Armstrong was the New York Islanders 5th choice, 128th overall in
the 1992 Entry Draft. The Isles took notice of him after he led all
Ontario Hockey League rookies in scoring for the Sudbury Wolves in
1991-92. Armstrong joined the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, the Islanders
minor league team, in 1993-94. His first NHL game came against the
Florida Panthers in Miami on April 14th, 1994. Derek spent the entire
next season with the Denver Grizzlies of the IHL and contributed to
their Turner Cup Championship in 1995. In 1995-96 he saw action with the
Worcester IceCats of the AHL, but also spent 19 games with the Isles.
1996-97 had Armstrong playing 50 games for the Islanders, putting up 13
points, and also getting in 19 games for the Utah Grizzlies. At the end
of that season the Isles decided not to resign Derek. He did not prove
to be the best skater in the world but he had decent size and skill and
wasn't afraid to muck it up in the corners. "Army" has since
had very short stints with the Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers. From
1997 to 2001 he toiled mostly with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL
which included an AHL leading 101 point season and MVP honors in
2000-01. In
2001-02 he skated in Europe with Bern of the British Leagues.
In 2002 Armstrong was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Kings and put up the best two seasons of his NHL career heading into the 2004 lockout. During the lockout, he went back overseas to Switzerland and played for Rapperswil-Jona. When the NHL resumed in 2005-06, Armstrong returned to Los Angeles and contributed a career high with 41 points in 62 games played. |
