs they faced the defending Calder Cup champions,
the Adirondack Red Wings, who finished only one point better than CDI
during the regular season. It may have looked like an even match
before it started, but the Red Wings cruised by Capital District in
four straight led by 59 goal scorer Chris Tancill, Darren McCarty,
Mike Sillinger, Allan Bester, Jeff Rohlicek and future Islanders Micah
Aivazoff and Jim Cummins. Iain Fraser, who led CDI with 110 points
during the regular season which was second in the AHL, only registered
an assist in his four games played. Adirondack went on to lose a 7
game second round series to the Springfield Indians.
