| The Islanders
finished the 1996-97 season with a 29-41-12 record and the 5th pick
overall in the draft. Thanks to a deal the Islanders made with Toronto
at the trade deadline the previous season of 1995-96 the Isles gained
Toronto's 1997 first round pick along with Kenny Jonsson, Darby
Hendrickson and Sean Haggerty in exchange for Wendel Clark, Mathieu
Schneider and prospect D.J. Smith. Luckily for the Islanders, Toronto
had an even worse season in 1996-97 going 30-44-8, giving the Islanders
the 4th pick overall along with their own 5th pick overall. This would
be GM Mike Milbury's second draft that he would oversee and coming in he
stated that this was a very important draft in the future of the New
York Islanders being the fact that they had these two early picks and
had missed the playoffs for 3 straight seasons. There were rumors that
Roberto Luongo, a Quebec League goaltender, could become the highest
drafted goaltender ever since Tom Barrasso went #5 overall to Buffalo in
1983, John Davidson #5 overall to St. Louis in 1973 and Ray Martyniuk #5
overall to Montreal in 1970. The Islanders did just that selecting him
with the 4th pick overall. With the next pick the Islanders went with
the top rated defenseman in the draft, taking Eric Brewer from the
Prince George Cougars of the WHL. Looking back at this draft 4 more
playoffless years later, the players selected have had more of an impact
in trades than they ever did on the ice for the Islanders (see the 2000
Draft profile). Jeff Zehr and Jarrett Smith, two selections the
Islanders hoped at least one of would turn out, both failed to make it
into the system. The only player left in the Islanders system is a very
tall and lanky Petr Mika who has yet to put anything together and
develop into even a solid AHL player.

G Roberto Luongo - Was considered the Islanders
goaltender of the future and the best prospect in the world 2 years in a row by
THN. Went 7-14-1 in 24 appearances in 1999-00 posting a 3.25 GAA with Isles.
Milbury soured on Luongo's poor attitude and game day apartment hunt fiasco.
Traded to Florida for Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish.Drafted: 1st round, 4th overall |
D Eric Brewer - Struggled through two season with the
Islanders but seems to have found himself in Edmonton. Often seemed lost and out
of position. In 89 career games with the Isles he went 5-8-13 with 52 PIM's.
Traded to Edmonton with Josh Green and a 2000 second round pick for Roman
Hamrlik, June 24, 2000. Hamrlik was drafted #1 in 1992.
Drafted: 1st round, 5th overall |
LW Jeff Zehr - Seemed like a great pick for the
Isles at the time. Zehr came to Islander camp with a bit of over
confidence. Gained a bad reputation when he missed a curfew in junior and
was suspended. Went 82-128-210 in 197 games in Junior. Signed as a free
agent with Boston in June of 1999. Scored 3 points in 23 ECHL games
in 2000-01.Draft: 2nd round, 31st overall |
C Jarrett Smith - Smith was being built up as a
possible top 5 pick for 2 years before his draft. He never lived up to his
promise. In 5 years in the OHL he went 81-113-194 in 248 games played.
Signed as a free agent with Anaheim in June of 2000. Split time between
their AHL team in Cincinnati and the ECHL's Baton Rouge Kingfish in
2000-01.
Draft: 3rd round, 59th overall |
D Robert Schnabel - Big Czech d-man at 6-6, 216
pounds. The Isles decided not to sign him and he re-entered the draft in
1998. Was taken by Phoenix 129th overall and has played with Springfield
of the AHL the last 3 seasons. Was acquired by Atlanta off waivers in
January 2000. Signed as a free agent by Nashville in July 2001. Draft: 3rd round, 79th overall |
C Petr Mika - Mika is basically the Islanders last
hope for this draft. Unfortunately he has done nothing for the last two
years. Huge center is 6-4 194 pounds. He went 8-9-17 in 50 games during
1999-00 with Lowell of the AHL. He also went scoreless in 3 games with the
Isles. Last season he had only 3 assists in 40 games between
Lowell/Springfield.
Draft: 4th round, 85th overall |
C Adam Edinger - Knock on him is his skating.
Struggled his first two years at Bowling Green. Over his 4 years he went
57-74-131 in 135 games played. He had a 3 games tryout with the Isles ECHL
affiliate Trenton Titans in 1999-00 and scored 3 goals and 4 points. Last
season he was the leading scorer for the New Orleans Brass with 76 points.
Draft: 5th round, 115th overall |
LW Bobby Leavins - Asset was his speed. In his 3
years in the WHL he went 21-34-55 in 160 games played. Played 22 games in
1999-00 with the now defunct Alexandria Warthogs in the WPHL. He scored a
goal and 5 assists for 6 points. Where he is now is not known.
Draft: 6th round, 139th overall |
LW Kris Knoblauch - 6-3 202 pound left winger was
never really in the Isles plans. Spent 3 years in the WHL where he went
56-69-125 in 203 games played with Red Deer, Kootenay and Lethbridge.
Played 4 playoff games with the UHL's Ashville Smoke in 1999-00. Went
25-26-51 in 47 games with U. of Alberta in the CIAU in 2000-01.
Draft: 7th round, 166th overall |
G Jeremy Symington - Just finished four years of college hockey at
St. Lawrence of the ECAC. Not in the Isles future plans. He has posted a
career record of 21-15-0 in 43 appearances. Never took the #1 job over at
St. Lawrence until 2000-01, his senior year, when he went 14-7-0 with a
3.21 GAA.
Draft: 8th round, 196th overall |
D Ryan Clark - Just finished 4 years of college at Notre Dame of
the CCHA. 6-3 205 pound defensive defenseman put up career stats of
2-13-15 with 187 PIM's in 121 games played. Doubtful that he will be in
the Islanders future plans. Was a teammate of Brett Henning.Draft: 9th round, 222nd overall |
