| Following draft
day moves in 2001 to acquire star players Alexei Yashin from Ottawa and
Michael Peca from Buffalo, the Islanders had a renaissance season in
2001-02 and finished with a record of 42-28-8-4. Their 96 points was
just beaten out by Philadelphia for the Atlantic Division title and the
Islanders finished in 5th place in the Eastern Conference, qualifying
for the postseason for the first time in 8 years. With success comes a
lower draft choice, something the Islanders were happy to accept for the
first time in a while. So with the 22nd pick overall, GM Mike Milbury
decided not to wheel and deal by selecting C Sean Bergenheim from
Finland. The first player from that country to be drafted in the first
round by the Islanders, Bergenheim came into the draft touted as perhaps
the fastest skating player available. The only knock was that his
offensive ability may be a bit limited. That's a pretty big knock, but
with time Bergenheim could develop into a solid third line role player
in the NHL.
Hits: It's still way too early to tell. It usually takes a good 5 to 7 years before you can really evaluate a draft. Could Martin Chabada be a hit for the Islanders? He had a pretty good first season in North America, and a strong playoff, playing for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. While Bergenheim represented Finland in the 2003 World Junior Championships, Marcus Paulsson was a member of the Swedish squad. Danish born Franz Nielsen represented Denmark in their first World Championships appearance since the 1949 in 2003. Turn Back the Clock: Only Milbury knows if the Islanders tried to make a deal or not. It would have been very interesting to see if the Islanders would have selected Eric Nystrom out of Michigan, the son of former Islander great Bobby Nystrom. But instead Eric was long gone by the time the Islanders came up to the podium. The budding power forward ended up going 10th overall to the Calgary Flames

C Sean
Bergenheim - Speed, speed & more speed. That personifies Bergenheim's game. Sean has been playing for Jokerit the
last two season, the top team in Finland. As a 19 year old his numbers have been
modest in what is traditionally a low scoring league. Some question his
offensive ability, but he did go 2-4-6 in 7 WJC games.
Drafted: 1st round, 22nd overall |
C
Franz Nielsen - A high scoring junior star in Denmark, Nielsen is hoping
to one day become the first Danish born player to reach the NHL. He has been
slowly integrated into the lineup with Malmo of the SEL. This past May he was
named a member of Denmark's World Championship representative. He was held
scoreless in 6 games.
Drafted: 3rd round, 87th overall |
C Marcus Paulsson -
The Islanders drafted Marcus out of Morrum in Sweden. He was drafted by
the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL the summer of 2002, which was a good for
one that plays a rougher style. Paulsson went 13-18-31 in 56 games. He was
also named to the Swedish Team in the WJC's and notched 3 assists in 6
games.
Draft: 5th round, 149th overall |
D Alexei Stonkus -
Stonkus, at 5-11 and 175 lbs, is a bit of a project for the New York
Islanders. He didn't play in many games this season so his development may
have been slowed down a bit. He got into 9 games with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl
and another 3 for the Russian under 20 team in the 4 nations tournament.
Draft: 6th round, 189th overall |
G Brad Topping -
Had a very good season in 2002-03 with Brampton of the OHL. He backstopped
them to the second round of the playoffs until getting ousted by fellow
Islander prospect Andy Chiodo and St. Mikes. Has one year of junior
eligibility remaining. In three OHL season he has compiled a record of
56-52-10 in 128 games. Draft: 7th round, 220th overall |
LW Martin Chabada -
Played the entire 2002-03 season with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the
AHL where he put up decent numbers in his first year in North America.
Chabada went 17-13-30 in 66 games played. He was even better in the
playoffs where he went 3-4-7 in 9 games. Martin should get another good
look in training camp this fall.
Draft: 8th round, 252nd overall |
D
Per Braxenholm - Played with Morrum GoIS which is a Swedish
division 2 team in 2002-03. Was a teammate of Marcus Paulsson in 2001-02
with Morrum. Braxenholm's play early on in the season prompted the team to
trade another one of their defensemen to make room for the youngster. A
defensive d-man with size at 6-3, 215lbs.
Draft: 9th round, 283rd overall |
