1993 Draft

The Islanders came off their best season in years going 40-37-7 and a trip to the Wales Conference Finals versus Montreal. Things were looking good and newly named GM Don Maloney was looking to add to that in his first draft. In what seemed like a good move at the time Maloney tried to strengthen the position in goal by acquiring Ron Hextall from Quebec for Mark Fitzpatrick and a swap of first rounders. That would drop the Islanders from the 14th pick to number 23 overall. It also followed the release of fan favorite Glenn Healy who was one of the main catalysts in the Islanders road to the Conference Finals. Healy would be claimed by Anaheim in the expansion draft on June 24, 1993. At the 14th pick Quebec proceeded to select Adam Deadmarsh, who has gone on to a solid career. Surprisingly enough Maloney did have an eye on current Islander Mats Lindgren before he was taken by Winnipeg at #15. They were hoping to land Todd Bertuzzi at the 23rd pick. Of course Bertuzzi felt he could contribute right away for the Islanders but they did the right thing and sent him back for another two years of junior where he thrived. This was considered a very strong draft coming in and the Islanders managed to draft about 5 future NHL regulars. Once Mike Milbury became the GM he showed his lack of patience for young players by sending BOTH Bertuzzi and Bryan McCabe to Vancouver for a declining Trevor Linden in 1998. To support Milbury's decision Bertuzzi was a frustrating player, never realizing his potential until after he left New York. An olympic gold medal winning goaltender, a longshot surprise 5/6 defenseman and two Roller Hockey International stars would round out the second half of the 1993 draft for the Islanders.
